Syntactic Aspects of the Existential Construction in Danish with regard to the English and Czech Translation
Weigertová, Barbora ; Dubec, Pavel (advisor) ; Stahr, Radka (referee)
The chosen topic of this thesis is Danish existential sentences introduced by the pronoun "der," specifically with regard to their syntactic characteristics. The thesis firstly describes its approach and methodology used for the creation of its practical part. Secondly, the thesis delves into the general rules for the existential sentences, discusses the overlap between "der" and "det" existential constructions, briefly compares other existing works on the main topic, and thereafter arrives to its practical part. The practical part is an analysis of 120 sentences in total, more precisely, 60 sentences chosen from contemporary literature and 60 sentences based on corpus findings extracted from the European Parliament's official documents. The analysis pays special attention to the position of the pronoun "der", the notional subject and its realisations, verbs used in this type of constructions, and the position of the adverbials in these constructions. With this endeavour, the thesis hopes to contribute to the academic discourse, help further deepen the specification of the Danish existential sentences, and help potential other future comparative works, be it between Scandinavian languages or stylistically different types of texts. Lastly, this thesis hopes to be a useful pedagogical tool when...
Traces of the Italian Renaissance in Pär Lagerkvist's Dvärgen
Mrva, Jan ; Stahr, Radka (advisor) ; Humpál, Martin (referee)
The present bachelor thesis deals with the novel The Dwarf by the Swedish writer Pär Lagerkvist. The novel, published in 1944, is one of the important works of the so-called mobilization literature, which reflects the political and social situation in Europe during World War II. However, Lagerkvist incorporated many references to Renaissance Italy in The Dwarf, which are the focus of this thesis. The first section outlines the author's work and, in particular, the motif of the conflict between good and evil that is central to Lagerkvist throughout his work. Subsequently, the thesis presents a definition of the Renaissance based on the insights of Jacob Burckhardt and Václav Černý, which are used to analyse Renaissance references in literary space and time, as well as in the case of selected characters. The aim of the thesis is to show that the novel The Dwarf can be read from several perspectives: on the one hand, it represents a contribution to mobilization literature; on the other hand, the work can be seen as a historical novel full of factual data referring specifically to Renaissance Italy. Keywords Pär Lagerkvist, Dwarf, Renaissance, beredskapslitteratur, Swedish Literature
Construction of identity in Scandinavian migration literature
Exnerová, Kristýna ; Stahr, Radka (advisor) ; Březinová, Helena (referee)
(in English): This diploma thesis analyses how the identity of characters with a migration background is constructed in Scandinavian migration literature, focusing on language, culture, and national sentiment. With the help of social psychology, the first theoretical chapter introduces the concept of identity, whereas migration literature is presented in the second theoretical chapter. The centre of the practical analysis is the main characters in three Scandinavian novels, namely Enmandstelt by Alen Mešković, Tante Ulrikkes vei by Zeshan Shakar, and Kalla det vad fan du vill by Marjaneh Bakhtiari. The analyses' attention is aimed at the way language, cultural identity, and national identity contribute to the construction of each character's identity.
Contrastive Analysis: Use of Attribute in Danish and Czech
Nedělčevová, Anna ; Stahr, Radka (advisor) ; Dubec, Pavel (referee)
Contrastive Analysis: Use of Attribute in Danish and Czech Bc. Anna Nedělčevová Abstract This diploma thesis deals with the comparison of the use of the attribute in Czech and Danish. The first part of the Thesis contains a brief overview of how the attribute is used in the grammatical systems of both languages. In the following part, the reader is acquainted with the analysis of excerpts from three books translated from Czech to Danish and three translated vice versa. The analysis examines the position and way of expression of the attribute in the translation and the frequency and complexity in the original texts. The used data were analyzed using contingency tables. The analysis confirmed most of the assumptions obtained from the theoretical part - more frequent use of compounds in Danish, occasional replacement of Czech genitive attributes by Danish attributes formed by prepositional phrases, and more common use of postpositive adjectives in Czech. However, the findings obtained from the analysis also revealed other tendencies in translation, e.g., the replacement of Danish adjective clauses with postpositive adjectives in Czech. Keywords attribute, Danish, Czech, translation, contrastive analysis, adjectives, compound
Animal similes in Czech and Swedish
Pšeničková, Andrea ; Štěříková, Hana (advisor) ; Stahr, Radka (referee)
The bachelor thesis deals with the analysis of Czech and Swedish phraseological similes featuring zooappellatives (animal names). Its first part covers the theory of phraseology and idiomatics from the perspective of the Czech and Swedish linguistic tradition. The main focus lies on phraseological similes, while their semantic and formal components are described in greater detail. The selection of the similes chosen for the analysis in the second part of the thesis was carried out using a corpus-driven research method via queries to the KonText and Korp corpus managers, which retrieve digitalised language data from the selected Czech National Corpus and Språkbanken corpora. The main part of the thesis is then devoted to the semantic analysis of the selected similes and the search for translation equivalents between the Czech and Swedish language. Depending on the extent of mutual equivalence of their meaning, the similes are classified into four categories (ranging from full equivalence, where the same animal appears in both languages in the same meaning, to the category of similes for which there is no translation in the other language's field of phraseology). The fifth category is reserved for ambiguous instances. The analysis of the linguistic material shows that the most frequent translation...

Parallel Comparison of Idioms in Czech, Danish and German Language
Strnková, Karolína ; Stahr, Radka (advisor) ; Dubec, Pavel (referee)
in English: This thesis aims to offer a side-by-side comparison of Danish idioms that include names of countries and nationalities together with their Czech and German equivalents with help of text corpora. The thesis is based on the theoretical part, which describes the approach to phraseology and idiomatic in the Czech, Danish, and German language. Thereby it illustrates the complexity of this topic and focuses on the problematic part of it which lies in the ambiguity of the phraseological language field together with the disorganized state of the phraseological terminology and the lack of its anchoring. The practical part on the other hand analyses the corpus of 30 Danish idioms, which are according to the level of the semantic, formal, and lexical similarity to their equivalents divided into relevant groups. In the conclusion, attention is paid to the proximity of analysed languages despite the fact they stem from different language groups. In addition to that, the percentage of all mentioned nationalities in the corpus is visualized.

A Writer's Role in Society in the View of the Authors Linked to the Norwegian Journal Profil
Křenek, Václav ; Humpál, Martin (advisor) ; Stahr, Radka (referee)
This Bachelor Thesis explores how individual authors grouped around a Norwegian journal Profil perceived the question of the "role of the writer in society". Pieces of work by the two most well-known authors - Dag Solstad and Jan Erik Vold were the main source for this Thesis. Primarly the works published between 1967-1969, when this question was discussed the most in the group around the journal. For a better explanation of the context also a few texts from the years 1966 and 1970 appear. As pieces of works and texts, the author of this Thesis presents newspaper articles, lectures, critical pieces, or contributions in professional discussions. The theoretical part of this Thesis is rooted in "the theory of social fields" created by a French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. This theory uses key points of a "new science about works" such as "cultural capital", "habitus", or "literary field" to describe this issue. Thanks to the system of fields, it is easier to explain and define presumed mediations between the writers and the society. The practical part of this Thesis consists of introductions of individual writers in the context of Norwegian literature. Those are followed by the discussed materials interpreted chronologically through the lens of Bourdieu's sociology. In the conclusion of this part,...
