The relationship between ad's message and effectiveness
Rybáček, Kryštof ; Malvotová, Pavla (advisor) ; Lupač, Petr (referee)
7 Abstract Researchers observe the growth of advertising communication as a feature of the information society. However, they are not in agreement about the relationship of ad's effectiveness and its message. In this thesis, I examine the mentioned relationship and show how sociology can contribute to this debate in marketing. First, I summarize the key arguments in marketing literature. Second, I identify key insights in agenda-setting theory and symbolic interactionism which are relevant to message in advertising. Based on the first two parts, I define four hypotheses: ad's effectiveness is related to recognition of the message by audience, message type, its relevance, and uniqueness. In the third part, I analyze a sample of 90 television ads aired from 2021 to 2023. Based on the results, the first two hypotheses can be confirmed. In the last section, I discuss the conclusions and their limitations with respect to marketing and sociological approaches. Keywords ad effectiveness, ad messages, video segments analysis, brand lift, brand salience
Carnism in the Czech and Slovak context
Kcholová, Tereza ; Vandrovcová, Tereza (advisor) ; Lupač, Petr (referee)
This thesis is dedicated to study carnism. The author is trying to establish via compilation analysis its basis and origin, and common knowledge there is to have on carnism as an ideology. Later in this thesis will be analyzed the form of carnism in United States of America where this term was first defined and where several research papers were made concerning it's defining features. In the following part of this thesis, research is based around the analysis of carnism in Czech and Slovak environment and culture - thus defining the carnist ideology in the area which wasn't its place of origin, and both went through similar historical evolution in recent history. Those two latter countries have scarce awareness of carnism as an ideology, therefore information from research papers concerning meat consumption and meatless diets were applied as a source - meat eating is one of the most visible manifestations of the carnist ideology. In the last part of this thesis the author compares respective findings from those two speres of carnist ideology and thus tries to define the form of carnism in Czechia and Slovakia and to find specific areas in which Czech and Slovak carnism is unique. Key words: carnism; meat eating; defense mechanisms; Czech republic; Slovak republic
Digital parenting: the relationship between parents' socioeconomic status and their children's internet activities
Václavíková, Markéta ; Lupač, Petr (advisor) ; Šafr, Jiří (referee)
This thesis analyses the influence of parents and children's characteristics on the usage of active and restrictive mediation strategies. Relations have been verified by using regression analysis of data from the EU Kids Online IV survey from 2018. Emphasis was put especially on factors related to digital inequalities, namely socioeconomic status and the level of digital skills of the parents. These factors impact how individuals use digital media and their general behaviour towards them. Therefore, it is important to observe these factors in relation to digital parenting because parents can influence not only access to digital media and the way they are used but also the risks and opportunities to which a child is exposed on the internet. Active mediation should educate children about the usage of digital media and, through that, maximise the opportunities that come with the internet. However, restrictive mediation uses prohibition and rules to protect children from risks but does not lead to the acquisition of new digital media-related skills. Analysis shows that higher socioeconomic status, digital skills, and the age of a child impact the usage of active mediation strategies. However, no relationship was proven between the restrictive mediation and neither socioeconomic status nor digital...
Transmission of masculinities' patterns in leisure time organizations
Profous, Tomáš ; Dudová, Radka (advisor) ; Lupač, Petr (referee)
(in English): In my bachelor thesis I deal with the attitude towards masculinities of young male scoutmasters in the leisure organization Junák - český skaut z.s.. The aim of my work is to use interviews with six male scoutmasters to conduct a qualitative probe that reveals some of the ways in which they think about masculinities and how these ways are subsequently translated into practice in the Scout troop. To do this, I used Jean-Claude Kauffman's method of insightful interviewing and the method of deductive thematic analysis. The analysis revealed that some scoutmasters take an essentialist approach to masculinities while others take a deregulated approach, which has implications for the gender socialisation of children in their troop. I further proposed a hypothesis that men in Scouting maintain their masculinities despite caregivig by framing it as a problem to be solved. The theme of coeducated troops and the possibility of coming-out in the Boy Scout troop also emerged inductively in the analysis. The resulting findings can serve as a springboard for further exploration of masculinities in leisure organizations, while also contributing to the development of Junák - český skaut z.s. as an organization that welcomes all regardless of their gender or sexual orientation.
Effects of media consumption on attitudes towards migration
Novotný, Ondřej ; Linek, Lukáš (advisor) ; Lupač, Petr (referee)
(in English): The diploma thesis deals with the analysis of media effects on attitudes towards migration in the Czech Republic. For this, it uses data from the MEDIAN agency from 2021, which combines a questionnaire panel survey and personalized measurement of media consumption using mobile and computer applications. The work focuses on valence attitude to migration (on a scale of positive/negative) and perceived importance of migration, while testing hypotheses on different media effects according to different types of media and recipient characteristics. The analysis shows that exposure to commercial broadcasting (both directly on migration and news in general) has led to higher chances to have an anti-immigration valence attitude, while watching news on public television has partially led to a positive attitude. It has also been shown that overall TV news had a more negative effect on the valence attitude to migration compared to online media. At the same time, the analysis indicated a possible different effect of commercial media according to political interest. On the contrary, the effect of overall exposure to migration on attitude to migration or perceived importance has not been proven. Conclusions and methodological limitations, as well as recommendations for future research are discussed.
