The image of the city in contemporary British literature. The city in the works of Martin Amis and Ian McEwan
Chalupský, Petr ; Hilský, Martin (advisor) ; Nováková, Soňa (referee) ; Grmela, Josef (referee)
The city and its milieu have always been a source of inspiration and motifs for artists and writers are no exception. The process of urbanization brought along rapid social, political, cultural and economic changes which evoked immediate responses of various kinds, from welcoming and celebrating ones to those of rejection and condemnation, from those who were traditionally the most sensitive about such phenomena ~ men of letters. As a result of this fact, the image of the city has been present in literature since the first urban societies appeared and to trace it back in detail would mean a different aim from that which this work is going to follow. The main concern of my thesis is contemporary British literature and therefore I would like to focus on how the city is reflected in the works of British writers in the last two decades of the twentieth century. To provide certain general coherence, continuity and context of the theme, I will also put down a brief outline of how the image of the city has been developing and changing in English literature since the late Victorian period trying to show that the phenomenon is very deep-rooted in the tradition of the English imagination. If we should mention the most notable contemporary British writers whose works are set in cities or in some other way depict the...

Influence of Czech Immigrants on Willa Cather's Literary Work
Vomáčková, Tatiana ; Ženíšek, Jakub (advisor) ; Grmela, Josef (referee)
My interest in Willa Cather developed from reading her novels "My Antonia", "O Pioneers!" and several short stories dealing with European immigrants, especially those from Bohemia. I found it interesting that an American writer devoted so much attention to portray characters of another nationality with such a consistent approach. In this work I present available information on the background of her motivation and trace her sources for understanding the expatriate Bohemian community in the United States, in order to describe their representatives in fiction. I would like to draw a connecting line between the historical context and the literary portrayal of immigrants from Bohemia. Furthermore, I would like to introduce the real life model for Antonia Shimerda in "My Antonia" and depict some of the general characteristics ascribed to Bohemians at the break of the twentieth century. This thesis will deal with the factual, as well as the implicit, characteristics of Bohemian characters shown in her writings. I intend to compare Cather's point of view with the perspective of others who added their voice to the literary discussion of this subject matter.
Roles of Women in the Works of Two Jewish-American Female Authors: Rebecca Goldstein and Allegra Goodman
Kozáková, Tereza ; Ženíšek, Jakub (advisor) ; Grmela, Josef (referee)
The Jewish-American situation seen through the lenses of Goldstein's and Goodman's works bring us closer to understanding the challenges the Jews in America have had to face. American culture provides open possibilities and chances that Jews had not been used to. This change starts the process of gradual assimilation in the forms of new educational opportunities, new views of gender roles, a modern approach to life where all people can be appreciated and successful, women not excluded. The impact of place and culture shapes the face of traditional Judaism, which needs to find ways to retain orthodox ways and keep Jews united against the possible dangers that might come from the outside. Yet progressive assimilation is inevitable and concerns all American Jews, even those who try to seek shelter in the womb of the orthodox communities. The changes take place especially in the new generations who do not have much connection to the past and Jewish experience on the far distant continent. They create their own version of Judaism based partly on the ways of their parents and partly on what American society offers. American values are gradually taken into consideration and influence the views of the young Jews. The new face of the religion is no longer what Judaism used to look like in the old shtetls. New rules...

Grmela, Jan ; Pácha, Petr (referee) ; Stehlík, Dušan (advisor)
The aim of this thesis is to describe the field of the soil compaction. The thesis introduces the particular test methods of the soil compaction, their principles and the implementation techniques. The practical part deals with the examination of a fine-grained sample in a laboratory condition. The compaction is achieved by various methods. In accordance with the compaction results, the soil is further examined for the Immediate Bearing Index (IBI) and California Bearing Ratio (CBR) after four day long saturation in water. The examination of the achieved results and finding the most suitable method for the fine-grained material is the outcome of the thesis.
