Ficek, František ; Novotný, Josef (advisor) ; Verner, Vladimír (referee)
Interventions using Community-led total sanitation approach (CLTS) in developing countries: an analysis of practical experience Nearly one billion people in developing countries lack an access to basic sanitation facilities and still practice open defecation (OD). In recent years one approach has gained notable popularity among other approaches for improving sanitation, Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS), which ultimately aims to establish new social norms that determine behavioral change leading to elimination of OD. While many perceive this approach as a revolutionary way of improving sanitation, it is criticized for its use of unethical practices and its effectiveness has been questioned. This thesis assesses opinions and experience of CLTS implementers obtained via interviews with 19 practitioners from 14 developing countries. Interviews were analyzed using qualitative research methods and evaluated in a context of theoretical knowledge concerning behavioral change, sanitation and hygiene. Obtained insights overall showed that practitioners consider CLTS as an effective tool and are satisfied with its application, but at the same time they are aware of limits and controversies associated with it. Ficek, František ; Jelen, Libor (advisor) ; Těšinová, Michaela (referee)
Regional distribution of development aid in Cambodia Abstract This bachelor thesis, examines development aid distribution in Cambodia, specifically focused on the distribution and allocation of development projects that target reproductive health and education. Within the introduction, the history and current situation in Cambodia is presented, followed by a discussion of current approaches to development aid. The reproductive health and education issues will also be examined as well as the continuing discourse of development aid allocation. The research analyses the relationship between development interventions and reproductive health or education indicators on provincial level. The main outcome in Cambodia's development aid only highlights the distribution of aid with regard to the level of development in several cases; allocation of aid is mostly influenced by other factors rather than recipient need. Key words: Cambodia, development aid, allocation, distribution, reproductive health, education, official development assistance, non-governmental organizations
Chinese development assistance in Central Asia
Mlíková, Anna ; Ficek, František (advisor) ; Horálek, Adam (referee)
This bachelor thesis examines Chinese development assistance in Central Asia, specifically in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. Over the past few years China has become the largest donor in the region, which contributes to China's growing influence. This thesis sets out to explain political motives of Chinese development assistance and analyse Chinese projects in the countries. In this thesis I explain the traditional concepts of development aid and the Chinese alternative, I also describe the development of foreign relations of the People's Republic of China with the countries of Central Asia, and Chinese activities and interests in the region. In my own analysis, I examine the allocation of Chinese development assistance by sector, and total amount of funding distributed according to traditional and Chinese definitions of development cooperation. The main result of this thesis is that the provision of Chinese development assistance in the region is determined primarily by China's own strategic and political interests, rather than altruistic interest in economic growth and improvement of living conditions in the countries of interest. Key words: development assistance, China, Central Asia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, political influence, Belt and Road Initiative
