Location and literature - a castle of Vrchotovy Janovice. Literary-antropological study with evaluation of prerious interpretations
Bažant, Andrej ; Vrhel, František (advisor) ; Tomandl, Miloš (referee)
The subject of this study is a small castle ofVrchotovy Janovice and its last owner, baroness Sidonie Nadherna. Originally a medieval fortress, during 18th and 19th century it was turned into a romantic chateau surrounded by an impressive landscape park. The last owner of the castle, baroness Sidonie Nadherna (1885 - 1950), a highly educated and independent woman, became a close friend of the two outstanding figures of Central European culture, poet Rainer Maria Rilke and essayist and critic Karl Kraus. Both were visiting the castle and for both it became an inspiration in their writing. During the WWII, the castle served as the headquarters of SS-troops and after a short period of attempts to recover it, Sidonie Nadherna left to exile in England in 1949. Throughout following years, castle and park were subject to gradual devastation, its owner being almost forgotten. Fortunately, in late 1950's, it became a property of National Museum. In the early 1960's letters to Sidonie from both Rilke and Kraus were published and became an important resource for studies of their lives. Especially by Karl Kraus, the publishing of the letters revealed many yet unknown aspects of his personality and writing. For him, the relation to Sidonie Nadherna and his stays in park of Janovice, were the very impulse to create his...
Czech techno subculture on change of the century
Zeman, Daniel ; Pargač, Jan (advisor) ; Tomandl, Miloš (referee)
Techno subculture has often been discussed in public and media in the last decade. Police intervention during CZECHTEK 2005 raised the question within the excited discussion: "What is the essence of techno"? The overflow of unprofessional explanations published in media, following the incident, created the demand on serious explanation of the phenomenon. This work tries to explain the phenomenon of subcultures genesis with the help of theory outlined by Van Gennep and further extended by Victor Turner, i.e. subcultures are understood as archetypal continuation of initiation rituals in modern industrial society. Techno party is a ritual way how to create the anti-structure area and establish a liminoid environment in which the adolescents realize their relativity through the changed status of mind and they develop the attitudes to each other as well as within the society. As any social phenomenon fulfils more functions at the same time, this interpretation must be considered as one of the possible explanations. Furthermore also the work of Michel Maffesoli and the idea of neotribalism are taken into consideration. This work also reflects the evolution of subcultures from the beginning to the present and at the same time it reflects the studies of the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies in Birmingham and...

Argonauti: 30 years of a youth hiking club
Pohunek, Jan ; Pargač, Jan (advisor) ; Tomandl, Miloš (referee)
This paper describes history and character of a youth hiking club from Prague called Argonauti ("Argonauts") as a representant of minor youth organizations evolved from boy scouting. Origins of the club, which can be traced to 1960- 70s, it's structure as a social group, requirements, symbolics, role of tradition, perceived elitism and paedagogic methodology are also discussed. The club itself, as a group of individuals, but with a different name, was founded shortly before 1968, and became a 11th boy-scout club of Psohlavci centre when previously banned scouting was renewed during events of the Prague Spring. As the communist regime restored it's ban on scouting, the club was re-registered under Red Cross Youth, dissolved and revived again in 1977 as a local youth hiking and watermanship centre Gemini. Argonauti were created as a foremost club in this centre and did split from Gemini at 1993, forming an independent youth centre called Argo. Neither organization re-adopted boy scouting after 1989, unlike other former scouting clubs, which were masking their scouting activities in a similar manner. These former scouting clubs and similar organizations belonging to other youth movements (like Woodcraft), including the club discussed, can be in varying degrees considered to be a part of the "grey zone", which...
