School as an integration partner. Project final research report

The final research report presents the results of the project School as an Integration Partner, which aimed to analyze in detail the situation of pupils with insufficient knowledge of Czech as the language of instruction at primary schools in Prague in the years 2019-2021. The introductory chapter presents the project aims, as well as the employed methodology and the definitions of key terms. The second chapter focuses on the state of knowledge, particularly with regard to existing data sources and the data itself, as well as previous research targeting pupils with migration background. The key part of the research report is the third chapter presenting the results of three waves of questionnaire surveys conducted at primary schools in Prague. The research at primary schools focused on the number of pupils with insufficient knowledge of Czech as the language of instruction according to their level of Czech language proficiency, the forms of support provided by schools, as well as the funding of this support, its sufficiency, the existence of teachers specialized in teaching Czech as a second language and coordinators. The individual waves of monitoring also explored specific issues such as distance learning or the new system of language training. The fourth chapter of the report presents the results of the qualitative research – the case study and the analysis of in-depth interviews with various actors from school directors to teachers, coordinators and finally parents of pupils with migration background. The final chapter summarizes the findings. The research report is accompanied by questionnaires from the three waves of the survey and automated reports presenting the results of the survey for the whole of Prague and for the individual administrative districts of Prague 1-22.

Integration of Immigrant Children from the Perspective of their Parents (Example of immigrants from post-Soviet countries)

The master thesis deals with the fenomenon of integration of 1,5. generation of immigrants from the coutries of former USSR. Czech researchers devote to this topic relatively little attention, so that it remains in seclusion. At present, there are only partial and incidental findings about integration of children with origins in the former USSR. Based on the current level of knowledge it seeks to grasp the phenomenon of the integration of those children in all its complexity, and therefore focuses on the different dimensions of integration - structural, social and cultural including language. In examining all the mentioned integration dimensions in tracks how the immigrant children handle the cultural heritage of their country of origin, but also how the adopt Czech culture in its broader sense. To get the deepest understanding of their integration - within each dimension, and within the overall integration process - and also to find out the problems they face on their way to successful integration, it explores this phenomenon from the perspective of those children's mothers. Through in-depth interviews with women-immigrants who come from the post-Soviet region, the work reveals meanings that they attach to different aspects of their children's integration into the Czech hosting society. Comparison of media image of Roma and Ukrainians in tabloids

This text deals with a media image of two large minorities in The Czech Republic. It is contribution to wide history of research that deals with question, how media construct and present minorities or foreigners. The author explores the media image of Roma/Gypsies and Ukrainians in Czech tabloids, because it is a specific segment of a media world. The text argues, that presenting of minorities could be different despite researches arguing that it is often negative and stereotypical. This analysis show differences between presenting two minorities and it pays attention to contexts and stereotypes. The author deals with stigmatization stylistic form of tabloid too. About these minorities is significant that both are stigmatized and unheeded while they have a different civil status and a color of skin.

School as an Integration Partner. Interim research report.

The interim research report is a summary of the findings of the School as an Integration Partner project, which deals with the integration of migrant background pupils (non-native language speakers) in Prague's primary schools. The first part of the report deals with the analysis of available statistical data, analysis of previous research and other sources of information on pupils with migrant background. The second part summarizes the findings from an extensive research at primary schools in Prague conducted within the project in the school year 2019-2020 and focused on the situation of pupils with insufficient knowledge of Czech as a language of instruction. The research focused on finding out the number of these pupils at individual primary schools in Prague including the estimation of their language skills. The research also focused on the use of individual support measures by schools, on financing support of migrant background pupils and on the existence of teachers specialized in teaching Czech as a foreign language.

Local integration policies towards immigrants: an example of Prague and Barcelona

The main aim of this thesis is the comparison of approaches to integration of foreigners at the local level in Prague and Barcelona. The author also wants to find out if the policies applied in Barcelona are transferable to the Czech environment. The thesis is based on selected concepts focused on the integration of foreigners into the host society (classical typology of national integration models or integration models based on psychological aspects by Berry) and its components included on the definition of migration and integration policy (Baršová, Barša 2005; Penninx 2016; Bosswick, Heckman 2006 and others). Due to the nature of the work, a qualitative method of research was selected, consisting on the analysis of secondary sources (expert studies, annual reports, governmental and municipal policies, statistical sources). In addition, semi-structured interviews were held with representatives of local governments in Prague and Barcelona. Local integration policies are created in a specific context of the state. The work is also an outline of the migratory history of the Czech Republic and Spain, the institutional provision of migration and integration policies at individual administrative levels (national, regional, local) and their development. Russian "second generation" in Europe : comparative analysis of integration patterns, national identity and transnational ties of the children of Russian migrants in Prague and Paris

A master dissertation is devoted to the comparison of Russian second-generation migrants in two European capitals: Prague and Paris. It analyses ethnical identity of the children of Russian immigrants, existence of transnational ties with the homeland of their parents as well as their integration patterns. The study is based on in-depth interviews with the Russian second generation adolescents and their parents. The analytical part is preceded by a review of the main theoretical concepts used in the study with the focus on the existing theories of migrants' integration in general and second-generation integration in particular. Despite the fact that the results of the study can be generalised neither to the entire Europe, nor to the whole Czech Republic or France, the author tries to outline the main similarities and dissimilarities between the populations of The Russian secondgeneration immigrants in two European capitals as well as between two generations of Russian migrants and brings information about the Russian "new second generation" in general that can be used for further researches or policy-making.
