The interaction of information science and cognitive sciences with emphasis on information retrieval

Věra Pilecká The interaction of information science and cognitive sciences with emphasis on information retrieval (dissertation thesis) (Vzájemné ovlivňování informační vědy a kognitivních věd s důrazem na vyhledávání informací) Abstract Focus of this thesis is on the description of the interaction of information science and cognitive sciences with emphasis on information retrieval which is influenced by some of the cognitive aspects. The introductory chapter deals with the definition of information science and paradigms inspired by a cognitive approach (cognitive and socio-cognitive paradigm). Then a cognitive science is defined including its basis, methods and application. In the third chapter, a comparison between information and cognitive science is included, and their interaction and common interests are described. Fourth chapter focuses on information retrieval and influencing factors, including search methods, user information behaviour, and user cognitive characteristics and mental models. The final chapter presents two surveys focused on the use of intuitive and analytical information retrieval styles during searching on Google, and the perception of the differences between traditional and online teaching of the effective reading techniques. Projects Wikisource and Wikibooks as information resources

(in English): This thesis occupies itself with the establishment and development of english versions of the Wikisource and Wikibooks projects, with extension to the czech- language version. It processes the information about the new text making procedure and project text modifications. It deals with content organisation and projects extent. The text pays attention only to the tools provided by the projects, because the provided services are results of processed tools actions. The final part is focused on existing ways of using and possible suggestions of using the projects as information sources.
Open Access institutional repositories in the Czech Republic

The bachelor's thesis concentrates on analysis and description of current state of open access institutional repositories in the Czech Republic. The theoretical part of the thesis describes changes of scholarly communication, which led to development of open access movement, basics and methods of open access and open access movement in the Czech Republic. Besides it deals with open access policies of Czech institutions and involvement of Czech open repositories in international projects. The practical part contains the analysis of selected institutional repositories. The analysis concentrates on institutional policies of self-archiving, content of repository and its availability. It also deals with involvement of repositories in international projects, visibility of repositories and with software that the repositories use. In conclusion, these selected repositories are compared.
Factual databases in chemistry

and keywords Bachelor thesis depicts factual databses in the field of chemistry. It focuses mainly on databases that cover all fields of chemistry. The thesis presents a general definition of databases and desribes their history and typology. Examples of various factual chemical information which can be searched through chemical databases, are described and shown. The factual chemical databases CAS REGISTRY, CAS REACT, PubChem, ChemSpider and Reaxys are described in detail and compared. Additionally, examples of chemical information searches in these databases are shown. Examples of specialized chemical databses that focus on specific kind of chemical information are listed. In conclusion, the importance of factual databases in providing relevant and correct chemical information for their users is evaluated. Publishers' policies regarding the possibility of auto-archiving in open repositories

The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to describe and characterize policies that publishers claim to writers and their published scholarly texts due to the possibility of self-archiving of these texts in open repositories. The theoretical part describes open access, discusses in detail self-archiving scholarly texts, including approach particular types of publishing policies. The practical part concentrates on analysing the policy of journal publishers with the highest impact factor and the Czech publishers recorded in database SHERPA/RoMEO. Conclusion contains a summary of the two parts of the analysis and comparison of the use of self- archiving across disciplines.

The diploma thesis titled "The impact of quality of information on fulfilling the infor- mation needs of users of the "Aspekty náhradní výchovy (ANV.cz)" domain-specific portal" analyzes the information needs of web portal users and evaluates the quality of the in- formation contained therein using a variety of different methods. The thesis summarizes concepts of information of quality and information needs, describes the issues of measuring quality of information and elaborates on the motivation and possibilities of research on in- formation needs and increasing quality of information. The first part of the thesis defines the terms of information behavior, information need and quality of information. This chapter describes the aforementioned concepts, the possibilities of their research, measurement and evaluation and suggests the general relationship between quality of information and fulfil- ling information needs. This part also lists other possible methods of identifying information needs which were not used in the thesis. Database vendors, producers and information services suppliers are aware of trends in technology and marketing since they have been established entities of information market for decades. Thus it was inevitable that these major players would exploit the latent potential of social media and networks. They have achieved this by creating social network communities, which vary wildly in size from dozens to tens of thousands of users. Being an integral part of communication activities these groups have become important platform for direct contact with users.
