Geopolitics of Border Hardening: Protecting Statehood through Re-territorialisation
Mičko, Branislav ; Romancov, Michael (advisor) ; Doboš, Bohumil (referee) ; Lepič, Martin (referee)
The presented dissertation seeks to answer why states construct barriers on their borders. In order to provide an answer, a new theoretical approach is proposed based on re-reading the works of Carl Schmitt. The offered theory builds upon existing scholarship and is centred around the concept of nomos, defined as a political order consisting of a performative way of life and land division that is underlying the political existence of states. The basic argument advanced here is that border barriers are constructed against hard-to-identify strangers to this order. Seven case studies are offered where the process of barrier construction is tracked back- to-back with various developments pertaining to the identified nomos. The results confirm the existence of hard-to-identify strangers challenging the respective nomos in different ways and their role in the process leading to the barrier construction. For the study of border barriers, this implies the importance of the issue of strangeness and identification in predicting barrier construction. The work also demonstrates nomos' potential usefulness as an analytic prism for geopolitical research.
Impact of Portugal on the European Union Training Mission in Mozambique
Snopko, Leonard ; Doboš, Bohumil (advisor) ; Kofroň, Jan (referee)
The thesis deals with the European Union Military Training Mission (EUTM) in Mozambique, which has been operational since 2021. The EU built on the foundations of the Portuguese training mission, which started training a few months earlier. Portugal, in particular, is a long- standing partner of its former colony on the African continent, with which it has regularly updated its bilateral Defence Cooperation Framework Programme - 'Programa-Quadro' - since the Carnation Revolution. In response to the insurgency by the militant group Ansar al- Sunna wa Jama'a (ASWJ) in Mozambique's northern region, Cabo Delgado, in October 2017, Portugal explored adding a new sixth cooperation Project with Mozambique to their Framework Programme. It was to support the training and capacity-building of the Mozambique Defence Armed Forces (FADM) for counter-insurgency operations. The formalisation of this project took place in Lisbon in May 2021 with the signing of a new 'Programa-Quadro' by both the Portuguese and Mozambican Ministers of National Defence. Simultaneously, Portuguese officials took the opportunity of the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2021 to discuss the implementation of the EUTM Mozambique. It was to build on the Portuguese training mission to strengthen the FADM capabilities...

Against the backdrop of the evolving EU space strategy for security and defence, the research contemplates the centralisation of space matters within a singular, specialized EU body. In the broader context, the study underscores the urgency for international regulations to navigate the burgeoning complexities of space technology advancements and to safeguard against the threats of space weaponization. As the EU navigates unexplored space areas, the combination of quantum innovation, strategic coherence, and international cooperation emerges as crucial in guiding the EU towards a strong...
Emerging Threats to Space Security and Protection of Space Assets
Pražák, Jakub ; Doboš, Bohumil (advisor) ; Střítecký, Vít (referee) ; Hays, Peter Lang (referee)
The dissertation entitled "Emerging Threats to Space Security and Protection of Space Assets" introduces outer space as an important strategic domain with undisputable significance for the present and future of humankind. Despite the specific features of space environment, it explains that the outer space domain is not entirely divergent from traditional terrestrial domains and space-provided services are part of everyday life. The dissertation discusses and analyses the threats to space security and proposes countermeasures to mitigate the negative consequences on the space environment and for human activities beyond the borders of Earth, contributing to the spacepower theory and shaping the approach to outer space as an economic and political area. The dissertation illustrates the complexity of space threats and urges they be resolved. The theoretical framework is based on realist assumptions; however, it broadly acknowledges the different roles of various space stakeholders, resulting in an eclectic approach to space relations. Accordingly, the dissertation elaborates on dynamics and interconnections between space actors and outlines the prospects for future cooperation that is vital for preserving the space environment.

The expansion of ISWAP in the Lake Chad Basin
Biolcati, Camilla ; Doboš, Bohumil (advisor) ; Kocmanová, Markéta (referee)
The research examines the birth and evolution of the Islamic State West Africa Province. Originating as a splinter group of Boko Haram, ISWAP was soon able to establish itself as a predominant force in the Lake Chad Basin region. This research aims to identify and analyse the factors that have enabled this rapid expansion and growth. By first reviewing the literature on the concepts of insurgency, salafism and salafi-jihadism, it aims to contextualise ISWAP as an example of a recurring pattern of violence in the Nigerian context, the country where it originated, due to a mix of social, economic, political, and religious factors. Subsequently, the origins of the group will be explored by understanding the reasons for its split with Boko Haram and through its links with the Islamic State, of which ISWAP is currently the main affiliate. Through an examination of the main characteristics, the emergence of ISWAP will be presented through the theoretical lens of the population-centric approach. ISWAP's insurgency represents a particular case in point for its ability to have adopted an approach aimed at gaining the support of the local population. This effort proved to be the most influential factor in its expansion and strength. ISWAP has developed a population-centric model, capable of providing...

The Argentine-Brazilian bilateral nuclear verification protocol in the light of trust-building cooperation theory
Argüello, Facundo ; Parízek, Michal (advisor) ; Doboš, Bohumil (referee)
The Argentine-Brazilian bilateral nuclear verification protocol in the light of trust-building cooperation theory Argüello, 2023 Abstract This work aims to identify the reasons for ABACC's continued success in securing a strong reception by Argentina, Brazil, and the NSG, and well as predict the impact of Brazil signing the IAEAAdditional Protocol in its search for a nuclear submarine as part of the PROSUB. The thesis analyzes ABACC from a neo-institutionalist theoretical framework of Regime Theory, cooperation patterns, Rational Design, and studies on International Organization centralization, independence, and enforcement problems. The work concludes that ABACC is successful because, firstly, its credibility and reputation are convenient for both state members, which share similar gains of prestige from the institution's success. This is because the agency has encompassed the interests of both. Secondly, ABACC is the work of a careful institutional design that rests on centralization, independence, high-quality of information, and strictly enforced bilateral symmetry between Argentina and Brazil. Regarding the impact of Brazil's nuclear submarine project, it can be said that it threatens ABACC's success because it changes the interests of Brazil, which are no longer encompassed by the Agency. This means...
