The impacts of climate change on the European populations of Orthoptera (Insecta: Orthoptera)
Horáčková, Kateřina ; Šípek, Petr (advisor) ; Dvořák, Tomáš (referee)
Climate change has a significant impact on the environment and ecosystems around the world. Insects od the order Orthoptera, which form an important part of biodiversity and participate in a number of ecosystem functions, are no exception. This bachelor's thesis tries to summarize the available information on the effects of climate change on Orthoptera and on their ecological interactions in Europe. In the individual chapters, I analyze the effect of climate change on insects in general and, as well as on my focal group. The results imply that that alpine species will either shift their distribution areas to higher altitudes or shift their northern limit of occurrence. If such species no longer have anywhere to expand, there is a risk of losing their optimal living conditions with all possible consequences. In the Czech Republic, the northward expansion of the distribution ranges (spread) of some of the 96 species living here has been recorded. An example can be the katydid species Ruspolia nitidula, which is newly spreading, for example, in the Odra aluvium. Other species are for example katydids Phaneroptera falcata and Phaneroptera nana whose spread is also attributed to climate change. Key words: Orthoptera, climate change, distribution, Europe, ecology, change in physiology insects
Political Power in Political Sociology
Hlavička, Petr ; Dvořák, Tomáš (advisor) ; Císař, Ondřej (referee)
Master thesis Author: Bc. Petr Hlavička Field of study: Sociology Thesis supervisor: Mgr. Tomáš Dvořák, PhD. Year of submission: 2023 Abstrakct: English Abstract: In this thesis, I examine political power in political sociology. The aims of this thesis are to identify the direction in which contemporary research on power is moving and to produce a synthesis of the knowledge that emerges from the study of power. To do this, I use an understanding of power through the lens of political sociology, which studies the manifestations of power in society and how power and society interact. In order to achieve the goals of this thesis, I first summarize all of the starting points that have emerged historically in the study of power. I then explored the perspectives of contemporary authors using qualitative methods, specifically semi-systematic sampling, which allowed me to select the sample for the study, and thematic analysis. I described what starting points contemporary authors use in their research, how they view historical starting points, and what new starting points are emerging in the study of power. The thesis then also forms a chronological overview of where the study of power has gone.
Is Czech society Eurosceptic? Analysis of the attitudes of the Czech population towards the EU
Hübscherová, Tereza ; Dvořák, Tomáš (advisor) ; Tuček, Milan (referee)
Diploma thesis Is Czech society Eurosceptic? Analysis of the attitudes of the Czech population towards the EU brings insight into the negative attitudes of the Czech society towards the European Union and European integration in a number of its dimensions. This is a cross-sectional quantitative research with the main intention to identify the dimensions of public Euroscepticism in Czech society through secondary data analysis, and subsequently clarify the role and influence of socio-demographic and socio-economic characteristics of society in the spheres. The thesis focuses on the sociology of European integration in connection with Euroscepticism, especially public, and brings insight into the development of its typologies. The results of the thesis represent the dimensions of negative attitudes towards the European Union that exist in Czech society. It is about democratic, economic, sovereign, social and Euroscepticism based on identity, while the influence of individual socio- demographic and socio-economic characteristics manifests itself in every form and, due to the detailed focus, in some cases in connection with the influence of personality factors on public Euroscepticism deviation from generally valid statements and new findings appear.
If a thousand populisms: current forms of transformation of party politics
Štrpková, Lea ; Císař, Ondřej (advisor) ; Dvořák, Tomáš (referee)
The aim of this thesis was to analyze populism in the context of transformations of Czech party politics and to find out to what extent populism is used in the process of political communication by Czech political parties and movements in their election programs. The subject of our research were those political entities that fulfilled the 5% condition of the electoral clause in the elections. Specifically, the answer to the question of how much populism is used in general was investigated, and a comparison of the levels in the four analyzed periods, namely in 2010, 2013, 2017 and 2021. Furthermore, it was determined whether this type of political communication is used only by populist actors, or it is also resorted to by political entities that are not generally considered to be populist. Electoral programs were examined using the method of computer-based content analysis, based on an a priori dictionary operationalizing populism into three dimensions: anti-elitism, people-centrism, and the Manichean dualistic view. The results of the analysis indicate the most widespread use of this type of communication during the early elections in 2013, since then the values have slightly decreased. All parties and movements use populism in their communication, significant differences in the frequency of their...
