Florián, Pavel ; Lütke Notarp, Ulrike (advisor) ; Köpplová, Barbara (referee)
This diploma thesis explores the evolution of the way Slovaks and Slovakia are portrayed in the Czech press after the 1st of January 1993. For this purpose, it aims to answer the question: 25 years after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, what has changed in the way the Czech print media perceive Slovaks and Slovakia? The way Slovaks and Slovakia are portrayed in the Czech press is always reconstructed using the methods of quantitative and qualitative content analysis, namely in selected three- month periods in the years 1993, 1998, 2004, and 2008. These periods are related to events which for Slovaks and Slovakia, following the dissolution of the Czech and Slovak Federative Republic, are generally perceived as significant. It is essential to understand we are interested in Slovaks and Slovakia as seen by the Czech press. Based on the performed content analyses and their results respectively, the diploma thesis characterizes the ways Slovaks and Slovakia are portrayed in the Czech press in the given periods. These findings are then compared to capture the overall evolution of media portrayal of Slovaks and Slovakia in the Czech press in the course of time. The empirical evidence serves as a base for formulating conclusions and validating the research hypothesis.

Svobodová, Věra ; Trunečková, Ludmila (advisor) ; Köpplová, Barbara (referee)
This diploma thesis maps the media interest in former president Václav Havel by the Czech News Agency during the 10 years following his death in December 2011. It focuses not only on the number of reports, but also compares the individual years with regard to what events influence the number of reports that mention the former president. Using full-text searches in the Czech News Agency's Infobank, metadata codes used by the agency to classify news, and quantitative content analysis with the addition of evaluative elements, the paper tracks which topics most frequently appear in the agency's text service in connection with Václav Havel, whether the president is the main actor in the news, or what the tonality of news texts is in relation to him. The theoretical part defines the basic concepts and theories related to the social and media construction of reality, media image and media logic. The contextual part introduces in rough outlines the personality of Václav Havel. The methodological part deals with the specifics of the news text service offered by Czech News Agency and presents the research methods used. The research part presents the results of the analysis. These show that the number of news items mentioning Havel does not tend to decrease over time, but responds to events in society. The...
Building an Intelligence Information Network in 1914-1918 on the example of "Czechoslovak Independence" and "La Nation Tchéque"
Neuwerthová, Kristýna ; Cebe, Jan (advisor) ; Köpplová, Barbara (referee)
The diploma thesis analyses the topic of building a foreign intelligence network and its activities during the First World War (1914-1918) on the example of the Československá samostatnost and La Nation Tchéque magazines. The introduction maps the steps of Tomas Garrigue Masaryk after his emigration in 1914. Masaryk was the main personality of the whole foreign affair, but the thesis also deals with other representatives of the foreign resistance, such as Lev Sychrava, who was responsible for the issuing of Československá samostatnost, or Ernest Denis, who together with Edvard Beneš edited La Nation Tchéque. The work is based primarily on archival sources with special regard to the collection of the Editorial Offices of the Československá samostatnost and La Nation Tchéque, which is stored in the Military Historical Archive. This collection contains correspondence from both editorial offices, draft articles for both papers and other auxiliary materials from which the content of both papers was formed. The content of the entire collection is gradually revealed in the thesis. At the end of the thesis there is a case study on the topic of propaganda of the Czechoslovak affair in the content of Československá samostatnost on the example of a specific event, which is the Manifesto of Czech Writers from...

Podzimková, Pavlína ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Köpplová, Barbara (referee)
For my diploma thesis I chose the topic Transfer of Germans from the Šumperk region and its reflection in Moravský sever weekly. The aim of the diploma thesis is to analyze the media discourse of the expulsion of Sudeten Germans from the Šumperk region and the settlement of this area by the Czech population. For this purpose the thesis analyzes the content of Moravský sever weekly in 1945 and 1946. I chose Moravský sever weekly for the analysis as an important weekly within the region. The first part of the thesis deals with the development of Czech-German relations from the middle of the 19th century until the end of the Second World War. In next chapters I will try to briefly describe the expulsion of Sudeten Germans from Czechoslovakia and the settlement of the borderland by the Czech population. Finally, the theoretical part deals with the description of the Šumperk region and its history and demography with focus on relations between the Czechs and the Germans. The second part of the thesis presents conclusions of the content analysis. The media portrayal of the Germans in Moravský sever weekly was mostly negative and their expulsion was perceived as necessary. Conclusions of the analysis also show which topics were most frequently mentioned and which language and narrative techniques were...

Ivasková, Jarmila ; Osvaldová, Barbora (advisor) ; Köpplová, Barbara (referee)
The aim of the diploma thesis entitled Milan Weiner and his position in the media is to map the life and professional career of journalist Milan Weiner, and to highlight his contribution to Czechoslovak Radio. This professional biographical study is organised in chronological order and covers a period of 45 years - from 1924 to 1969 (i.e. from Weiner's birth to his death). Most of the chapters begin with the political-social environment of the time to provide context, as they had a significant influence on Weiner's existence due to his Jewish origin. The main part of the thesis deals with the activities of Weiner in Czechoslovak Radio, where he joined in 1963 as the head of the Redakce mezinárodního života. The text also describes Weiner's family background, his stay in concentration camps and his work as a foreign-news correspondent for the Rudé právo and the ČTK in Beijing. While working on this study, the method of comparison was used on the gained materials, as well as the method of oral history based on a personal interview conducted with the daughter of Milan Weiner, Jana Šmídová.

Roubalová, Ivana ; Köpplová, Barbara (advisor) ; Cebe, Jan (referee)
After serving few hundred years under the reign of Habsburc monarchy the Czech nation was trying to establish itself like a more independent part of the monarchy or like a new and independent state outside from the Habsburc monarchy. Activities of this movement were called National renaissance and it culminated during the First World War at that time led by Mr. Tomas Garrigue Masaryk, who was supporter of independent Czech state formed as democratic republic. The end of the First World War was a big victory for efforts to establish the new Czech state with cooperation with the similar efforts of Slovaks. To support this efforts there was created a new nation of Czechoslovaks and all the claims for territory and new state for this nation were done together with Slovaks. A new map for eastern Europe was laid out in the Paris conference in 1919 and seven new states were established in that conference as independent and democratic, one of them was Czechoslovak republic, usually known under the name Czechoslovakia. Author of this dissertation used the method of historical analysis to describe the importance of the Press Department for establishing democratic Czechoslovakia. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
