Gay fatherhood. Expression of Activism in the Czech Context?

This thesis elaborates on the concept of gay fatherhood, which has been so far insufficiently researched and discussed phenomenon, especially in the Czech Republic. The thesis explores attitudes of interviewed gay men towards questions of gay fatherhood. In-depth semi-structural interviews with 30 gay men investigated in what ways the matters of gay fatherhood are constructed in the Czech context; where and how the conceptions about gay fatherhood emerge and how they are maintained and/or transformed. In general, an important factor affecting one's desire to have children is prevailing institutional context. Institutional barriers and obstacles to having children that are systematically constructed by society, affect not only the mainstream population, but also (and above all) gay population. Therefore, building on review of relevant academic texts, the thesis focuses on a comparison of the Czech institutional context with the Scandinavian and Spanish one. Comparison of different models of enforcement of legislation concerning same-sex partnerships reveals key factors that enable institucionalization of same-sex partnerships/families.