Optimizing Super Mario game tree search
Šosvald, David ; Gemrot, Jakub (advisor) ; Dvořák, Tomáš (referee)
Super Mario Bros. is still actively used as a model game for research in level genera- tion. Every year, the most recent techniques are applied and tested. This lately includes various deep learning and reinforcement learning methods. Many of the level generators use an artificial agent to test levels' playability or to gather playthrough metrics. There- fore, the performance of the level generators is undeniably tied to the performance of the artificial agent used, both in level validation and the computing time needed. In our previous work, we created a new state-of-the-art agent for Super Mario Bros. as a proof of concept when we implemented a more efficient forward model (world simu- lation) for the Mario AI framework. In this work, we continue in that work and focus on optimising how the agents explore the game tree by devising domain-specific heuristics and running extensive parameter searches to tune the agents as much as possible. Thanks to these improvements, a new state-of-the-art agent was created. This new agent should be capable of beating every standard Super Mario Bros. level and it requires less time to solve levels than previous agents. We also present a proof of concept agent that is capable of solving maze-like levels, which is something none of the previous agents was capable of.
Populist Trends in Republican Presidential Nomination Acceptance Speeches
Benson, Sophie ; Shavit, Anna (advisor) ; Dvořák, Tomáš (referee)
Bibliographic note BENSON, Sophie Elisabeth. Populist Trends in Republican Presidential Nomination Acceptance Speeches. Mater thesis. Charles University, Faculty of Social Sciences, Institute of Sociological Studies and Institute of Communication Studies and Journalism. Supervisor prof. Mgr. Anna Shavit, Ph.D. Abstract Populist rhetoric was quantified in all US Republican presidential nomination speeches between 1968 and 2020 utilizing Paul Taggat's model of Populism as an index to discern the viability of populist rhetoric as an effective campaign strategy in light of the shrinking core demographics of the Republican Party. The data found underscored the 2013 Growth and Opportunity Project conducted by the Republican National Convention (RNC) that the core demographics of the RNC were shrinking in electoral relevance and that the RNC was not persuasive with demographics that existed outside of their core constituency. This research showed that while populism is an everpresent phenomenon in RNC campaign rhetoric it is not sufficient in compensating for the depleting electoral strength that once guaranteed definitive electoral victories. Additionally, neither the degree of populism recorded in the speech nor in the audience response thereto correlates to the electoral outcomes. While populism is a powerful...
Vegan activism: Czech Republic and Thailand
Hlavová, Karla ; Císař, Ondřej (advisor) ; Dvořák, Tomáš (referee)
The diploma thesis analyse vegan activism in the Czech Republic and Thailand. The aim of the work was to investigate the methods and techniques used by vegan activists and the contextual elements influencing the movement. The work used the theoretical framework of comparative and contextual analysis. The first chapter of the thesis provided an overview of social movements and concepts for their study. The next chapter explained the data collection methods and ethical aspects. The empirical part analyzed the methods, actors and environment of vegan activism in both countries. The research questions focused on the analysis of strategies and tactics of organizations in the Czech Republic and Thailand to promote veganism, as well as on how local cultural factors influence the practice and acceptance of vegan activism, as well as on the main challenges and obstacles that the movement faces. The results showed that vegan organizations in both countries focus on online activism, but with slight differences in their strategies. Cultural factors such as tradition and religion influence the practice and acceptance of veganism in each country. Among the main obstacles to the promotion of veganism in the Czech Republic are conservative attitudes to food, a lack of activists, a negative perception of non-profit...
Correction of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy calibration models for changing ablation energies
Dvořák, Tomáš ; Vrábel, Jakub (referee) ; Képeš, Erik (advisor)
This bachelor thesis investigates transfer learning as a potential method for correcting calibration models based on multilayer perceptron neural networks in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy due to changes in ablation energies. MLP calibration models for four elements (chromium, nickel, molybdenum and manganese) and six different ablation energies (40, 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 mJ) were designed and trained. Models initially trained at an ablation energy of 50 mJ were then used to predict concentrations from spectra measured at the different ablation energies. Subsequent differences in the measurements were resolved by applying transfer learning. The results suggest that transfer learning could serve as a valid method for correcting inaccuracies due to differences in ablation energy, achieving comparable results to models trained from scratch in a fraction of the time and at significantly lower computational cost. However, this study could not clearly demonstrate consistent improvements in neural network performance using transfer learning in the context of LIBS. Likely contributing factors are the lack of optimization of the neural networks used, the limited complexity of the experimental dataset, or a combination of both. This research builds on and extends the literature and offers a deeper understanding of the capabilities and limitations of transfer learning in the context of LIBS.
Design and Implementation of Racing Computer Game
Dvořák, Tomáš ; Polášek, Tomáš (referee) ; Čadík, Martin (advisor)
The aim of this thesis is to create a racing game in order to revive this genre. The game is developed in Unity game engine and uses similar elements from other popular titles. However, it is most reminiscent of Trackmania. The player drives around in a course and tries to beat preset times. There are five ratings in total – none, bronze, silver, gold, platinum. The thesis does not only describe the implementation of said game, but it also contains the data gathered from testing and major changes made thanks to user responses.
