Through the eyes of a child. Child as a literary subject in contemporary italian prose
Přívozníková, Pavla ; Flemrová, Alice (advisor) ; Pelán, Jiří (referee) ; Čaplyginová, Olga (referee)
Key words prism of children - child protagonist - literary subject - narrator - focalizer - focalization -character - narratology - Gérard Genette - Mieke Bal - conteporary Italian prose Abstract The dissertation, titled Through the Eyes of a Child and subtitled The Child as a Literary Subject in Contemporary Italian Prose, attempts to map and describe the recurring presence of a child protagonist in contemporary Italian prose for adult readers. Drawing on the corpus of twenty novels spanning from 1997 to 2017, it shows how the prism of children manifested itself in Italian novels of that period. The thesis is divided into five chapters: theoretical, historical, analytical, synthetic, and a conclusion. The first chapter clarifies what a literary subject is, and through the prism of the narratological theory of Gérard Genette and his followers Mieke Bal and Sklomith Rimmon-Kennan, she defines three basic subject roles (narrator, focalizer, character) that a child occupies in a narrative. The second chapter shows when and how a child protagonist first made appearance in the history of Italian literature. The third chapter focuses on the narratological analysis of the novels in question, which, with the help of the theoretical terms established in the first chapter, divides them into two groups: novels with a...
Sergio Atzeni: Sardinia - love, hate
Svobodová, Soňa ; Pelán, Jiří (advisor) ; Flemrová, Alice (referee)
The purpose of this paper is to introduce the contemporary Sardinian author Sergio Atzeni (1952-1995) and to carry out a detailed analyses of his four novels written between 1986 and 1995: Apologo del giudice bandito (1986), Il figlio di Bakunn (1991), Il quinto passo l'addio (1995) and Passavamo sulla terra leggeri (1996), published posthumously. In the early 1970s, after his high school and university studies, Sergio Atzeni works as a journalist for the local daily papers and magazines. He publishes prose works, short stories and poetry that clearly reveal his narrative talent. From the very beginnig of his carreer Atzeni's work is marked by his love for Sardinia which is in the centre of his attention and which makes him write about its history, folklore and people. Yet he is very much aware of the ethnic and existential unrest of his generation and of its failures which he partially shares with it. In 1987, driven also by the bitter disappointment he felt towards the Sardinians who didn't seem to appreciate him adequately, he leaves the island to travel and work in Europe and in various Italian cities, among others Torino and Milano. He settles in Sant'Ilario d'Enza and the most productive period of his life starts. He writes narrative works, translations and essays for many prestigious publishing...

Comparison of Italian text and Czech translation of Věčný pekelný žalář
Jasanská, Zuzana ; Pelán, Jiří (advisor) ; Flemrová, Alice (referee)
The task of this diploma thesis is to confront the writing La prigione eterna dell'Inferno that was written by Giovanni Battista Manni with its Czech translation that was made by Václav Matěj Šteyer. This piece of writing, La prigione, was published in 1666 and the Šteyer's work in 1676. The writer Šteyer translated the text directly from the Italian one according to the fourth publication of Manni's master copy from the year 1669 because Manni changed there some passages in last two chapters and these changes are seen in the Czech version too. Neither Manni's writing was not original. He was inspired by a tract that was written by the Spanish Jesuit, Juan Eusebio Nieremberg. I observed the way how Šteyer proceeded in the translation of Manni's master copy, especially in the field of lexicon, syntax and stylistics. I also concerned how the rhetoric of Jesuit schools is presented by both authors.
Italo Svevo's novels
Sklenářová, Simona ; Pelán, Jiří (advisor) ; Flemrová, Alice (referee)
This thesis aims to introduce the Italian writer Italo Svevo and his three key novels: Una vita (A Life), Senilità (As a man grows older) and La coscienza di Zeno (Zeno's Conscience). At the beginning I briefly summarize the history of multicultural Trieste, which had considerable influence on the author and which is the setting of the three novels. The bio- bibliographical section will chronologically portray Svevo's personal and professional life and his literary and dramatic works. The connecting point of his works is "inettitudine", or indifference, ineptitude and passivity of the main characters lives. Further, one of Svevo's topics handled repeatedly is the family, relations between its individual members, love and rivalry. The work focuses on Svevo's novels. Finally, I try to compare all three works, to find differences between them and summarize the overall continuity and transformation of Svevo's heroes.
