Teaching Future Tenses to University Students of English Philology
Šteflová, Hanna ; Malá, Marcela (advisor) ; Klégr, Aleš (referee) ; Betáková, Lucie (referee)
1 Abstract This thesis deals with teaching the following seven future forms: the Future Simple, Be going to, the Present Simple and the Present Continuous with a future reference, the Future Continuous, the Future Perfect Simple and the Future Perfect Continuous to students of English Philology. The deductive and inductive approaches to teaching grammar were employed to teach these future forms. The quantitative part of the study had two main objectives. The first objective was to revise and improve the students' knowledge of the seven future forms taught by the study. The results revealed that out of all the seven future forms, the students' knowledge of the Future Continuous, the Future Perfect Simple and the Future Perfect Continuous was the least satisfactory, and these tenses required further explanation and practice. The participants' knowledge of the rules of use for all seven future forms was rather low in general and required significant improvement. The second objective was to investigate which approach to teaching grammar, the deductive or inductive approach, was more effective for teaching future tenses. The deductive approach proved to be more effective for teaching all seven future forms. The difference between the results of the pre-test and the post-test for the Future Continuous, the Future...

Malá, Marcela ; Tomeš, Igor (advisor) ; Dragomirecká, Eva (referee)
The most characteristic feature of the demographic development in the Czech Republic and other developed countries is population ageing. The aim of the thesis "The process and rate of disability among seniors" was to determine the extent to which disability interferes with the lives of the seniors and to map the development, progress and conditions of the pension system. After an introductory overview of basic concepts, a part of the thesis deals with a theoretical analysis of the European framework of social security of seniors and another part is concerned with the reform of disability pensions in the Czech Republic. The focus is also on the forms of care for disabled pensioners. The empirical part analyzes the areas related to the development of population structure, administrative agenda, overview of pensions according to the WHO diagnosis groups, total overview of disability pensions, the development of the structure of pensions, financing of pension administration, and the average age of retired people. The economic side is also included, where pensions are compared with average salary and also the economic activity of seniors. The research is quantitative and confirms the current global phenomenon of population ageing as one of the most important problems of developed countries. With this, old-age...

The development of sentence complexity in academic written English (1904-2005): a syntactic study
Malá, Marcela ; Dušková, Libuše (advisor) ; Ježková, Šárka (referee) ; Klégr, Aleš (referee)
This study focuses on concrete evidence of changes in the syntactic structure of sentences and sentence complexity over a period of about a century. It analyses academic texts from the fields of psychology and economics. The analysis is based on explicitly expressed primary (finite) and secondary (non-finite) predications which are categorised as main clauses and finite and non-finite subordinate clauses. According to the syntactic functions of subordinate clauses in sentences four syntactic categories are considered: 1) clauses substituting for a noun phrase slot, 2) clauses substituting for an adverbial element slot, 3) clauses contributing to the complexity of noun phrases in the form of premodification or postmodification and 4) comment clauses. The findings indicate that current academic prose is less complex and more impersonal than a hundred years ago and shows a tendency towards a non-finite mode of expression. Finite clauses substituting for clause elements normally expressed by noun phrases are the only syntactic function of finite clauses in which the percentage of clauses in the modern texts increased. Non-finite clauses are used not only instead of hypotactically but also paratactically linked clauses and contribute to the structural compactness of an English sentence. The study lists the most...
