The transformation of the structure and distribution of retail and services in post-socialist city - case study of Chodov

This thesis deals with transformation of the structure and distribution of retail and services in the post-socialist city. The aim of thesis is to detect changes in the structure and distribution in retail and services on the case study of Chodov. With the economic transformation after 1989 was changed the structure and distribution markets and services in the city. The topic has been previously studied on the example of large cities. It has been shown, that even in a small town like Chodov, the structure of retail and services was changed, number of establishments increased and new were founded. The distribution of retail and services was also changed in Chodov, retail and services began to be decentralized and they expanded into all parts of the town, in the town center number of retails and services further increased. The reason for these changes could have been change in the ownership mode of the businesses, a price liberalization, the growth of private businesses, an arrival of foreign investors and the change of consumers' behaviour. Alternative food networks in a post-communist context:: Farmers' markets and farm shops in Czechia Marie Syrovátková ABSTRACT The emergence of farmers' markets (FMs) and farm shops (FSs) in Czechia is a follow-up of the expansion of alternative food networks (AFNs) from Western Europe and North America where they have been developing for several decades. AFNs are an up-to-date topic as they respond to the growing concerns about the negative effects of the globalized conventional food system on social, economic and environmental aspects of food production, distribution and consumption. Each form of AFNs emphasizes a different aspect of the food system sustainability. FMs and FSs should primarily enable direct selling of quality local products made by small producers to support local economy, rural development, environmental protection and to improve quality of life. Based on a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, the aim of the dissertation is to explore the emergence and development of AFNs in Central Europe. Using the example of Czechia, considering the communist past of the region, the work evaluates the contribution of AFNs to build a more sustainable system of food production and consumption and the weak points of the phenomenon in Czechia and, using a comparison of the AFN evolution...

The current relevance of village shops and the identification of rural food deserts the example of Semily district

As the rural retail net in Czechia has declined in the last 20 years, the aim of this thesis was to develop the current socioeconomic importance of village shops in countryside in order to assess the possibility of the existence of rural food deserts in Czechia. The example of the Semily district was used. The combination of quantitative and qualitative analyzes allowed to learn that the absence of a village shop is often associated with other unpropitious socioeconomic characteristics. In comparison with municipal leaders of villages without village shops, municipal leaders of villages with village shops believe in the crucial importance of village shops. However, no differences in social conditions and quality of life between villages with and without village shops were found. In the researched region, seven of nine villages without any village shop have the characteristics of rural food deserts. Their particularity is the comprehension of their inhabitants with the current situation. Nevertheless, village shop is an important community centre in the countryside. Therefore its preservation should be one of the priorities of local governments.