The king and the pilgrim. To the question of the identity of the characters in the Italian novels of the 20th century
Štichauerová, Olga ; Flemrová, Alice (advisor) ; Hrbata, Zdeněk (referee)
This work is focussed on the question of problematic identity of literary characters. The characters are chosen from the modern italian novels to show the theme of crisis of a human identity as a constitutive element for the literature of the twentieth century. The first novel which is being interpreted and compared is "Un re umorista" by modernist Alberto Cantoni. The main character of this novel is the king of noname country who feels his "king's" identity as a role, only a mask. He considered himslef as two different persons, but one of them, the king, is not authentic, real. The second novel, called Il fu Mattia Pascal by Luigi Pirandello, is the story of the identity as a social sign and its loss. The identity of human being in Pirandello's conception is closely linked with a society and its rules and law. To have an identity means to be a part of society, community, family and the only meaning of identity is the social meaning. Mattia Pascal lose his identity when he is said to be dead. At fisrt he finds his situation as a challenge and new chance to be free, to start a new life and create it from basis on his own. He made a new identity for himself with a fictitious past and name. Then he tried to make this identity real and valid but eventually he realised that it is not possible and he could not...

Zdeňková, Petra ; Pelán, Jiří (advisor) ; Flemrová, Alice (referee)
Michele Prisco. Michele Prisco's narrative writings in the context of the Italian literature of the second half of the twentieth century Our thesis was dedicated to the the Italian writer Michele Prisco (1920 - 2003). On the basis of the detailed analysis of some of author's novels and stories we tried to place his narrative literature into the context of Italian literature of the second half of the twentieth century. Michele Prisco, a writer, journalist, literary and film critic entered literature with a story collection. La provincia addormentata (Sleepy province) in 1949. During exactly fifty-year long writer's career he published eleven novels and a number of narrative collections. He was introduced to the Czech scene by translations of his novels Gli eredi del vento (1950, Czech translation - Dědicové větru, Heirs of the Wind, J. Hajný 1983) and Una spirale di nebbia (1966, Czech translation - Cár mlhy, A Spiral of Mist, J. Hajný 1984). Prisco's narrative literature gives a compact impression even though it came through a certain development in the thematic and above all compositional plan. The background of nearly all Prisco's stories and novels is his native land in the area of Vesuvius or Naples. The author is not concerned only with the description of the region and its inhabitants but mainly with...
Venice as an allegory of modern man. Paolo Barbaro's literary writings
Právě tuto knihu pokládám za současný nejplastičtěji vykreslený literárněfilozofický obraz tohoto města1 a její poetická výstavba mě inspirovala k vytyčení hlavního cíle mé práce, jímž bude literárně-sémiologický rozbor tohoto díla směřující k zachycení benátského prostoru jakožto zrcadla duše moderního člověka.
Family relations in select works of Elsa Morante and Alberto Moravia
Crossing the boundaries. Selected themes from the work of Fulvio Tomizza
Kosová, Karolína ; Pelán, Jiří (advisor) ; Flemrová, Alice (referee)
There are "outer" and "inner" boundaries. These are constantly tempted and crossed by people. Boundaries exist on maps as borderlines protected by heavy barriers or as small stonewalls that separate neighbors' fields in the countryside. There are boundaries between the sea and the mainland, the village and the city, between two nations. Fulvio Tomizza, whose work is analyzed in this study, lived with these boundaries. He has been coming to terms with the outer boundaries his whole life in his work Incomprehensible Boundaries. He wrote of the boarder line between the "free world of Italy", where he had in fact never reached his inner freedom and between Istria that since 1954 belonged to the "unfree part of the world". He was well familiar with the boundaries between Italian and Slavic population from the Istria area, since the worlds of these two ethnic groups were clashing inside him. He had therefore dedicated his written work to undo these boundaries that caused separation and rather conjugated them and created space for meeting of cultures and everyday life influences. And so the inner boundaries, he has mediated to us in his writings became "points of connection" between the past and present, reality and dream, life and death. He himself presents a great example for "crossing of boundaries"; his...
