Carpathian German Minority 1953-1990: Changes of Homeland Images in Expellee Journal Karpatenpost

The master's thesis deals with the linguistic images of homeland (Heimat) in the expellee journal Karpatenpost. The research subject is the newspaper of the displaced Carpathian Germans, Karpatenpost, which began to be published in the Federal Republic in the early 1950s under the auspices of the Carpathian German Expellee Association. This periodical dealt with issues of homeland and intensively discussed the state of the Carpathian German minority. It contains memories from the old homeland and information about the state of the Carpathian German minority in the Federal Republic. Therefore, Karpatenpost can be considered an authentic source of the displaced Slovak German-speaking minority. Discourse analysis was chosen as the method, which shows that in the expellee journal Karpatenpost, there are semantic shifts in the concept of Heimat. The loss of the territorial old homeland forced the expellees to retreat into the homeland of memory. Their ideas about the old homeland are often idyllic and exalted. However, the confrontation with transforming familiar spaces during the expellees' journeys conditioned a re-definition of the concept.

Sartre and His Perception by Czech Intellectuals in 1960s

The relationships between the power blocs during the Cold war have been researched by scholars. The question of the influence of Western ideas and representatives on the political thought in Czechoslovakia is still discussed. Although major differences were happening due to the work of institutions, their functioning was not possible without specific personalities. The aim of this thesis is to show how Jean-Paul Sartre and his arrival to Prague in 1960s did influence Czech intellectuals. The issue is approached by the review of the biography of the French philosopher, highlighting crucial events that linked him more with the Czechoslovak society, and then analyzing the way the Czech intellectuals reacted to his ideas and statements. Sartre was chosen as an intellectual who was uniting both, the East and the West, and went through a change of views, after the occurrence of several international events with the direct intervention of the USSR. Realistic views of the Czech representatives are facing relatively optimistic ideas of Sartre on the reformation of the Marxist ideology and preservation of it as the ruling one.

The Bayreuth Music Festival in Nazi Germany

The topic of the bachelor thesis is the Bayreuth Music Festival in Nazi Germany. It is an important music and theatre festival associated mainly with the personality of the German composer Richard Wagner, who founded it. This composer is often associated with Nazi ideology for several reasons, which will be discussed in more detail in the theoretical part of the thesis, which also deals with the issue of Nazi propaganda in the media and propaganda in connection with music. After the appointment of Adolf Hitler as German Chancellor and the rise of Nazism to power, the Bayreuth Music Festival, like other cultural events, was brought under Nazi control and used as a political tool for propaganda. Their operation was thus significantly affected at this time and subsequently during the Second World War. The practical part of the thesis focuses primarily on the course and form of the Bayreuth Music Festival between 1933 and 1945, as well as on Adolf Hitler's participation in the festival regarding, among other things, his political speeches, the organization of receptions for artists, the honouring of the late composer Richard Wagner, and the financing of the festival. His personal relations with the Wagner family and the Bayreuth Music Festival are also mentioned in connection with the press.

Schickeria. Bayern Munich's left-wing ultra group and the concept of critical loyalty

Ultras rank among the most loyal supporters of their clubs, but these movements are also often the subject of controversy, whether because of their radical right-wing views or violence in stadiums. The German supporter scene is specific, as many of the local ultras supporting football clubs fight against commercialisation, globalisation and are not characterised by right- wing views. This thesis discusses one of the most important fan groups in Germany, Schickeria München. Schickeria supports the football club FC Bayern Munich, which could be described as the richest and most successful German team. The club is run by its former players or businessmen and officials, who occasionally make decisions that conflict with Schickeria's views. Fans and management are thus in many situations at odds with each other, debating the future direction and values of the club. Using the example of the relationship between Schickeria and the club's management, the concept of critical loyalty is illustrated, which to a large extent describes the fans' attitude towards the actions of their club.

Integration Policies of Denmark and Sweden

Tato bakalářská práce bude analyzovat integrační politiky Dánska a Švédska. Konkrétně bude poukázat na odlišnosti či podobnosti integračních politik a jejich zaměření na pracovní trh ve výše zmíněných zemích. Výzkumnou metodou byla zvolena komparativní analýza, která ustanoví, jaký stát má restriktivnější a účinnější integrační politiku a integraci na pracovní trh. Statistické údaje indexu MIPEX budou v tomto ohledu hrát důležitou roli, a nejen díky nim bude srovnání výše zmíněných aspektů možné.

Guillaume Affair in Media

The bachelor thesis "The Guillaume Affair from the Media's Perspective" deals with the reaction of selected periodicals to the event in which the West German counterintelligence exposed the Stasi agent Günter Guillaume in Willy Brandt's chancellery. After the Spiegel affair, this was another major event in German history, and even in this case the media played a key role too. After the arrest of Guillaume and his wife Christel, the German media published many articles about Guillaume's life, his career, and the background to the affair. Increasing pressure from the press and fellow party members eventually forced Willy Brandt to resign as Chancellor of the Federal Republic, leaving his post to Helmut Schmidt. Brandt's resignation is one of the reasons why the media in East Germany, which had preferred to remain silent in similar cases, picked up on the affair. However, the popularity of the former mayor of West Berlin was also high in the GDR, which is why several articles dealing with the Guillaume affair appeared in the media there. The aim of this thesis is to map the reaction of the weekly Der Spiegel and the daily Neues Deutschland to the Guillaume affair and to find out how the selected periodicals agreed and disagreed in their coverage of the event.

Museums as Memory Places and "Ostalgy: Reflexions of Socialism in Czechoslovakia and in GDR

The diploma thesis deals with the image of socialism and everyday life in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the German Democratic Republic in museums thematically focused on the past regime. The aim of the research, which was based on the method of content analysis of two museum exhibitions (the Museum of Communism in Prague and the DDR Museum in Berlin were analysed), was to compare what image of socialism and everyday life under the socialist dictatorship museums create and what differences can be found. Attention was directed to exhibitions devoted to everyday life, which were examined, among other things, in terms of the reflection of ostalgie within the museum exhibition. The resulting comparison showed a different view of the era in the GDR and the Czechoslovakia within museum exhibitions, and confirmed the hypothesis that in the German case the ostalgie phenomenon would be manifested more prominently. While in the Berlin museum the focus is mainly on the everyday life of the citizens, which is portrayed here in a positive light and which in some thematic modules evokes almost ostalgic echoes, in the Prague museum the past regime is perceived more as a time of repression, as evidenced by the critical stand of the authors of the exhibition towards the omnipresent propaganda, which is...

The left-wing orientation of the Bauhaus School as a reason for closing it?

This bachelor's thesis deals with the topic of the termination of the Bauhaus school in Germany in connection with its political culture and the rise of right-wing forces in Germany during the 1920s and 1930s. The Bauhaus was a state school for most of its existence and as such had to correspond to the political culture of the time and place. The first two chapters deal with the circumstances that led to the establishment of the school, and with the very beginnings of Bauhaus in Weimar. The next chapters deal with Dessau and Berlin, where the school gradually moved, which are set in the context of the post-war political situation in Germany. The personalities of all three principals who worked at the school, as well as other pedagogues and the students themselves, played a significant role in the development of the school's situation. Two separate chapters are devoted to the emergence of Nazism, Nazi art and the Nazis' view of the avant-garde as a depraved art. The conclusion of the thesis deals with the end of the school in Berlin and the reflection of the Bauhaus after the Second World War in both parts of divided Germany.