Crisis of trust in science
Janiš, Viktor ; Lupač, Petr (advisor) ; Skovajsa, Marek (referee)
This thesis is concerned with a role of science in society and this theme is analyzed through risk and trust in science. It is argued that risk and trust in science are strongly interconnected and that is why they are analyzed together within one thesis. The thesis is divided into two main parts. The first part introduces generally theoretical context of reflexive sociology as it uses its apparatus. In this part of thesis are mainly analyzed terms of "modernity" and "reflexivity", and they are approached through the theme of science and knowledge. The second part is concerned with an analysis of trust in science and risk and their evolution today. The analysis uses theory presented in the first part of the thesis. There are also used actual studies concerning trust and risk in this analysis and they are compared with the reflexive-sociology approach. That is how the evolution of risk and trust in science is outlined. The result is a description of general dimensions of risk and trust in science and their evolution according to reflexive sociology which may help to understanding of a role of science in a temporary society. Fathers'motivations for the presence at childbirth and their experiences in the sociological perspective
Krajíčková, Michaela ; Dudová, Radka (advisor) ; Lupač, Petr (referee)
This theses focuses on finding out the reasons for fathers to be present at childbirth and how they experience childbirth. These goals are viewed from a sociological point of view and therefore the topic is connected with sociological theories and also society's view of the father at birth. The theoretical part also mentions the development of society in terms of fathers at childbirth and related changes in society in connection with intensive fatherhood. The empirical part uses an interpretive phenomenological analysis in the form of a qualitative interview, which is important for a better understanding of respondents. It was found out what are the motives of fathers to go to birth, how they perceive the presence of fathers and how they experience the birth itself. The thesis discusses the influence of personality characteristics on the motives and experiences of fathers based on the information obtained. This research is exploratory and is perceived as a preliminary research for, in the future, quantitative research, which will develop the obtained information and results and thus it will be possible to find out possible connections between the motives for presence at birth and personality characteristics. Based on the information obtained from the interviews, we could say that the most common...
Stratification of Internet users in the Czech Republic
Nádvorník, Daniel ; Lupač, Petr (advisor) ; Podaná, Zuzana (referee)
The aim of the bachelor's thesis is to design a class scheme of Czech Internet users and at the same time to present a sufficient argumentative basis for such a theoretical construct. Following the research tradition of the digital divide and the Bourdieuan concept of capital, this work tries to connect these aspects both on a theoretical and empirical level and at the same time critically evaluate usefulness of used research tool, research design and conclusions they provide from data analysis and own questionnaire survey. In the analytical part, the author presents the method of conceptualization and transformation of data, the link to other research in the field of the digital divide and presents an exploratory analytical view of the structure of Czech Internet users. The analysis presents the distinguishing characteristics of the given clusters, which arose from the performed cluster analysis. In conclusion, the author states that the concept of digital capital is a suitable research tool for capturing digital inequalities among Czech Internet users. Keywords: Digital divide, internet, digital access, digital skills, internet usage outcomes, attitudes towards the Internet, internet activities, cluster analysis
The relationship between sustainability and wellbeing its connection with mitigation and adaptation policies
Čižinská, Kateřina ; Richter, Eva (advisor) ; Lupač, Petr (referee)
The topic of this bachelor thesis is the relationship between sustainability and wellbeing and its connection with mitigation and adaptation policies. For the relationship between sustainability and wellbeing, the history and definitions of the terms themselves are described and then the overall multidimensionality of the concept and the individual dimensions are shown through the relational theory of wellbeing. Subsequently, the interconnection of these concepts is discussed along with the disregard for a full understanding of wellbeing in an economic growth orientation. For the mitigation and adaptation section, 11 studies were selected. At the end, the conclusions are presented: Wellbeing is often understood in a limited way, while it is clear from the theories described that wellbeing is also conditioned by the environment, and environmental sustainability is a necessary condition for wellbeing. Similarly, mitigation and adaptation policies have been shown to have some link to wellbeing, but often wellbeing has not been understood as important and has been put in the background of research. However, the relationship between sustainability and wellbeing is also important for further research on climate change mitigation and adaptaton policies.
Menstruation in the area of paid work
Poncarová, Petra ; Dudová, Radka (advisor) ; Lupač, Petr (referee)
(in English) This thesis deals with how women experience and interpret menstruation in the world of paid work. First, the theoretical basis concerning menstruating bodies in society and the position of women in the workplace in connection with menstruation is presented. Through exploratory research and grounded theory method, the work seeks to capture, primarily on the basis of answers obtained from qualitative interviews, how Czech women cope with menstruation in the workplace. The main research question is "How do women experience and interpret menstruation in the world of paid work?" Secondary research questions are "Do women experience discrimination during work because of menstruation?" and "Do women think that menstruation limits their work performance?" The responses from the communication partners show that women face a number of obstacles in doing their paid work, which can discriminate them. Furthermore, it has been found that menstruation more or less restricts women in their work performance. And the thesis focuses, among other things, on how women talk about menstruation in their work environments.
