Essays on the Microeconomics of Banking
Dvořák, Pavel ; Hanousek, Jan (advisor) ; Čihák, Martin (referee) ; Kraft, Evan (referee)
Essays on the Microeconomics of Banking - Dissertation Abstract The thesis consists of four chapters and is primarily a contribution to the literature on the microeconomics of banking. The first chapter focuses on alternative explanations of the apparent vast international differences in retail bank fees between countries on different levels of economic development. Apart from the usual form of asymmetric information between the bank and its borrowers (i.e. the assumption that the bank cannot observe the borrower's type), the additional assumption is that the borrowers themselves can have false perceptions about their quality. It is shown that the higher is the degree of the borrower's misperceptions about their skills the higher fees should be expected. In an alternative setup it is shown that comparable results can be received when banks possess imperfect testing technology (this assumption replaces the assumption about the borrower's false perceptions). Moreover, simulations using both setups also imply that under realistic conditions increasing wealth inequality in a country (measured by a Gini index) leads to higher fees. The second chapter focuses on the effects of inter-bank information sharing on the degree of competition in the banking industry. Information sharing is shown to be an effective...
Alzheimer's Disease Profile in the UDS Neuropsychological Battery
Čihák, Martin ; Nikolai, Tomáš (advisor) ; Děchtěrenko, Filip (referee)
Background: Neuropsychological assessment plays a key role in cognitive impairment diagnosis. Moreover, determining the cognitive profile can help to uncover the aetiology of the impairment. Previous studies found that memory impairment is especially typical for Alzheimer's disease. In UDS 2, one of most common neuropsychological batteries, this is manifested by a low score in Logical Memory test. Aims: To describe a profile of early cognitive deficit in Alzheimer disease using the UDS 2 battery in comparison with deficits of other aetiologies and to assess the ability of UDS 2 to distinguish Alzheimer's disease from other causes of cognitive deficit. Methods: 190 patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment underwent an assessment of Alzheimer's disease biomarkers, UDS 2 battery and other neuropsychological tests. The probability of suffering from Alzheimer's disease was modelled with the use of binominal regression on the neuropsychological assessment results. Results: Using UDS 2 battery, Alzheimer's disease patients can be best discriminated from patients with otherwise caused cognitive deficit with the test of episodic memory (delayed recall score in Logical Memory test). Other tests significantly improved the accuracy of the estimate of probability of suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Therefore,...
Essays on Interest Rates and Credit Risk
Vojtek, Martin ; Kočenda, Evžen (advisor) ; Palda, Filip (referee) ; Čihák, Martin (referee)
This dissertation addresses inefficiencies and problems in the financial markets of post-transition countries, which denies the use of standard estimation techniques. It focuses on interest rate markets and empirically analyzes the situation in the countries that joined the EU in May 2004. These countries underwent significant changes over the last two decades and markets in these countries are often not stable and not developed. In my dissertation I am conducting research in the areas where the empirical results are very scarce. A deeper understanding of the specifics in the markets of post-transition countries can be very helpful for example in designing policy measures touching these markets.
Three Essays on Financial Development
Mareš, Jan ; Horváth, Roman (advisor) ; Belke, Ansgar (referee) ; Čihák, Martin (referee) ; Geršl, Adam (referee)
The dissertation is a compilation of three empirical papers on the effects of financial development. In the first paper, we examine finance's effect on long-term economic growth using Bayesian model averaging to address model uncertainty. Our global sample findings indicate that the efficiency of financial intermediation is robustly related to long-term growth. The second and third papers investigate the determinants of wealth and income inequality, capturing various economic, financial, political, institutional, and geographical factors. We reveal that finance plays a considerable role in shaping both distributions.
