Širůčková, Magdaléna ; Šuman, Záviš (advisor) ; Jaluška, Matouš (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the topos of disguise in Tristan legends of the 12th and 13th centuries. The main aim is the analysis and interpretation of five disguises: the leprous, the fool, the pilgrim, the minstrel and the monk. The work is based on primary French and German texts from Béroul to Eilhart of Oberg. The analysis relying on seven different versions of the legend allow us to glimpse the phenomenon of disguise in all its richness. The bachelor thesis summarizes the general form of the disguise and the role it plays within the Tristanian myth. It also illuminates the extent to which the mask serves to fulfil Tristan's intentions and what those intentions actually are.
History or Fiction? The Question of Hybrid Literature: Laurent Binet's Novel HHhH
Soukup, Jan ; Šuman, Záviš (referee)
The diploma thesis concerns the questions of hybrid literature, especially the novel HHhH by Laurent Binet. Even though history and fiction can impact and enrich each other, their relationship is quite problematic. Therefore philosophers, historians and literary critics are trying to answer the questions of how to write (about) history. Laurent Binet tackles this in his novel HHhH, in which two storylines keep alternating. In the first one narrator constantly addresses the reader, expressing his doubts if it is even possible to give a faithful account of an historical event. In the second storyline he portrays the events that led to the assassination of deputy Reich Protector of the Bohemia and Moravia Reinhard Heydrich. The goal of the thesis is to analyse the relationship between history and fiction, as this relationship has during the 20th century undergone rapid changes, which are also apparent in the analysed text. The thesis is divided in two parts. The first, which serves as a theoretical base for the subsequent analysis of HHhH, depicts the historiographical approaches, which have changed and evolved significantly in the 20th century. The second part tracks the reflections of the particular historiographical approaches in HHhH and examines, which conclusions has the author reached in his...

To Be Marginalized in Morocco - the Representation of Otherness, Sexual Taboos and the Corporality in Abdellah Taia's Novels
Jalovičiar, Matúš ; Voldřichová - Beránková, Eva (advisor) ; Šuman, Záviš (referee)
This master's thesis focuses on the depiction of marginalised groups in selected novels by the contemporary Moroccan writer and director Abdellah Taïa. The author, currently residing in Paris, is himself a homosexual, a Muslim, and a novelist, and in his works, he reveals a hidden and taboo image of Moroccan society. This work aims to describe and analyse the position of marginalised citizens not only in Taïa's novels but also in official government documents. Through autofiction and what is known as the aesthetics of corporeality, Taïa lays bare taboo topics and gives voice to those who, for various reasons, remain silent. The thesis seeks to answer the following questions: how does the author depict corporeality and marginalised groups of citizens? What role does corporeality occupy in Muslim society, and what taboos are associated with it? How does Taïa stylize his protagonist, what are his distinct features, and how does corporeality influence the author's writing style? Key words: Maghrebian literature, Francophone literatures, Africa, marginalisation, sexual taboo, corporeality
The World "Down There" Portrayal of the Working Class in A Man's Place by Annie Ernaux and Returning to Reims by Didier Eribon
Strand, Matylda ; Voldřichová - Beránková, Eva (advisor) ; Šuman, Záviš (referee)
The thesis analyses the portrayal of the working class in two texts: A Man's Place by Annie Ernaux and Returning to Reims by Didier Eribon. Both texts draw heavily on the thought of the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, and the thesis thus summarises concepts central to the interpretation of the selected works. Given its position at the intersection of literature and sociology, one chapter is devoted to the question of genre as an indicator of the possible modes of reading. Both texts aim to describe a collective, a social class, but Eribon and Ernaux each choose a radically different literary strategy. Through this personal journey, the narrators attempt to restate the image of the social class from which they originate. The description of the working class is not reduced to economic differences as sociocultural differences are emphasized. The themes raised by the texts extend well beyond the literary field: the description of the marginalized subject is deemed a political act.
Galanterie in Pierre Corneille's early Plays
Vendlová, Johana ; Šuman, Záviš (advisor) ; Pohorský, Aleš (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with gallantry in selected early plays of Pierre Corneille's comic genre. The aim of the thesis is to reveal gallant components in the given plays, to approach the circumstances of their involvement in dramaturgy and to describe their influence on comedy. The first part is devoted to the conceptualization of gallantry as a sociocultural and a literary category, considering its origin and influences from the Middle Ages to the seventeenth century. The description of these influences is necessary to understand the semantic permeability of this category, which gained many meanings during its development and reached their opposition, which significantly influences the gallant doctrine of classicist society, and thus the Corneille's audience. The second part analyzes concrete gallant components in selected comedies, whose corpus is divided into two parts: comedy of the thirties, Mélite and La Veuve, and comedy of the forties, Le Menteur and La Suite du Menteur. Each unit is achieved by a discussion summarizing the most important characteristics of the poet's style, the use of gallantry and the comedy of the decade, which allows them to be compared with each other. The focus is particularly on the development of the poet's style regarding the perspective of contemporary...
Dramaturgical and Aesthetical Development of Deux ex Machine in Selected Works by Pierre Corneille and Jean Racine
Balucha, Martin ; Šuman, Záviš (advisor) ; Voldřichová - Beránková, Eva (referee)
The present study focuses on a theatrical principle known as a Latin calque Deus ex machina meaning "God from the Machine". Although this plot device used to resolve a seemingly unsolvable problem is already mentioned in the Aristotle's Poetics, its application and understanding keeps developing. Moreover, the status of Deus ex machina among other theatrical constraints changes as well. The aim of this M.A thesis is to describe the evolution of this particular theatrical device in terms of aesthetics and dramaturgy of the 17th Century French Tragedy. The first part of the study is dedicated to a theoretical analysis of Deus ex machina. Therefore, we introduce the opinions of three French classicist theorists, namely Jean Chapelain, abbé d'Aubignac and Hippolyte-Jules Pilet de La Mesnardière. In each of these theoretical works the theatrical device is analysed in the context of individual dramaturgical doctrines as well as in a close correlation with other theatrical rules. In the second part of the work we study the practical integration of Deus ex machina in six selected tragedies dealing with the legends on Iphigenia and Medea. In the entire work Deus ex machina is described mainly in the context of other "irrational" elements of the plot as they represent an inevitable part of a tragic action. Powered by...

The study entitled : La Dramaturgie de Pierre Corneille dans Médée, is concerned with the issue of baroque and classicist aesthetics in Pierre Corneille's drama, Médée. The aim of the present thesis is to consider the nature of Corneille's version of Médée. And thus not only in the context of ancient and contemporary literary critique, but also in the framework of the influence of already mentioned aesthetics. Respecting this intention, the study is divided into following chapters : 1. Introduction, 2. Drama at the interface of two aesthetics, 3. Drama created to be seen an heard, 4. Among a countless number of rules. 5. Conclusion. In chapter 2, the present study sketches a brief draft of the seventeenth century dramatic production. Consecutively it deals with the issue of baroque aesthetics and presents the conceptualization of Jean Rousset, Bruce Morissette and Raymond Lebègue. The subject of the chapter 3, arising from Raymond Lebègue's conceptualization of baroque aesthetics, deals with the representation of both death and violence on stage. Lebegue's conception was applied to concerned passages in Médée - namely Creon's suicide, murder of Créuse, Médée's infanticide and the suicide of Jason. Chapter 4 is a recapitulation of the attitude of Greek, Roman and classicist writers, as well as the one of...
