The Effects of the UV Radiation on the Human Body
MACHOVÁ, Petra
Work maps tailored health students from the harmful effects of UV radiation and traces their knowledge about the effects of UV radiation on the body. The cohort consisted of students and combined form of Health and Social Studies University of South Bohemia in Ceske Budejovice. The aim of this work is to identify students' knowledge of ZSF JU. The effects of UV radiation on the human body and mapping the extent of protection of health of students of the ZSF JU from the harmful effects of UV radiation. The theoretical part describes the general characteristics of UV radiation and its effects on the human body. Work is more geared to actual problems of skin tumors, mainly the issues already mentioned malignant melanoma, which is currently the worldwide especially among the white population serious health problem. In this work he received a lot of attention because among all tumors occupies an important place mainly due to the increase in the number of cases in recent years, due to the very difficult to estimate prognosis and often very rapid pace. The theoretical part deals with the issues of prevention and alone and prevention programs that are reticent part of health care , and that can detect the disease at a stage when it is still treatable. Has a special position then the international program of the World Health Organization WHO Intersun that assesses and quantifies health risks and develop appropriate responses by issuing various directives, recommendations and dissemination of information, while providing practical advice and information to government health and environmental issues in UV radiation. Practical work logic device monitoring students' knowledge about the positive and negative effects of UV radiation on the body, while also monitoring their attitudes toward tanning , protection from sunlight and behavior in case of suspicious skin changes.
Interactive effects of UV radiation and drought on the accumulation of flavonols in selected herbs and grass in a mountain grassland ecosystem
Veselá, Barbora ; Surá, Kateřina ; Rajsnerová, Petra ; Klem, Karel ; Holub, Petr ; Urban, Otmar
The main objective of this 4-year experiment conducted in a mountain grassland ecosystem was to investigate the interactive effects of ultraviolet (UV) treatment and drought on changes in accumulation of UV-screening compounds (flavonols) in selected herbs (Hypericum maculatum Crantz, Rumex obtusifolius L.) and grass (Agrostis tenuis Sibth.). Inasmuch as drought and UV radiation induce similar protective mechanisms, we tested the hypothesis that UV radiation and drought elicit synergistic effects on flavonol accumulation. The experimental plots were manipulated using rainout shelters enabling the exclusion and transmission of incident precipitation and UV radiation. Generally, UV and drought treatments had similar effects on flavonol accumulation. For R. obtusifolius, UV exclusion resulted in a substantial reduction of UV-screening compounds, particularly under ambient precipitation conditions, while for H. maculatum and A. tenuis UV exclusion caused only a slight reduction of flavonol content. Similarly, the drought treatment caused an increase in flavonol accumulation.

Has UV radiation an impact on tadpoles' movement activity?
KLAPKA, Vladimír
The increasing level of the UV-B irradiation due to depleting of the ozone layer is considered to be one of the causes of global amphibian declines. The UV-B radiation causes damage to the DNA in the nuclei of the skin cells and their eventual death. In many amphibian species there was found a negative influence of the UV-B radiation on the hatching success of tadpoles and their subsequent viability. It has been assumed that tadpoles are able to actively avoid places with the higher exposure of the UV-B radiation thanks to their locomotion. In this experiment tadpoles could have chosen between a zone with the UV radiation (UV-B and UV-A) and without the UV radiation. The tadpoles have not been exposed to the UV radiation before the measurement started. The location of the tadpoles during the measurement was recorded by CCD camera. A computer program EthoVision then evaluated the time that these tadpoles spent in each of the zones and the total path length these tadpoles has swum in the zones. The measurements were performed for two groups of tadpoles differing in age to determine whether the level of development may affect the tadpoles' preference to the UV radiation. The tadpoles in both groups spent more time in the zone without the UV radiation. The tadpoles in the more advanced development phase have spent 7 times more time in average in the zone without the UV radiation than in the zone with it. The tadpoles from the second group have spent in average 2.5 times more time in the zone without the UV radiation than in the zone with the UV radiation. The total swimming path length of advanced tadpoles was almost 2.5 times longer in the zone without the UV radiation than in the zone with the UV radiation. Conversely, the total path length of younger tadpoles did not significantly differ between the zones. The total time spent in the zones with / without the UV radiation did not differ between the groups of tadpoles. Also the total path length did not differ between the groups in the zone with the UV-B radiation. However, the total path length of tadpoles had differed between groups in the zone without the UV radiation.
Effects of UV radiation and drouhgt on the accumulation of UV-screening compounds and photosynthetic parameters in selected herbs and grasses of the mountain grassland ecosystem
Klem, Karel ; Holub, Petr ; Urban, Otmar ; Rajsnerová, Petra ; Kubásek, Jiří
The main objective of the experiment conducted on a mountain grassland ecosystem was to investigate the interactive eff ects of UV treatment and drought on the changes in accumulation of UV-screening compounds and photosynthetic parameters in selected herb (Hypericum maculatum) and grass (Agrostis tenuis) species. Th e experimental plots were manipulated using roof constructions enabling exclusion or transmission of incident precipitation and UV radiation, respectively. Generally, UV and drought treatments had a similar eff ect on the accumulation of fl avonols. UV exclusion resulted in a slight reduction of UV-screening compounds, particularly under the conditions of ambient precipitation. Likewise, drought treatment caused an increase in the accumulation of fl avonols per area unit. Under UV exclusion, drought slightly reduced the light-saturated CO2 assimilation rate (Amax) in both the species studied. Th e presence of UV radiation, however, led to less of a diff erence in Amax between [wet] and [dry] treatments. In addition to the increased induction of fl avonols, UV radiation increased water use effi ciency and alleviated thus the negative impact of drought on photosynthesis.
