Artificial inteligence and its application in the coccolith determination
Voženílková, Kristýna ; Holcová, Katarína (advisor) ; Svobodová, Andrea (referee)
Automatic determination of objects using neural networks has been applied in many fields of study, however, this approach has only rarely been used in paleontology. The goal of this bachelor thesis is to evaluate a method of automatic determination of coccoliths using neural networks. This method has been proposed by the Cogniware company. Cyclicargolithus floridanus and Cyclicargolithus abisectus have been chosen for the testing of the neural network. So far, the network has been trained to determine only C. floridanus, and managed to recognize the typical speciman of this species with 99% accuracy. This thesis provides a basic overview of the coccolith group and neural networks. It also describes the method used to prepare data for the neural network. Key words: calcareous nannoplankton, Reticulofenestra, morfology, artificial intelligence, neural network
Geochemical markers from foraminiferal tests as a tool for reconstruction of paleoceanological environments: a case study from the Miocene of the Central Paratethys
Scheiner, Filip ; Holcová, Katarína (advisor) ; Grunert, Patrick (referee) ; Demeny, Attila (referee)
This thesis deals with the use of geochemical proxies on foraminifera for paleoceanographical, paleoecological and paleoenvironmental interpretations in the fossil epicontinental sea - the Central Paratethys during the Langhian. It discusses the used methodologies and approaches that were specially chosen to fit the problematic of the studied area such as the single test analysis of carbon and oxygen stable isotopes on foraminifera. Other geochemical methods were represented by Mg/Ca based paleothermomethry and by several organic geochemistry proxies on whole rock samples (n-alkane indices, δ13 Corg, and carbon ratios - TOC/TIC/TC). These were further combined with foraminiferal paleoecological data, which allowed identification of particular water masses in the studied region as well as the prevailing circulation patterns/regimes during the studied interval in the Paratethyan marine realm. Additionally, there were interpreted various regional paleoenvironmental and paleoecological consequences. The Paratethys had similar hydrography of surficial waters with the Mediterranean, conversely to the bottom waters that were different, probably of a regional origin with their own evolution during the studied time interval. The anti-estuarine circulation regime, which was probably linked with the closure...
Ostracods of selected stratigraphic levels of the Ordovician of the Prague Basin
Lajblová, Karolína ; Kraft, Petr (advisor) ; Holcová, Katarína (referee) ; Kyška Pipík, Radovan (referee)
The submitted doctoral thesis presents an introductory comment and a set of four publications focused on the revision of the Ordovician ostracods of the Prague Basin. The research of them was insufficient in past in contrast to the diversity and abundance of ostracod material recorded in this area. Major characteristics of the study group with a focus on morphology, ecology and history of research are discussed in the introductory chapters. In the following parts, the attention is paid to the ostracods of the Lower, Middle and Upper Ordovician of the Prague Basin and their comparison with assemblages of the other paleoregions. The published papers are focused on the comprehensive revisions of the ostracods of the Klabava, Šárka and Králův Dvůr formations. The studies resulted in systematic monographs supplemented with a study on the ontogeny of the widespread species Conchoprimitia osekensis (Přibyl, 1979). The taxonomy, palaeogeography and overall diversity of studied Ordovician species are also included and discussed.
Planktonic ecosystems of the Upper Jurassic and Cretaceous (calcareous nannoplankton, calpionellids)
Svobodová, Andrea ; Holcová, Katarína (advisor) ; Skupien, Petr (referee) ; Oszczypko-Ciowes, Marta (referee)
The presented PhD thesis is compiled as a commentary to four published papers, which deal with planktonic assamblages of the Upper Jurassic and Cretaceous, namely with calcareous nannofossils and calpionellids. The first part of the dissertation thesis describes the main characteristics of the studied fossil groups with focus on their morphology, palaeoecology, evolution and systematics. The chapter of calcareous nannoplankton gives special attention to the biostratigraphicaly important genus Nannoconus Kampter 1931. Next chapters describe the methods of the laboratory processing of the sediments and the geological settings of the studied areas. The thesis is focused on two areas. At first the selected localities in the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin, i.e. Upper Turonian and Upper Coniacian, are described. Generally, the Upper Cretaceous platform sediments of the middle European basins are rich in calcareous nannoplankton. These fossils represent important marker for biostratigraphical and palaeoecological interpretations. The second part describes carbonate rocks of the Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous of the Tethyan area. In this case, calcareous nannoplankton and calpionellids are an essential part of the modern multidisciplinary form of the Jurassic- Cretaceous (J/K) boundary interval research....
Marine microorganisms: the complex project in the learning for geology and biology at grammar schools
Minaříková, Veronika ; Holcová, Katarína (advisor) ; Matějka, Dobroslav (referee)
This thesis deals with modifications of professional microscopic methods for classroom use. There is a laboratory prepared sample Miocene age with marine microfossils of the Carpathian Foredeep. It was created manual for teachers, where is provided detailed instructions from finding a suitable locality, through sample collection, after their processing, and consequent observations. Each founded microfossil group is briefly characterised. The proces is properly modificate for realization of laboratories with elements of inquiry- based instruction at schools. At least this topic is incorporated in Framework Education Programmes and selected sample of textbooks. Key words: laboratories, microfossils, Miocene, badenian, Carpathian Foredeep, manual for teachers, inquiry-based instruction
Imprint of the MMCT in the marine record in the Carpathian Foredeep
Suchánek, Vladimír ; Holcová, Katarína (advisor) ; Hudáčková-Hlavatá, Natália (referee)
The theoretical part of this thesis is divided into three main chapters that deal with the issue storm deposits and their presence in the sedimentary record of borehole HR-1. One of the chapters dedicated to foraminifera tests as taphonomic indicators, which are stratigraphically and paleoecologically significant. Within the frame of this thesis it was thought to foraminifera more sedimentological than palaeontological or rather the tests of foraminifera were considered as specific particles, which on the seabed or in the water column were moving such as a grain of sand. The principal parameters for were selected size of test, mechanical wearing and life strategy (benthic forms inhabiting at the bottom and planktonic forms inhabiting within the whole or only in some parts of the water column). The second theoretical chapter is dealing with the tempestites, especially the condition of origin, identification and interchangeability for deposits of turbidite currents, Hummocky cross-stratification (HCS) and relation between tempestites and climate changes or atmospheric CO2. The last part of theory is devoted to overview of the geological formation of the Carpathian Foredeep and its evolution during the Neogene. This part is also supplemented with a description of the place and the borehole including...
