Aliyev, Hikmat ; Stakhovych, Lyudmyla (advisor) ; Benáček, Vladimír (referee)
The research scope of the given thesis is the impact of the Social Security and Tax systems on the income distribution among population in the Republic of Azerbaijan. The study is constructed on the comparative analysis of the changes in taxes, social benefits and income among different groups of the local population. The findings of the thesis propose that while reforms in social security system may stimulate positive impact on the reduction of the gap in income distribution, tax security system in Azerbaijan does not have distributive power. Consequently, in comparison with tax reduction, an increase in social benefits is proposed as a policy with higher efficiency for the Azerbaijan. Furthermore, the analysis established that initially large gap in income distribution between older and younger families may gradually be decreased as a result of policy implementations in the social security system in Azerbaijan. Another important idea developed in the given work is possibility of applying innovative investment-based social security system in Azerbaijan.

Stakhovych, Lyudmyla ; Bryndová, Lucie (advisor) ; Maďarová, Henrieta (referee)
Human capital is known to have an important contribution to economic growth; however most of the empirical studies determine human capital as number of years of schooling. In this thesis human capital is analyzed in terms of health. General demographic situation with its problems, including low life expectancy, premature mortality, negative population growth, and economic performance of Ukraine and Russia are discussed. Extra-high mortality in these countries resulted roughly in yearly losses of 5.9 billion US Dollars for Russia, and 1.5 billion US Dollars for Ukraine. Economic and political measures can prevent the countries from demographic catastrophe and economic losses.
Economic Relations between the Czech Republic and China
Vakrman, Tomáš ; Semerák, Vilém (advisor) ; Stakhovych, Lyudmyla (referee)
This paper examines the Czech-Chinese trade relationship, including both bilateral trade and competition on third markets, between years 1999 and 2009. The bilateral trade examined with an emphasis on intra-industry trade, which is measured by two different methods and is found to be rising throughout time by both measures. The intra-industry trade is disentangled into its vertical and horizontal part, where the former one has proved to have larger share in Czech-Chinese trade. It is observed that, the Czech Republic generally exports higher quality goods than it imports, to and from China. In this case, four methods of disentangling of intra-industry trade are used and the most suitable one for Czech-Chinese trade is identified. Moreover, the competition between Czech and Chinese exports on the EU- 15 market is examined. One new method, based on a simple modification of Grubel-Lloyd index, measuring the overlap between the two export flows, is employed. The overlap between Czech and Chinese exports seems to be rising and the structure of their exports has been converging throughout the time observed.

Price Determinants and Bidding Strategies in Internet Auctions
Máková, Barbora ; Gregor, Martin (advisor) ; Stakhovych, Lyudmyla (referee)
This paper presents an empirical analysis of price determinants and bidders' behaviour in on-line auctions eBay.de and Aukro.cz. We focus on the effect of sellers' feedback rating score and the phenomenon of sniping. Our dataset used for the analysis consists of 7054 auctions with 209449 bids from eBay, and 2223 auctions with 8779 bids from Aukro. Buyers in on-line auctions cannot personally inspect the quality of the product, so they have to rely on the seller's honesty. In this setting, the seller's rating may significantly contribute to the final price formation. Sniping is a bidding strategy, whereby a bidder waits until the last moment of the bidding period to place her bid. According to a theory, sniping should cause a reduction in the final price, and there should be a positive relationship between the probability of bidding and bidder's experience. The empirical results for both auction web sites show that the seller's feedback rating score has a significant impact on the final price. The tests regarding sniping provide distinctive results only for eBay. The effect of sniping on the final price is not clear since we have obtained different results for different specifications, but we found out that experience of a bidder increases the probability of placing a sniping bid.
