The phenomenon of the new
Hodec, Markus E. ; Sepp, Hans Rainer (advisor) ; Stenger, Georg (referee) ; Schmiedl-Neuburg, Hilmar (referee)
The present work on the phenomenon of the new sees itself as an introductory structure of kainology. In doing so, it is pursuing two goals. On the one hand, it seeks the establishment of a new philosophical concept and an independent philosophical method, kainology. On the other hand, the main scope of this investigation applies to the problematization of the phenomenon of the new. In order to take a systematic look at the new, the work is divided into three sections, each of which produces its own partial result. The first section deals with the history of the new. Exemplifying the ontological opposition of Heraclitus and Parmenides, the new emerges as a phenomenon that can be treated more precisely in terms of becoming rather than in terms of being. The second section is dedicated to the method. The kainological method is based on the one hand on dialectics as formulated by Hegel and further developed by Adorno. On the other hand, kainology borrows from the method of phenomenology, namely Husserl's. The complementarity of the two pioneering achievements results in four main methodological elements for kainology: first person singular, from fact to Wesen, the included middle and subject-object. After the history of the new has been traced and the method of kainology established, it is time to examine the...
Philosophical-phenomenological Embedding of Viktor E. Frankl's logotherapy and existential analysis
Gräff, Thérèse Laetitia Marie Josephe ; Sepp, Hans Rainer (advisor) ; Schmiedl-Neuburg, Hilmar (referee)
The present work deals with the philosophical roots and a philosophical embedding of logotherapy and existential analysis, a meaning-centered therapy, which was founded in the 20th century by Viktor Frankl. In the first chapter, the terms logotherapy, existential analysis and phenomenological analysis that are central to the form of therapy will be defined and the areas of application and tasks of this therapy presented. The second chapter presents the topic of existence. For this purpose, the understanding of existence in existential analysis will first be dealt with and central concepts such as transcendence, freedom, responsibility and the questions of life in relation to them explained. In a second part of the chapter, the philosophical justification will be based on the philosophy of Martin Heidegger; here the same terms will now be related to his understanding of ek-sistence and Dasein. The third chapter is devoted to the logotherapeutic dimensionalontology. In a first section, this ontology will be brought closer to its therapeutic context and in a second part, the philosophical reference will be made on the basis of Max Scheler's philosophy: here, in particular, terms such as person, Geist, the dimensional differences in humans and the ability to Gegenstandsfähigkeit will be focussed upon....
The dialogical existence of human being. A socio-phenomenological approach to the language for the question of the human In-Between
Schmitz, Vanessa ; Sepp, Hans Rainer (advisor) ; Kurbacher, Frauke (referee)
According to the topic, it is only possible to offer a conclusion of the main concern. Considering to the irrevocable world-relationality of the human, the main concern consists in describing the siginificance and necessity of speaking with each other concerning the concrete constitution of reality, with an eye on the limits that go along with it. Finally, the development of a Poetical Attitude is given as a suggestion to solve with the question of human intersubjective existence based on the motives of justice and love, and which is closely interwoven with the dialogical dimension and the intersubjective narrative entanglement of people with one another. Keywords: Togetherness, Speaking one to Another, Poetical Attitude, Openness, Justice, Friendship, Dialouge, Life, Love, Human Existence, World, In-Between.
The Novel as Moment of In-Between. Oikological Considerations on the Where of Belletristic Prose
Vanbrabant, Jonas Kristiaan ; Sepp, Hans Rainer (advisor) ; Nielsen, Cathrin (referee)
The Novel as Moment of In-Between. Oikological Considerations on the Where of Belletristic Prose Jonas Vanbrabant Abstract This master's thesis addresses the phenomenon of belletristic prose from an oikological point of view, on the question of the place of reading and writing. Considering the novel, and in the same breath the novella and the short story, as multiple moments of 'in-between' opens up perspectives beyond the phenomenologically superseded dichotomy of receptionist aesthetics on the one hand and productionist poetics on the other. Drawing on a wide variety of thinkers from the broader field of Husserl's legacy, notably Adorno, Bakhtin, Blumenberg, Derrida, Eco, Henry, IJsseling, Kundera, Levinas, Palmen, Richir, Ricœur, Schapp, Schütz, Sepp and Stein, the in-betweenness of the novel is explored in three chapters. Firstly along the selves of the reader and writer and the characters, showing, with focus on the role of empathy and affective phantasy, that these figures cannot but be configured inside the in-between of the literary work. In the second chapter regarding the problem of fiction, in which, minding the realistic and the imaginative preserved in fiction, the novel is being depicted as woven or weavable fabric, which precisely because of its in-betweenness leads to meaning and sympathy....
Intercultural Phenomenology of Photographing
Gurjanov, Filip ; Sepp, Hans Rainer (advisor) ; Coriando, Paola Ludovica (referee) ; Tani, Toru (referee)
English In this dissertation I thematise the act of photographing with a special emphasis on the seeing, which constitutes this act. In order to cast a light on this subject, I refer to the early philosophy of Martin Heidegger as well as to the Japanese philosopher Kitarō Nishida. Having Heidegger's 'Pragmatism' and 'Apriorism' as my point of departure, I first develop a hypothesis of a tension be- tween the passivity and the activity of photographic vision. On the one hand, photographers depend on already existing entities and contexts, in which entities appear to us 'first and foremost'; on the other hand, photographers possess an 'a priori knowledge' regarding framing, which helps them to activate photographic vision in the right moment and under the right circumstances. Alongside the idea of a modification of sight from a practical interest (,Umsicht!) to the theoretical one (,Hinse- hen'), I also discuss photographic seeing with reference to Heidegger's idea of the phenomenologi- cal reduction. Before photographers use their cameras to prepare for the actual shot, they modify their understanding of the being of the encountered entities, i. e. they perform a phenomenological- photographic reduction. The first part of the dissertation ends with the inclusion of the theme of au- thenticity,...
