The End of the Estate how you know it? Citizens' Involvement in Urban Planning in the Context of the Dispute over New Construction on the Ďáblice Housing Estate
Křesalová, Tereza ; Novák, Arnošt (advisor) ; Lehečka, Michal (referee)
The master's thesis focuses on citizen participation in urban planning in the Ďáblice housing estate in Prague. Within the context of the dispute over the development of the housing estate, the central focus is on the claims-making process and the argumentation used by local residents organized in the association Krásné Kobylisy. The main theoretical framework used is the concept of "the right to the city," and its practical application is examined in this work, and the theory "production of space". The issue is approached from the perspective of social constructivism, which enables the capture of the social reality of actors and their involvement in shaping the space of the housing estate. The empirical part is based on qualitative research, including interviews, document analysis, and participant observation. The aim was to reflect the claims and resistance of local residents against the development project. Key words: urban developement, social constructivism, right to the city, production of space, urban movements

Plastic in Nature: Understanding Plastic in its Sociohistorical Context
Morell, Ian ; Černý, Karel (advisor) ; Novák, Arnošt (referee)
for-Understanding Plastic: Plastic and its Socio-historical Context Ian Francisco Morell This article explores the proliferation of plastic in the modern era, especially as it relates to nature. Using the text The Ecological Rift along with Capitalism in the Web of Life, this article first attempts to understand the nature-society dialectic and how capital relations have produced changes in natural systems and vice versa. Then, using the texts Land of Desire along with American Plastic: A Cultural History, this article contextualizes the productive and cultural relations which underpin plastic production and its eventual fate as pollution. Finally, this article concludes with an attempt to synthesize these texts to understand plastic pollution as a world-transforming phenomenon with long-term, uncertain effects.
Grey wolf in the magazine Myslivost
Grosser, Dominik ; Novák, Arnošt (advisor) ; Pospíšilová, Tereza (referee)
The thesis deals with the tension between the hunting perspective and strict protection of the grey wolf in the context of the Czech Republic. Within the theoretical part, I construct an understanding of hunting from historical and contemporary practical perspectives, discuss its "traditional" conception, present the naturalistic arguments for the return of the wolf, its current distribution, legal protection and the obstacles that may hinder its return. At the same time, I further problematize the conflict between the return among local people and the discourse of strict wolf protection, in which elements of power asymmetry, based on foreign literature, stand out due to the imposition of dominant and hegemonic protection within the public space. With these assumptions in mind, I enter the subsequent critical discursive analysis of the journal Myslivost, published by the Czech- Moravian Hunting Union. For my work, I set out to unravel the modes of representation through which the Myslivost magazine constructs the social reality of the grey wolf, while also analysing the ideologue(s) that underpin and enable the legitimisation of the discourse in question. On the basis of my analysis, I find that the wolf is represented within Myslivost magazine primarily as a "mongrel" and "artificially released"...
Typology of alternative housing residents
Domkářová, Anna ; Novák, Arnošt (advisor) ; Špaček, Ondřej (referee)
This thesis is focused on alternative forms of living (caravans, boats, houseboats, yurts, tiny houses, and others specified by high mobility and small space) in the context of the recent crisis. These forms of living can be an answer to social, political, and economical situations. This theme is not only about the recent housing crisis, but also about the housing process and the concept of "home". This thesis, based on half-structured interviews which were completed with additional secondary sources, tries to find an understanding of the given choices and look for similarities and differences in the deeper relations of inhabitants to their own form of housing, which are tied to specific motivations, choices, home enjoyment, but also to problems which the specific form has. The diverse relations to housing are the core of this thesis - to create a typology of citizens who use alternative forms of living. Types like old-school, adventurer, pragmatic, planter and bohemian were created due to the interpretation of found data and are representatives of different approaches to the concept of home, but also to oneself and to the world. Keywords housing crisis, alternative housing, affordable housing, typology
