This thesis is concerned with the effect of widespread internet use on the sales of audio CDs. It analyses trends in the American and Czech markets from the end of the 1990's to today. Its analysis is based on the relationship between musical genres and their respective target audiences with the hypothesis being that genres with listeners who have adopted the internet more rapidly are more affected than other genres. The thesis proves that the decrease in music sales in the last ten years, the bulk of which have been CDs, has been caused by the graudual establishment of the internet with its probable illegal downloading of recordings and the change in format to MP3 from CD.

Šebek, Michael ; Pavlíček, Antonín (advisor) ; Oškrdal, Václav (referee)
Electronic means for creation, release and distribution of music are covered by the Bachelor thesis, particularly from a starting author's point of view. Major modes to release electronic music are reviewed with a particular focus on internet operating online music distributors that link the authors with music e-shops. Dozens of online distributors are reviewed for the conditions and services they offer to starting authors. Based on the data acquired by an original research, the online distributors are evaluated and compared according to the total benefit the author can achieve. The marketing of both singles and albums is considered. A new concept of averaged album is introduced to cope with diversity of distributors. Several methods are proposed and used to evaluate and compare the author's profit. Calculations are performed using a fixed number as well as an expected number of units sold. An electronic music debutant may apply the recommendations derived in the thesis, consult the data tables and the charts included in the text or even run the presented methods on his or her own. Intellectual property rights are also discussed and several organizations protecting the rights of music authors are reviewed and evaluated from a starting author's point of view.
Multi-tier system of distribution of audiovisual content
Pulda, Michal ; Donát, Jiří (advisor) ; Mildeová, Stanislava (referee)
This paper analyzes and critically evaluates present music and video market functioning with emphasis to the sales of electronic format of this content which is preferred by current customers. It analyzes the widespread trend of content sharing via the Internet and specifies reasons why the trend is happening. It defines cases of behavior that are justifiable in the eyes of consumers and therefore legitimate (i.e. creation of backups, downloading and sharing legally unavailable content, downloading for personal use, etc.) and elements that reduce value of the legally distributed content for the customer (copy protection mechanisms or current licensing system). Furthermore, it analyzes new economic approaches that enable the utilization potential of the Internet (i.e. the Long Tail Theory) or of potential customers (Crowdsourcing, Word of Mouth, Gamification). The paper analyzes the functioning new services that use the Internet as a platform for their operation and offer users the experience they want. Proposal for this new system of audiovisual content distribution is proposed based on a synthesis of findings from the operation of these services, new theoretical approaches and author's own contribution. This new system rejects the idea of selling the content as goods (per items) and adopts an approach of access to the whole catalogue of content for a flat monthly fee. This newly born service has several tiers that differ qualitatively among themselves, also in terms of added value for users and finally in the price at which the layers are available. This system is very acceptable to customers as well as being an interesting long-term alternative to the current system for operators of the new system and copyright holders.