The Integral - A philosophically questioning appreciation about Ken Wilber
Glogner, Tim Jakob ; Sepp, Hans Rainer (advisor) ; Negele, Manfred (referee) ; Lucas, Marc (referee)
Kenneth "Ken" Earl Wilber (born January 31, 1949 in Oklahoma City) is an American writer in the field of integral theory. He is considered a post-postmodern contemporary philosopher. He lives and works in Denver. Wilber writes in particular on philosophy, psychology, mysticism and spiritual evolution. His approach encompasses the humanities and natural sciences as well as psychology and the universal knowledge of the teachings of wisdom. In recent years he has developed an integral model with the help of which "eternally valid knowledge," also known as "Philosophia Perennis," can be applied to all areas of life. For example, in the field of psychology, the result is integral mod- els of therapy. On the one hand, Wilber would like to combine science with the spiritual theories and traditions of religions, including intercultural religious experience. On the other hand, his approach aims at a reconciling and constructive exchange between all (specialized) disciplines (e.g. philosophy, psy- chology, various forms of therapy, pedagogy, biology, physics, ecology, medicine, economics, poli- tics and many others). "Integral" has current meaning not only against the background of smaller and larger human crises. It also implies holistic consideration and exploration of all life phenomena and corresponds to...
The Material Apriori and the Material Ethics of Values in Max Scheler
Zhang, Wei ; Sepp, Hans Rainer (advisor) ; Montagová, Kristina Simona (referee)
Prolegomena zur phänomenologischen materialen Wertethik bei Max Scheler: Vom Materialen Apriori bis zum emotionalen Apriori in Bezug auf I. Kant und E. Husserl ZHANG Wei Abstract This essay is an investigation on Scheler's phenomenological material ethics of value against the background of his thoughts of ethics. It discusses the static founding-relation of Scheler's material apriorism and his phenomenological meta-ethics in the context of Kant and Husserl. The introduction includes three basic questions of ethics. The first one is the fundamental question of ethics, that is, "how should men live?" The second one is the leading question of ethics, that is, "what is good?" The third one is the grounding question of ethics, that is, "whether is the ethics founded on reason or feeling/emotions at all?" These three questions form a wide background of ideas for the investigation of Scheler's phenomenological material ethics of value. The primary problem of Scheler's ethics is how an absolute or a priori, emotional ethics is possible. Therefore, the entry point of this essay is to phenomenologically re-examine the "a priori." Chapter 1 begins with the analysis of Kant's and Husserl's understandings of the "a priori." And the next step is to discuss Scheler's critique of Kant's understanding of the formal a...
Will to Power and Eternal Return: A critical Reading of Heidegger's Interpretation of Nietzsche
Guzun, Madalina ; Sepp, Hans Rainer (advisor) ; Nielsen, Cathrin (referee)
Spiral in art
Lucas, Nathalie ; Sepp, Hans Rainer (advisor) ; Goddard, Jean-Christophe (referee)
Title : The spiral in art. Aesthetic, ethical and political aspects. Abstract : In this work, we built up a collection of the different works of art in which the spiral form appears, in order to seize the symbolic meaning associated to this form particularly recurrent in Occidental art. We analysed its metamorphoses in different arts -architecture, painting, music, film, etc. - and its different roles, from its apparently ornamental role in the Ionic order, to its more immediately conceptually-loaded role in Renaissance painting or Baroque architecture: the comparison of these occurrences of the spiral in art led us to put into light a shift in the way men looked at nature, the Greek artists electing the spiral because of its sober regularity, the Renaissance painters or the Baroque architects putting emphasis on a power, characteristic of the logarithmic spiral, to evoke « nature's » prodigality in the display of forms - the spiral being only one among them - and the mysterious, to some men and artists even miraculous, character of the appearance of life and the growth of living beings. We therefore focused on the study of the motives that appeal on this symbolic in art. We were particularly interested in the motif of the shell, its many variations leading us from the cornucopia and the representations of...
Computational Worlds: An Information Ontology
Mullins, Ryan David ; Gabriel, Markus (advisor) ; Sepp, Hans Rainer (referee)
Ryan D. Mullins Computational Worlds: An Information Ontology Abstract of the Master-Thesis In this thesis, 'the world', that unified, all-encompassing domain about which we speak and make apparent discoveries every day will be declared another mythology. Instead, reality will look radically different. Reality comprises distortive, aesthetic simulations. The reality that will emerge will be a computational reality, a metaphysical pluralism in which actuality and possibility vie and vex, ultimately 'collapsing' into unified information states. This is a philosophy of the transfinite; more negatively, an anti-Kantian, anti-monistic philosophy. The author seeks nothing less than a new prism through which to view traditional philosophical problems and, in the best-case scenario, create possible solutions.
