Trust in media: an analysis of the determinants of perceived media credibility

This diploma thesis "Důvěra v média: analýza determinantů vnímané důvěryhodnosti médií" deals with the issue of trust in the media among the population aged 20-30. This age group is defined based on developmental psychology as young or early adulthood. The diploma thesis asks how members of the selected target group trust the given media and what this perceived trustworthiness is conditioned by. The diploma thesis is divided into a theoretical and an analytical part. In its introduction, the theoretical part deals with the central topic of this diploma thesis, which is trust in the media. There is also focus on a interdisciplinary links (trust studies), approaches to research on trust in the media, characteristics and results of trust research in the Czech Republic. It also deals with the definition of the concept of trust, its functions in society and its concept in various fields such as sociology, political science, psychology and anthropology. At the end, the theoretical part offers the necessary anchoring of the topic from the point of view of media theory by means of the definition of the function and effects of the media on society and the dual broadcasting system. International Organization of Journalists (1946-1995)

The rigorous thesis: "International Organization of Journalists (1946-1995)" deals with the history, development, aims and activities of the International Organization of Journalists (hereinafter IOJ) in the period from 1946 to 1995, thus since its creation in the year 1946 to the year 1995, when the last Congress IOJ in Jordanian Amman was held. The introductory part of the text is focused on a brief resumption of three most important international journalists' organizations, which were established before the year 1946 - the International Congress of Journalists, the International Federation of Journalists and the International Federation of Journalists from Allied and Free Countries. In the second chapter are first summarized history of IOJ and described main phases of IOJ's development - these are periodizated according to IOJ's Congresses. An integral part of the description and periodization is quotation of main international and Czechoslovak political circumstances, which had a real impact on the organization. The next text is followed by IOJ's objectives, aims, activities and structure. Finally, the IOJ's main persons and the curriculum vitae of the five leaders are mentioned. Analysis of the Sunday Columns of České Slovo and Venkov in Selected Years

The diploma thesis Analysis of the Sunday Columns of České Slovo and Venkov in Selected Years is devoted to the analysis of sunday supplements and columns of the daily newspapers České slovo and Venkov in 1933 and 1943. The aim of the thesis was to find out what these supplements and columns looked like, what topics they dealt with, what their character was and how they changed in the selected time horizon and historical context. A content analysis of the sunday newspaper columns and supplements was used to determine what these columns looked like, what their structure was, and what topics they covered. The analysis itself always included the first sunday edition of each month from 1933 and 1943. The analysis also showed that the sunday columns and supplements of both newspapers had an entertainment function and provided readers with mainly relaxing reading in the form of fiction and interest or popular science columns. In addition, it was found that these sunday columns were also largely aimed at women and children, to whom separate supplements and columns were devoted. The diploma thesis also explains how the different political focus of the two newspapers was reflected in these sunday supplements and how this content were affected by propaganda during the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia.

Elements of Propaganda in the Image of the Chernobyl Disaster in Czechoslovak Press

On 26 April 1986, the worst nuclear accident in human history took place at Chernobyl in Ukraine. In addition to the massive loss of human lifes (it is estimated that hundreds of thousands of people died indirectly as a result of radiation), the accident had devastating effects on nature far and wide. In the first part of my thesis, I use literature to describe the reality of how the accident actually occurred and what its consequences were. Then, through an analysis of articles in the Czechoslovak press of the time (Rudé právo - the central daily of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia; Týdeník aktualit - published in Czechoslovakia by the Soviet Novosti Press Agency), I present a comprehensive picture of how the Chernobyl accident was presented to Czechoslovak readers in comparison with reality. The depiction of the accident is also examined in contemporary Czechoslovak television coverage. In order to compare the depiction of the accident in the West, I further analyze articles in The New York Times. Part of the thesis also focuses on an examination of the archival holdings of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia to refute or confirm the hypothesis that there is evidence of instructions to journalists on how they should write about the crash.

Media image of Pinochet's regime in foreign newspapers

This thesis focuses on the different media images of Chile in foreign newspapers in 1973, 1988 and 1990. Specifically, it focuses on the New York Times in the USA, The Guardian in England and ABC in Spain, which had different views of the Pinochet regime and its development. The thesis focuses on all references to Chile during the two-week period at all key moments in the history of the Pinochet regime and compares each newspaper's view of these events. The aim of this thesis is to compare and analyse the different media portrayals of Chile in foreign newspapers and to examine the relationship of each newspaper to the Pinochet regime. The theoretical part deals with Chile's historical context of its economic and political development as well as an introduction to its two most influential political figures of the second half of the 20th century. It also presents the economic and political relationship between Chile and the three countries from which the diaries under study originated. In the practical part, I will focus on the three most important periods in the most significant moments of the Pinochet regime, his seizure of power, the first plebiscite and the final handover of the presidency.

Audio Drama in Czech Radio: From Radio Plays to Radio Drama Podcasts

This master thesis traces the development of radio plays and other drama works produced by Czech (Czechoslovak) Radio. First, it presents the development in this field from its beginnings about a hundred years ago to the present day. In the practical part (mainly due to the lack of material from earlier times) it then focuses on radio production from the 1960s onwards. The research focuses on whether and how drama radio production reflects the social and socio- political issues of the time period. This thesis uses particular radio plays and other works to show how they reflected these themes or how they constructed them in their own way depending on the time period. The qualitative analysis examined 22 original radio plays, 6 episodes of 1 radio series, and 3 episodes of 1 drama podcast. The theoretical basis for the research is provided by chapters on social construction of reality, the representation of reality in media, and a summary of Miloslav Petrusek's reflections on the sociology of literature, which we apply to the field of radio drama.

The media image of the Spanish flu in selected periodicals in the years 1918 - 1920

The topic of this diploma thesis is the way how the media described the Spanish flu in selected historical press in the years 1918-1920. The main method used is a quantitative content analysis, which enables the examination of a larger volume of data. Quantitative content analysis is performed on articles from the Czech-language newspaper Lidové noviny and from the American newspaper The Sun. In terms of timeframe, the research is limited to the years 1918-1920, i.e. the period when the Spanish flu epidemic took place. Attention is paid to the way in which the Spanish flu was reported in the selected newspapers, for example the frequency of publishing news about the disease, the main topics of the articles, how often articles about the disease made it to the front pages, or whether the disease is presented as fatal. Subsequently, part of the work is devoted to the qualitative analysis of articles from professional medical journals. Two articles are from 1918, another two articles are from 2018 and 2019. In this case, using qualitative analysis, the different views of doctors on the Spanish flu are analyzed, from 1918 - when the epidemic broke out, and a hundred years later. The main tool to find out the media image will be a combination of quantitative and qualitative content analysis. The thesis first anchors the theoretical concepts of social construction of reality, agenda setting and media image. It then introduces the Czech media scene and the media in which the media image will be examined, i.e. Lidovky.cz and Novinky.cz. The media image of the Carnation Revolution in the Czechoslovak period press

This bachelor thesis is focused on an analysis of the Portuguese Carnation Revolution that took place on April 15, 1974 and its media image in the Czechoslovak press of that time. The Carnation Revolution was a non-violent military coup that overthrew the long-term dictatorial Estado Novo regime and started the process of democratization. This process faced many challenges, it took two years to form a democratically elected parliament that approved the constitution of the newly formed Portuguese Republic. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to compare the interpretation of the Carnation Revolution and its key moments, that threatened the democratization process, in the Czechoslovak newspaper Rudé právo with historical sources to determine whether the official party press of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia deviated from them in order to glorify the Portuguese Communist Party and their actions in the Provisional Government.
