Binge-watching as a cultural milestone: changes in audience behavior in the era of streaming

This diploma thesis, entitled Binge-watching as a cultural milestone: changing audience behaviour in the streaming era, examines audience behaviour in the context of streaming platform use. The thesis examines both the most prominent trends in the consumption of media content using streaming platforms and the changes in this behaviour caused by streaming platforms. The theoretical part presents the context of streaming platforms available in the Czech Republic, the development of series production and the evolution of ways of consuming series content with respect to available technologies. The thesis also presents significant current trends in viewing behaviour. The research focuses on users of streaming services and their audience habits when watching films and series. Its aim was to define the factors that influence audience viewing behaviour, audience motivations for viewing and changes in this behaviour as they move from consuming media content through broadcast television and illegal pirate websites to using VOD services. Grounded theory was chosen as the research method, based on which several levels of coding and subsequent thematic analysis were conducted. Influence of romantic comedies on young adults'perception of relationships

The diploma thesis "Influence of romantic comedies on young adults' perception of relationships" focuses on the effect of the consumption of romantic comedies. The goal of the thesis is to whether a correlation exists between the consumption of romantic comedies and young adults' attitudes towards romantic relationships, including their opinions, ideas, expectations, and relationship behavior. The theoretical section introduces romantic comedies as a movie genre. It presents the history of the genre, key practices and approaches, and typical characteristics. The work further describes how audio-visual media can potentially influence the audience, presents major theoretic approaches to audience research, and summarizes current knowledge and results in the field of the influence of romantic comedies. The following practical section shows the process and results of the research, which was done using a mixed approach including mainly interviews with young adults. In contrast to previous research, this work emphasized a gender-equal research sample to describe the influence on men as well, even though they are not the primary target group. Parody of Czech Television in the series Dobré ráno, Brno! as a modern form of television entertainment

This thesis deals with the analysis of the television series "Dobré ráno, Brno!" produced by Czech Television. The series serves as a parody of the original show "Dobré ráno", which is broadcast on weekdays and aims to provide "a morning dose of information and music, accompanied by interesting guests and tips". Czech Television has created a series that daringly parodies not only itself as a significant institution, including its employees, but also the television industry as a whole. The series allows for the analysis of key concepts of television entertainment, such as the use of parody, satire, humour, and hyperbole. The aim of this thesis is to determine the nature of parody in the series "Dobré ráno, Brno!" in relation to Czech Television and to examine how the series contributes to a greater genre diversity in television entertainment, particularly in the areas of parody, satire, and humour. Analysis of documentary production of the online streaming service Netflix

This thesis, titled Analysis of the Documentary Production of the Online Streaming Service Netflix, aims to describe the characteristics typical of Netflix's documentary production using a selection of films from 2015 to 2022. The films included in the analysis are American Murder: The Family Next Door, Schumacher, The Social Dilemma, The Tinder Swindler and David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet. Based on semiotic and image analysis, it examines the various elements of film language used in these films - mise-en-scene, camera, editing and sound, including the narrative mode and structure of the film. The thesis also focuses on describing the key features of Netflix production, its use to influence audiences, and the search for the reason behind the popularity of this production. The thesis also includes a quantitative analysis of Netflix's documentary production.

Comparison of Docusoap Series depicting Childbirth in Czech and foreign Media

The thesis "Comparison of Docusoap Series depicting Childbirth in Czech and foreign Media " deals with docusoap series depicting childbirth, both from Czech and foreign production. I will take into account both the conditions and environment in which the shows were produced and the specifics of the countries in which they were filmed. In the first chapter I will deal with the definition of the docusoap genre and its current state in the Czech Republic and abroad, as well as its brief history. In the following, i.e. second chapter, I will deal with Czech programmes, while in the third chapter, foreign programmes will get their own space. I will focus on the content, the form of processing, examples of individual stories, and also the statements of the creators or participants. The fourth chapter will be devoted to the media image of childbirth as such, both in domestic and foreign media. The fifth and final chapter will then be devoted to the analysis itself, which will aim to reveal whether there are any noticeable differences in the way docusoap series on the topic of childbirth are produced in the Czech Republic and abroad, and what can be drawn from this for the docusoap genre as such.

