Storage conditions and protection of the collection of old prints in selected libraries of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University

This bachelor's thesis deals with the conditions of storage and handling of old prints and rare books published before 1860 in the holdings of the Jan Palach Library, the Department of Germanic Studies Library and the Historical Cabinet, sub-libraries of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University. It is written as a case study based on a combination of temperature and air humidity measurements and observations, mapping the current condition of shelves and racks, air pollution, lighting conditions, basic handling of books, and the protection of the collection. It also evaluates threats based on its findings. The obtained data showed that the conditions in these libraries are not suitable and require implementing specific changes proposed in the work. This bachelor's thesis deals with analyse of the library fund of annual reports in National pedagogical library and museum of J. A. Komenský in Prague. The teoretical part is pursuing about history of the library, current status, size and organization of the library fund. It also works with number of users and number of loans with the definition of basic terms as: library fund, analyse of library fund, methods of analysing the library fund and its application. The second part/ the empirical part/ deals/ is dealing/ with practical application of theoretical standards and information which have been found in the actual analyse of library fund, its annual reports and final evaluation of research results. Measuring the performance of academic libraries and the impact of the measuring on improving the quality of services Abstract The topic of the dissertation thesis is performance measurement in academic libraries. Measuring the performance of libraries is essential for their effective management, and it can also be used in the design and improvement of their processes and services. Statistics are the basis for measuring the performance of libraries. In the environment of university libraries, there was a need to revise the entire data collection process. The main goal of the dissertation was therefore to prepare a new annual report template for the Association of Libraries of Czech Universities, which would reflect the current needs of university libraries, and to propose a system of statistics for the collection of statistical data, which would take place in an online environment. A partial goal was to prepare a code of conduct for the system. The work is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. In the theoretical part, the issue of measuring library performance and its use in practice is presented, and existing quality standards and various research methods used to monitor library performance are described. Seniors and mobile apps - instant messaging

This thesis deals with the information behavior of seniors aged 65-80 in the context of smart devices and applications that enable instant messaging. The thesis consists of two parts: a theoretical part and an empirical part. The theoretical part generally focuses on seniors, the internet, instant messaging applications, information security, and education opportunities for seniors related to these topics. It includes a review of existing research and introduces statistical information from the Czech Republic and abroad. The results of my qualitative research study with seniors is presented in the empirical part. The research was conducted through interviews with seniors aged 65-80, both in the Czech Republic and abroad. Interviews were focused on the use of instant messaging applications. The main goal of the interviews was the investigation of application use by seniors, frequency and purpose of such use, positive and negative perceptions of these applications, as well as awareness of risks associated with their use. The influence of the coronavirus pandemic on application use was investigated as well.
Predatory publishing practices in the shadow of open access models

The thesis deals with the issue of the so-called predators in scientific communication from its beginnings to the present. Part of the work is the history, typology and methods of combating predatory publishing, as well as its influence and manifestations in different parts of the world. The thesis contains a quantitative research probe into the awareness of predatory publishing in the Czech Republic conducted using a questionnaire and exports of data from the personal bibliographic database of Charles University and the Register of Information on Results, in order to map the phenomenon of predatory publishing in the Czech environment.
The development of cataloging rules used in Germany, namely Prussian instructions and rules RAK

The aim of this work is to map the evolution of cataloguing rules on the territory of today's Federal Republic of Germany with more detailed description of Prussian Instructions and The rules for alphabetical cataloging (RAK). The introductory chapter disserts upon the general origin of the cataloguing rules in libraries. The second chapter offers a brief overview of german librarianship. The following chapter is devoted to particular personalities which played an important role in the beginning of german cataloguing practice. The next chapter describes the circumstances of the origination of Prussian Instructions, their structure and content. The fifth chapter describes the evolution of cataloguing rules for public libraries, which originated by simplification of Prussian Instructions, and their revisions. Also explained are the historical reasons for the creation of The rules for alphabetical cataloging (RAK), and their evolution. This chapter also includes a part devoted to the content of these rules. Following are the descriptions of efforts to harmonize german and anglo-american standards in the projects REUSE, RAK2, Changing for international formats and Codes (MARC21, AACR2). Tematem diplomové práce je mezinárodní spolupráce knihoven. V úvodní části se práce zaměřuje na historické aspekty. Zmiňuje tři hlavní mezníky, které ovlivnily povahu komunikace textové informace. Dále práce uvádí hlavní oblasti spolupráce knihoven mezi něž řadí spolupráci v oblasti standardizace, katalogizace, věcného pořádání, sdílení dat a sdílení dokumentů. Podrobně se věnuje vzniku a vývoji nejvýznamnějších mezinárodních organizací, které se zaměřují na sféru informací a knihovnictví. Probrány jsou organizace IFLA, FID, OCLC a UNESCO. Závěrečná část probírá vybrané mezinárodní programy podporované Evropskou unií zaměřené na činnost veřejných knihoven, kterých se účastnila také Česká republika zastoupená Národní knihovnou ČR. Jsou jimi Publica (NK ČR se neúčastnila), PULMAN, CALIMERA a TEL-MEMOR.
Digital libraries of Czech county libraries

This diploma thesis is devoted to digital libraries of Czech regional libraries. Based on the available sources of literature and the questionnaire survey, the individual digital libraries that are built and administered by regional libraries are presented. In the first chapters of the thesis there is a terminological overview, the process of digitization itself and the digitization workflow. This is followed by a description of the distribution of personal representation of individual positions in digital libraries as well as the standards of digital libraries. An important part of the thesis is devoted to the results of the questionnaire survey among individual regional libraries and the presentation of the results of this survey. The Place of the Library within the Organisational Framework of Universities in the Czech Republic and USA: A Comparison Study

The aim of this master thesis was to describe and asses the place of the library within the organizational framework of universities in the Czech Republic and USA. Aim of this thesis is to describe and evaluate the current position of library in organizational structure of colleges and universities in the Czech Republic and USA. First chapter sums up the current situation. For Czech universities in public school sector the corresponding elementary data, relevant legislative scope and position in organizational structure of public universities are emphasized and presented. For US universities the current status is presented with a particular example of five public universities. Second chapter is about current trends in evolution of university libraries in Czech Republic and USA with an emphasis on position in university or college structure. Third chapter is the essential part of the thesis. It contains report about survey performed with representatives of Czech public universities and representatives of given libraries. Last chapter presents parallel research done in USA.
The tools for building the collection in the Municipal Library of Prague

The goal of this bachelor thesis is to introduce tools, practices, and agendas used to build the library collection of the Municipal Library of Prague (further also MLP) and their relations. The thesis consists of six chapters and appendices. It includes the explanation of some internal terms used only in MLP. Later, the characterization and a brief history of the Municipal Library of Prague are exposed. The thesis also describes the processes taking place in the departments of acquisitions and library collections maintenance (purchase, resupply, displacement). More attention is given to the so-called attractive collection, its characterization, purchase, displacement, and lending, and selected sample of the attractive collection is used to show the function of the tools to build the collection. The thesis concludes with the possibilities of innovations in the field of building the collections in the Municipal Library of Prague.
