Physiology of special mirror eyes of molluscs, crustaceans and deep-sea fish

The majority of image forming systems in animal eyes are based on refractive optics. However, there are several eye types that use as a main image forming devises biological mirrors hence they are called mirror eyes. Biological mirrors are special type of tissue that reflects light beams usually by means of the constructive interference on multi-layers of alternating refractive indices. The mirror eye arrangement can be found mostly in animals living in the dim or deep water. Different types of mirror eyes have been described among molluscs, crustaceans and fishes. Moreover, the reflective superposition eyes of decapod crustaceans served as an inspiration for construction of the lobster-eye X- ray telescopes used in astrophysics. In this thesis, various types of mirror eyes are described. The overview of animals with mirror eyes is supplemented by description of their habitat. Finally, different types of mirror eyes are compared and their possible biomimetic application especially in optical technology is discussed. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Study of Cataclysmic Variables with the Satellites LOFT and Gaia

The goal of this paper is to discuss the capabilities of ESA satellite missions Gaia (already in space) and LOFT\n(considered for the ESA M4 slot) for investigation of cataclysmic variables (CVs). Both Gaia and LOFT\ncan contribute to study of CVs and related objects. Spectrophotometry and low dispersion spectroscopy are the most important for CV analyses with the observations of Gaia. We present the possible strategies for investigation of CVs in the sampled photometric\nand spectroscopic data provided by Gaia. E.g. statistical properties of the long-term activity of various types of CVs can be determined from them. LOFTcan be a promising satellite to provide a sensitive X-ray monitor which will enable to investigate the little studied long-term activity of various types of CVs (especially the magnetic ones) in the X-ray band.
GLORIA and Study of Cataclysmic Variables

We report here on the ongoing EU FP7 Project GLORIA (GLObal Robotic-telescopes Intelligent Array) with emphasis on possibility of investigation of cataclysmic variables by users. GLORIA will enable the rst free and open-access network of robotic telescopes in the world. We show several examples of the not often used topics (but suitable for GLORIA) for the studies of activity of cataclysmic variables, e.g. search for outbursts in intermediate polars and the uctuations of/nbrightness in their quiescence, and investigation of the optical counterparts of supersoft X-ray sources.
History of development of X-ray optics in Czech Republic

The summarizing paper sums up more than 40 years of research and development of grazing incidence X-ray optics in the Czech Republic. The origin of astronomical X-ray optics is related to spaceInterkosmos programme Interkosmos. Overall sixty pieces of Wolter I X-ray objectives were manufactured in key cooperation with the Optical Workshop of the Academy of Science in Turnov. Eight of them were used in four different space missions. After the end of Interkosmos project the development of X-ray optics was reoriented to X-ray laboratory tools for crystallography, to Lobster eye systems for wide-angle space monitoring and to Kirkpatrick-Baez imaging system for large X-ray space telescopes. At present, the novel concepts and technologies for X-ray space telescope considered in future ESA, NASA and JAXA missions are being developed