Reactions of Foreign Performers of Popular Music to Selected Social Issues in the 21st Century

The diploma thesis deals with the reactions of foreign performers of popular music to selected social issues in the 21st century. The diploma thesis is divided into a theoretical part, a research methodology and an empirical part. In the theoretical part, the development of popular music is described and its genres are introduced. Selected social issues of today are also theoretically explained. Qualitative analyzes and research questions are defined in the research methodology. The empirical part includes two main types of research. In the first phase, a qualitative analysis of the content of musical texts together with a qualitative analysis of foreign media content is used on musical texts from this century. In-depth interviews are conducted in the second phase of the empirical part. In the conclusion, the results of the empirical part are interpreted and summarized. The aim of this diploma thesis is to find out, through qualitative analyzes and research questions, how world celebrities from the field of popular music stand towards selected social issues of the 21st century and what impact their opinions can have on the general public. A Comparison of Czech Adaptions of the Reality Show Survivor

This diploma thesis deals with the comparison of Czech adaptions of the reality show Survivor - i.e. Trosečník (Prima, 2006), Robinsonův ostrov (Nova, 2017), and Survivor Česko & Slovensko (Nova, 2022). In the theoretical part, reality TV is defined at first - its definition, characteristics, reasons for success, modes of representation, and the difference between reality TV and reality are outlined, history of the format, its classification to subgenres and reality TV in the Czech Republic is introduced. A description of the globalization of television formats and the process of adapting licensed formats follows it. In the analytical part, firstly, the comparison methodology is described, and briefly, the selected adaptions and the original global format are characterized. Subsequently, a comparison of three Czech adaptions of the reality show Survivor is accomplished. In two more recent adaptions, only the show's first series is included in the comparison. The comparison of adaptions is based on the following aspects: the name of the show, program strategy (broadcasting schedule, number, and duration of episodes, sideshow), the cast (contestants and hosts), the visual and audio elements of the show, the episode structure, rules, content selection, and feedback (viewership, reviews).

Comparative analysis of News Broadcasting on Czech Television and TV Nova during the fire in Bohemian Switzerland

The thesis focuses on the comparison of noon and evening news spots in Czech Television and TV Nova. The aim is to find out how much broadcasting time is devoted to the fire in Bohemian Switzerland, which is considered to be one of the largest and worst fires in the Czech Republic. We examine the period from the outbreak of the fire for approximately a week, when the situation is still on going (more precisely 24.7. - 31.7.2022). We analyze the following sessions: Události and Televizní noviny, Zprávy ve 12 and Polední Televizní noviny. We will use a quantitative analysis to provide clear, accurate and verifiable results. In addition to numerical analysis, we will also focus on the order of individual news items in the broadcast and compare events in Bohemian Switzerland with other events that have occurred in Czech Republic and around the world. The aim is to determine whether the media is subject to campaignibility, which means that media favors a particular issue over others, regardless of their actual importance. The results of this thesis could be used for further analyses in the future, which could include a larger research period and more media types.

Narrative TV shows in the context of contemporary Czech Republic and the series Devadesátky (Nineties) as an example

This thesis focuses on the topic of television series production in the context of the contemporary Czech Republic and takes the czech series Devadesátky (Nineties) as an example of a successful series. The theoretical part generally describes television series production in the Czech Republic and briefly outlines its content changes and the factors determining potential popularity of a series. Furthermore, the theoretical part briefly describes the development of the Czech crime series genre from 1993 to the present day, focusing in particular on the series Devadesátky. The practical part then examines the habits of TV series viewers through a questionnaire survey and, with the help of personal interviews with an expert on the issue and the scriptwriter of the series Devadesátky, attempts to test the hypotheses and gain insight into the examined topic. Impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on streaming services and their users

This thesis examines the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on streaming services and their users. It aims to shed light on how the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic, as well as the government measures and lockdowns that stifled social life and locked people in their homes for weeks, affected the use of streaming platforms by their users. This thesis focuses on the main characteristics and types of streaming services, the basic concepts associated with them, and looks at the production of new content as well as their distribution models. The subsequent section discusses the coronavirus and its impact on social behaviour, and then in particular the impact on the film industry in terms of production, content, cinema and film festival operations and of course the streaming services themselves. The final segment of the thesis then analyses and interprets the data collected in the questionnaire survey. Respondents' answers provide the basis for finding solutions to the research questions, which identify which streaming services users use, how many they use concurrently, how much time they spend watching streaming content, what categories of content they watch, or in what ways they use the services, for example in terms of devices or in comparison to other types of media.