The Relation between Attention and Consciousness
Čihák, Martin ; Lukavský, Jiří (advisor) ; Kaplan, Cyril (referee)
The bachelor thesis presents findings of experiments which examined mutual relation between consciousness and various types of attention (top-down and bottom-up; feature, objective and spatial) and summarizes both empirical and theoretical arguments for and against dissociation of attention and consciousness. The conclusion of the thesis is that the literature implies attention being necessary but not sufficient condition for consciousness. In the second part of the thesis a replication study is proposed which aims to verify whether interactions of consciousness and attention, found previously within the visual modality, appear within the auditory modality as well. Keywords: consciousness, attention, perception, experimental psychology
Jump cut, the cut jumping about conventions of continuity editing
Kozáková, Tereza ; BROTHÁNEK, Adam (advisor) ; ČIHÁK, Martin (referee)
This bachelor thesis examines the discontinuous editing process - jump cut in the theoretical-historical context, as well as in the three film analyzes, both practical and meaningful. The theoretical part of this work serves to realize the basic principles of shearing composition and, in particular, defines the circumstances that are behind the successful binding of shots in general. The next part of the text is devoted to the technical aspects of the jump cut and the related aspects that are decisive for its composite quality. This part also explores the historical origin of the jump cut on film examples, where it appears first and / or consciously. To a large extent, how much and how the popular film criticism has contributed to its popularization. Finally, the analysis of the three selected films examine both the useful jump cut and the occasions when it is not. Analysis are specifically intended to characterize the importance of jump cut and its impact on the viewer in the story of the analyzed works and whether, under what circumstances the jump cut contributed to the resulting whole or not of the work.
Manifestation
Kulka, Jan ; DAŇHEL, Jan (advisor) ; ČIHÁK, Martin (referee)
This thesis is an attempt to formulate a personal manifesto of a film maker. An attempt to a reflection from a creative, technological, social and historical point of view. An attempt to find a personal answer to a fundamental ontological question: what is film? What is light? What is the nature of the relationship between film maker and the apparatus he uses. All that with a emphasis to practical application. Therefore one chapter is a case study of a special projection aparatus called Archeoscope which is both a result - embodiment - as well as an initiation of some of the thoughts mentioned above.
The Sense of the Montage
Vavrečka, Ondřej ; BREGANT, Michal (advisor) ; ČIHÁK, Martin (referee)
The thesis combines two possibilites how to see cinematography which correspond with two features of every single film cut.
BIRTH AND IMPORTANCE OF THE DANCE PHENOMENON IN THE „CINE DE CABARETERAS“ WITHIN MEXICAN CINEMA
Garduňo, Rolando ; ČIHÁK, Martin (advisor) ; ČENĚK, David (referee)
Within the Mexican cinematography, exists a sub-genre type called cabaret, cabaret dancers or brothels cinema; this thesis seeks to do a revaluation of this sub-genre through analysis of its films, concentrating primarily in deeper understanding of the use filmmakers give to music and dance as part of film´s language. Since these narratives borrow elements of film noir and conjugate with extravagant and monumental dance scenes, giving origin to a particular aesthetic that is not possible to appreciate in any other cinematographic genre. In spite of its short period of life –approximately eight years – it counts with a broad repertoire that includes more that fifty titles; since this study is not of monographic nature, a selection of film work was required which does not necessarily mean an anthology of the sub-genre; in some cases its importance resides in the contribution provided in the development and evolution of such and in others, the specific way in which dance was used. Lastly another aspect that has been considered during the elaboration this work, is the breaking point that the cabaret cinema represents in the history of mexican cinematography that consists in a change of tendency in the productions of that period, in addition to the vast influence, up until today, that these films have in mexican‘s identities or better yet in their sentimental education.
Comparing elements of Mise-en-scéne in one take shot movie Rope and Victoria
Hrdlička, Josef ; ČIHÁK, Martin (advisor) ; Horváthová, Jessica (referee)
The goal of this thesis is intended to close describe Mise-en-scéne and the elements that make up it. Next, on the example of the two films that were shot in one take, we will compare the elements and then, on the basis of this comparison, we find the best possible way out of which we can give the film its own life beyond the picture frame.
