The Writer and Her Critics. Czech Reflections of J. K. Rowling's Tweets about Trans People
Kolaříková, Marie ; Andrlová Fidlerová, Alena (advisor) ; Adam, Robert (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on the presentation of the conflict between the writer J.K. Rowling and her critics on five of the most widely read Czech online news portals, namely Novinky.cz, Lidovky.cz, Aktualne.cz, Echo24.cz, and iDNES.cz. The thesis examines the textual strategies used to communicate about trans individuals and the controversy surrounding them. The thesis employs methods derived from ethnomethodology, specifically Membership Categorization Analysis (MCA) and Media Dialogical Network (MDN). Using the MCA method, it was found that by categorizing the writer and her critics into collections of membership categories, a certain image of the situation was conveyed. The controversy was portrayed as interpersonal drama among celebrities, damage to J.K. Rowling's career, cancel culture, injecting politics into the apolitical sphere of art and culture, but only rarely as the struggle of trans people for their rights. In the analysis of texts using the MDN method, it was found that the portals, in developing the dialogic network, focus primarily on how the specific case harmed the life and career of Rowling and other artists. In the news, trans people were thus pushed into the background, with their lives and rights being only minimally addressed. Trans people in the texts become mere...
The Image of Jan Hus in the Early Modern Czech Literature
Hejdová, Tereza ; Andrlová Fidlerová, Alena (advisor) ; Škarpová, Marie (referee)
The work The Image of Jan Hus in the Early Modern Czech Literature tries to map different ways of description of this Czech preacher in selected literary texts from 15th to 18th century, to capture the changes which his image underwent. The chosen authors come from different countries and use different languages, represent different environments, social classes and opinion groups, they also have different education and religion. Individual literary works were assessedby means of comparing the key episodes that are either repeated in the texts, or the author intentionally did not use them. To understand the image of Jan Hus as a whole, also contemporary iconography was taken into account , which in some cases has been taken from other literary texts than those which were compared, so that the image of Hus whereas complete as possible. The comparison of the texts and iconography showed, how accurate the observation of the described scheme was and how the image of Jan Hus was gradually changing. The combination of written and iconographic material from specific time intervals allowed us to observe the gradual change of conceptions of the personality of Jan Hus and events connected with him, because the authors represent the opinion of their ethnic group and time. The image of Jan Hus is therefore very...
Third-Person Preterite Auxiliary in the Gospel according to Mark in Older Czech Bibles
Hedvíková, Marie ; Dittmann, Robert (advisor) ; Andrlová Fidlerová, Alena (referee)
This bachelor thesis examines disappearance of the third-person auxiliary in the compound preterite. The phenomenon chosen was studied in the text of the Gospel of Mark in older Czech Bibles. We intended to build on the previous research of auxiliary distribution - especially in the studies authored by S. Dickey, R. Dittmann, J. Filipová, and J. Zdeňková. We traced the gradual loss of the auxiliary in ten different biblical translations. Our material includes the Old Czech Evangeliary, representatives of all four Old Czech Bible redactions (beginning with the Dresden Bible), and selected printed Bibles up to the Six- Volume Kralice Bible. We manually excerpted all the instances of the compound preterite from the sources. Subsequently, each token was annotated with respect to the presence of the auxiliary, grammatical categories of number and aspect, and the presence of the subject. Then we analyzed the data obtained with the help of the functions of the Microsoft Excel (version 2303), statistical calculators available at www.socscistatistics.com, and the R software. We compared the basic statistics results with previous research, we formulated new hypotheses and possible starting points for further research.

Jiránková, Petra ; Sherman, Tamah (advisor) ; Andrlová Fidlerová, Alena (referee)
The thesis deals with how the media portray groups of foreigners affected by the Russian- Ukrainian war beginning in February 2022, and how foreigners are seen by participants in Czech-language Internet discussions. The theoretical section introduces the media, their functions and influence on the audience, as well as the background of the war in Ukraine and groups of foreigners who are affected by the conflict and who are also the most frequently mentioned in the selected articles. These are primarily Ukrainians and Russians, as well as Africans and Arabs. It also deals with the issue of stereotypes and prejudice, including ethnic ones. Finally, it presents a description of the procedure for analyzing articles and comments, and at the same time provides theoretical starting points for the practical section. In the practical section, 9 articles from three internet news servers are analyzed, specifically from Aktuálně.cz, iDNES.cz and Novinky.cz. The analysis of the articles focuses on their content, the actors in the text, the conversation analysis, the ethnocentric approach, the "foreignness" of foreigners and the factors that led to the creation of the...
Prose adaptations of J. K. Tyl's dramas by V. Kovářík
Sedláčková, Barbora ; Martínek, František (advisor) ; Andrlová Fidlerová, Alena (referee)
The bachelor's thesis deals with prose adaptations of Josef Kajetán Tyl's dramas Jiříkovo vidění a jiné příběhy (publisher Albatros, 1973 and 1978) by Vladimír Kovářík which are intended for children. It compares the short-story adaptation of the play Strakonický dudák and the original play edited by A. Jedlička (In: Dramatické báchorky, publisher SNKLHU, 1953). The thesis analyzes certain types of changes between the text of drama and prose that the adapter made in order to adapt the storyline to the form of a short story: more detailed descriptions, less dialogization, reduction of the number of utterances and slight changes in the order of the different parts of the story. The thesis also focuses on the linguistic changes that were made in order to update the text and make it more accessible for a new reader model - children, i.e. changes in vocabulary (simplification of formulations), word order and morphological changes. 1
