Self-efficacy in transition from elementary school to high school

This diploma thesis focuses on changes of academic self-efficacy at the time of transition to high school, as well as students' expectation about this transition. Academic self-efficacy is one of the main predictors of school success, also affecting emotional experience and aspira- tional level of pupils. There were two groups of participants that were tested before the transition in April (N=321) and then after the transition in September and November (N = 169). To measure self-efficacy, Myself as a learner scale and Child's self-efficacy scale were used. We also used the Emotions connected with change inventory to measure the expectation of transition to high school. The results confirmed the relationship between academic self-efficacy and school grades. Contrary to expectations, a positive perception of change by pupils during this transition was demonstrated. The most important area for adolescents are their future classmates. The self-efficacy decline during the transition to high school has not been confirmed, while girls have a higher level of self-efficacy than boys. Students of grammar schools have a signifi- cantly higher degree of self-efficacy than secondary technical school students.
