Mitochondrial function in skeletal muscle of critically ill
Urban, Tomáš ; Duška, František (advisor) ; Bořilová Linhartová, Petra (referee) ; Lipový, Břetislav (referee)
Aerobic phosphorylation in the mitochondria is an essential source of ATP for the functioning of higher organisms. It can be assumed that in critically ill patients, alterations in mitochondrial function are not only a para-phenomenon but also a cause of metabolic dysfunction and skeletal muscle function. In addition, critically ill patients are given drugs that facilitate care but may have unwanted side effects. Among these is the widely used diisopropylphenol, i.e. propofol. However, there is increasing evidence that propofol can induce propofol infusion syndrome, leading to mitochondrial dysfunction and failure, which can lead to the death of the patient. The research question in our project was whether there are differences in mitochondrial function compared to a control group in critically ill patients at different stages of the disease, and whether there is a difference between the group rehabilitating with the FES-CE device, i.e. functional electrical stimulation assisted ergometry, and the group with standard rehabilitation. Furthermore, we aimed to determine whether and how different parts of the respiratory chain are inhibited during propofol administration. In a subgroup of patients enrolled in a prospective randomized controlled trial, The Effect of Functional Electrical...

Semi-adaptive Dictionary compression methods
Urban, Tomáš ; Lánský, Jan (advisor) ; Dvořák, Tomáš (referee)
Goal of this work was to design and test methods for creating and parsing input data from file or stream in a way they are optimalized for following compression algorithms. We used two runs through data, first run collected analytical data and second run was for parsing. First part of this document is focused on methods TD2 and TD3 [4] for trie compression and their extension for unicode alphabets. In second part there are presented methods for creating dictionary without considering partitiong on words or syllabels. All methods are considered over unicode alphabet and implemetned as part of modular program XBW.
The EU and Turkey in the context of the migration crisis 2015-2016
Urban, Tomáš ; Aslan, Emil (advisor) ; Najšlová, Lucia (referee)
The EU-Turkey relations have been accompanied by the complicated accession process with the aim of integrating Turkey into the EU for several decades. The development of this process has been influenced by internal factors at both sides, as well as by external circumstances. Since 2011, due to the Middle East crisis, Turkey has begun to struggle with a growing number of arriving migrants with a major influx between 2013 and 2015. The wave of incoming migrants hit also the EU in the summer of 2015. This paper examines the impact of one of the strongest migration waves since World War II on the EU-Turkey relations. First is analyzed the migration crisis including its consequences for the EU and Turkey. Second is analyzed, how they responded to the crisis individually so that the research could focus on the cooperation of both sides from autumn 2015 to spring 2016. The paper discovers that the impacts of the migration crisis on the EU and Turkey were so significant that neither side was able to handle the difficult situation on its own. Thus, because of the characteristics of the migration wave, a unique window of opportunity opened for revival of the mutual relations. This revival occurred in October 2015 and up until the EU-Turkey refugee deal of March 2016, the EU-Turkey cooperation could be...
Escape to the Soviet Union and imprisonment in the gulag in memories of surviving Ruthenians and Jews from Carpathian Ruthenia
Urban, Tomáš ; Houda, Přemysl (advisor) ; Krátká, Lenka (referee)
The thesis deals with interpretations of the memories of Ruthenians and Jews who fled to the Soviet Union after the occupation of Carpathian Ruthenia by the Hungarian army in 1939 to find freedom and justice, but instead encountered imprisonment and repression and they ended up in the gulag for several years. On a daily basis, they were exposed to hard physical labor, hunger, thirst, Arctic frost, disease, cruel treatment and a permanent struggle for life. While Czechoslovak citizenship guaranteed Ruthenian citizens a pardon of the remainder of their sentences, early release from Stalinist concentration camps and participation in a training center in Buzuluk, Jews did not get such an opportunity due to alleged Hungarian nationality and had to live in the gulag on and on, even for more time than was determined by the court during the trumped-up political trials. Therefore, the Ruthenians had a significant presence in the formed Czechoslovak military unit and participated in the final defeat of the Hitlerˈs army. For the most part, they did not return to Carpathian Ruthenia because they did not agree with its post-war accession to the USSR, which hurt them so much. Despite this, they did not lose their left-wing orientation, many even joined the Communist Party, believing that Czechoslovak socialism...
