Simple past tenses in Mark's gospel in Old Czech biblical translations
Bendová, Klára ; Dittmann, Robert (advisor) ; Rejzek, Jiří (referee)
The present study focuses on the use and retreat of simple past tenses in representatives of all versions of the Old Czech Bible translation, using the material of the first eight chapters of the Gospel of Mark, accompanied by selected pericopes from chapters 9-16, obtained by manual excerption. The study draws on the current secondary literature, which has recently focused on the transformations of the temporal system of Old Czech in various genres (J. Zdeňková) and in partial probes specifically in the biblical text proper (J. Kyseláková, H. Kreisingerová, K. Voleková). Hypotheses formulated on the basis of the secondary literature were examined using the functions of the Microsoft Excel, statistical calculators at www.socscistatistics.com and the programme R.
The Czech Language of the Weekly Našinec in 1988
Zittová, Klára ; Dittmann, Robert (advisor) ; Bozděchová, Ivana (referee)
This thesis aims to characterize selected features of the Czech language used in the Czech-American weekly Našinec. The material basis consists of scans of ten issues from 1988. The opening chapters (1) focus on Czech emigration to the USA, specifically on the development of the Texas community and Texas Czech language, and are followed by a description of Czech-American press and its language in the second half of the twentieth century. The next part (2) describes the Našinec and its language in the linguistic research to date and then (3) details are given about the sample chosen for further analysis and criteria of selection of features chosen for the analysis (4). The main part (5-7) of the present BA thesis includes quantitative research into three phenomena which are well documented in the sample and at the same time seem to differ from the situation in the contemporary Czech language. These phenomena are: competition of the prepositions k/ke/ku, the infinitive ending and forms of the third person singular present tense of the verb být "to be". The state of affairs detected in Našinec was compared to the period linguistic manuals, studies and relevant language corpora. Generally the comparison confirmed differences from the situation in the contemporary Czech language and retention or even...

Third-Person Preterite Auxiliary in the Gospel according to Mark in Older Czech Bibles
Hedvíková, Marie ; Dittmann, Robert (advisor) ; Andrlová Fidlerová, Alena (referee)
This bachelor thesis examines disappearance of the third-person auxiliary in the compound preterite. The phenomenon chosen was studied in the text of the Gospel of Mark in older Czech Bibles. We intended to build on the previous research of auxiliary distribution - especially in the studies authored by S. Dickey, R. Dittmann, J. Filipová, and J. Zdeňková. We traced the gradual loss of the auxiliary in ten different biblical translations. Our material includes the Old Czech Evangeliary, representatives of all four Old Czech Bible redactions (beginning with the Dresden Bible), and selected printed Bibles up to the Six- Volume Kralice Bible. We manually excerpted all the instances of the compound preterite from the sources. Subsequently, each token was annotated with respect to the presence of the auxiliary, grammatical categories of number and aspect, and the presence of the subject. Then we analyzed the data obtained with the help of the functions of the Microsoft Excel (version 2303), statistical calculators available at www.socscistatistics.com, and the R software. We compared the basic statistics results with previous research, we formulated new hypotheses and possible starting points for further research.

Vajdlová, Miloslava ; Dittmann, Robert (advisor) ; Pleskalová, Jana (referee) ; Komárek, Karel (referee)
The present work deals with the process of forming a new, non-stem declension type píseň (song) in historical Czech and with its formation and further development from the Old Czech period over the humanist and baroque time, the period of the national revival and the post- revival era up to the beginning of the 20th century. It dwells on determination of causes of the origins of this declension type, the time when the new declension constitutes approximately, on the characterization of the subsequent development of the new declension type and its division into periods. It also determines factors influencing the declension stability or instability of names affected by the process of forming the new type. The thesis also includes description and analysis of long-term historical development of individual groups of nouns, which are involved in the formation of the new declension type. Last but not least, it submits an overview whether and how selected historical period grammars and grammar handbooks (from the humanist and baroque period) reflect the new declension type.