The role of radiotherapy in the treatment of skin cancer
HOLEČKOVÁ, Ivana
Tumour diseases constitute one of the main causes of death in advanced countries. If diagnosed in time, the disease can be cured in approximately 45 % cases. Common curative methods of treating skin tumours include surgical, radiotherapeutic, chemotherapeutic or biological treatment or their combination. The subject of my thesis is the role of radiotherapy in treatment of skin tumours. I have compared the results of radiotherapeutic treatment in the period from 1981 to 1985 and from 2001 to 2005 in the oncology ward of Nemocnice České Budějovice, and also examined the count of radiated patients in comparison with the number of all reported skin tumours. On the basis of these statistical data we obtain a certain idea of the rate of use of both the above stated methods in treatment of carcinoma. The first part of my thesis is theoretical and provides a historical survey of tumour diseases, based on study of technical literature. Following the survey, I address radiotherapy in general and attend to skin anatomy; a special chapter is focused on skin cancer and its symptoms. The theoretical part describes curative methods of skin tumours. With regard to the topic of the thesis I pay larger attention to selection of a radiation source and to general planning of radiotherapeutic treatment. This part of the thesis includes a description of radiation side effects and a section discussing prevention of tumour diseases. In the practical part I compare the results of radiotherapeutic treatment of patients treated in two five-year intervals in the space of 16 years. Based on the comparison of the total number of reported oncologic diseases and the number of patients treated with radiotherapy, I arrive at the conclusion that priority is given to surgical methods rather than to radiotherapeutic ones. The reasons are obvious {--} availability of radiotherapy only in most of large centres, time {--} consumption connected with a larger number of sessions, and mental discomfort for the patient.

This work compares UV sterilizers and ozonizers on the basis of their technical parameters and market prices.
Prevention of malignant melanoma of derm
ŠŤASTNOVÁ, Lenka
The occurrence of malignant melanoma is rising. This thesis deals with malignant melanoma and its prevention. The quantitative analysis is based on a questionnaire survey. The purpose of this thesis was to detect the differences in the malignant melanoma prevention approach of the medical personnel and the ``ordinary{\crqq} people, and to detect the differences in approach of the people without personal experience with malignant melanoma and the patients with this experience. All the hypotheses were proved. The medical personnel focus more on the prevention than the ``ordinary{\crqq} people (H1). The ``ordinary{\crqq} people sunbathe excessively (H2). Patients are more protective than ``ordinary{\crqq} people (H3). Patients avoid the sunbathing and sunburn (H4). People with personal experience with malignant melanoma visit regularly a dermatologist (H5). Conclusions demonstrate that the approach to the malignant melanoma prevention is influenced by the medical personnel qualification and the patients{\crq} personal experience. Nurses informed only 2 % of the ``ordinary{\crqq} people and 4 % of the patients. It is important to promote the prevention and to raise the importance of nurses.
General public knowledge of health awareness that too much exposure to sunlight and solarium increases the casuality rate of skin melanoma
KODETOVÁ, Věra
Harmfulness of sunrays and solariums has become a very topical problem in the recent time. Excess exposure of skin to sunlight causes premature ageing of skin, creation of deep wrinkles and geriatric stains and is especially accompanied with creation of malignant melanoma. However, people don{\crq}t take this warning seriously. A big part of them still thinks that sun exposure (and sunbathing especially) is healthy and that sunburnt body is a sign of beauty and an expression of fitness. Only the awareness of the real danger and change in bad habits in the form of adequate protection against UV radiation can prevent big damages in the near future. The number of malignant melanoma skin disorders is rising every year. The number of diagnosed melanomas in the Czech Republic has increased four times over the last years. The aim of my work is to find out, how well the public is informed about the harmfulness of sunlight and solarium and how people protects themselves against the harmful effects of UV radiation. I collected the data by the query method in the form of questionnaire filled in by students and employees of a secondary vocational school, students of a vocational college and patients of a dermatology ambulance on random screens. In total, 201 question-forms were evaluated. I assumed four hypotheses, all of which have been proved. The public is adequately informed about the harmfulness of UV radiation. In most cases, people protect themselves against the effects of sunlight using creams with protective factor and sunglasses with UV filter. My assumption that women between the ages of 20 and 40 sunbath in the sun or in a solarium for cosmetic reasons has also been proved. The inadequate awareness of preventive programmes and practises which lead to early detection of skin tumours is, however, alerting. I chose this topic because of my experience from a dermatology ambulance where I work and often meet the harmful effects of UV radiation on human skin. I will use the results of my work to educate patients about the harmful effects of UV radiation. I will especially stress the education about self-investigation of skin and about Euromelanoma day programme, which serves to early diagnose of skin tumour. As I have found out, the public lacks this information. The fact that only early detected tumour is curable is important.
