Harm Reduction services at indoor or outdoor dance events
PEŠEK, Martin
The environment of dance events brings, apart from entertainment, considerable risks and stress to those who attend these events. This does not concern only the easy availability of drugs in this environment. The individual person is exposed to further external factors that may, directly or indirectly, endanger his / her health. The main task of services provided by Harm Reduction in the environment of dance events by field programmes of non-profit organizations fulfilling tasks of the state antidrug policy, is to minimise and not to eliminate these risks. The theoretical part is focused on defining the term of ``Harm Reduction{\crqq}. It explains to the readers not only the general principle of the model, but also acquaints them with specific services, such as testing tablets of synthetic drugs that become available to visitors to dance events. Further, this thesis presents characteristic features of the environment of dance events, informs on the development and the present state in the Czech Republic. It informs comprehensively on the most frequent psychoactive substances that are overused in this environment and the risks thereof. In the final chapter, I deal with the term of the safe dance event environment, which is based on Czech and foreign recommendations by government organizations. The objective of my thesis was to compare the provided services, with a subjective view of the recipients of these services. The objective of the thesis was fulfilled. The first hypothesis confirms that the presence of the Harm Reduction services is positively viewed by over 70 per cent of the participants, as part of a safe environment of a dance event. The second hypothesis confirms that the continuous enlargement of the programme with new services, including services already cancelled, is positively viewed by the participants in dance events. I used the quantitative method for the investigation. The data were obtained by means of anonymous questionnaires. The research set comprised sixty participants in dance events in the towns of Pilsen, Prague and České Budějovice. The results of my thesis could be sued as a feed back for field programmes applied in the environment of dance events. The thesis points out topical problems and suggests possible solutions and starting points for the future.

The transfer sources of hepatitis C among drug users.
BACÚŠANOVÁ, Veronika
Hepatitis C is one of the main causes of chronic liver diseases development, especially in young people. The number of people infected with the hepatitis C virus worldwide ranges from 170 to 200 millions, i.e 3 % world population. The prevalence depends on the geografical location and the socio-economic level of the country. The biggest prevalence is in Africa, South America and South-East Asia. The serious fact is that the infection often has a mild or asymptomatic course. The clinical picture may be uncharactesistic and the diagnosis can be made as late as in the advanced stages of the disease, such as liver cirrhosis or hepatocelular carcinom. In the past the most common way how to transmit the infestion was by the blood transfusion. After the screening tests were introduced in the beginning of the 90th, the number of persons infected by this way has considerably decreased. The intravenous toxicomania leading to the infection with the hepatitic C virus has been a great problem recently. More than one half of the hepatitis C occurence was caused by sharing and re-using infected syringes, needles and other aids by drug addicts in whom the prevalence of the disease is 85 %. However, their therapy is very difficult with regard to the lack of their regular cooperation with physicians. Other possible ways of the infection transmission is a sexual contact with an infected person or a less frequent transmission mother-child. There is no effective vaccination against the hepatitis C virus yet. To prevent the transmission it is neccesary to avoid contact with body fluids of infected persons. In the theoretical section I focused my attention on the summary of important facts on hepatitis C and some aspects of drug abuse. In the practical section I focused on the survey of the behaviour and attitudes of intravenous drug abusers and risks significant for the spread of hepatitis C within the drug population.
Public awareness of drug problems in České Budějovice district
KOZLOVÁ, Lucie
ABSTRACT Addictive drugs are all around us and they have become a part of our lives. The issue of drug abuse is of critical importance, global, and difficult to solve. Typically, drugs are categorized as tolerated or not tolerated by society, and more or less risky. It is vital, therefore, to know the attitude of public to the issue. Lots of drug abuse causes have already been revealed, just like the reasons why some users develop addiction while others do not. In all probability the abuse of drugs or the addiction development cannot be put down to a single background factor. Everything will depend on personality traits of the individual, on his or her environmental conditions, and on specific effects of the drug. Since I take much interest in these issues, I have chosen for my thesis the subject of Public awareness of drug abuse issues in the District of České Budějovice. I investigated what people knew about drug abuse at the District where I live; their opinions of drug abuse; whether they believed that drug abuse deteriorated social position of an individual; whether they believed it boosted the rate of crime; if people were informed about facilities assisting recovery from drug addiction within the District of České Budějovice; and, last but not least, whether they suspected what drugs could come in their way here. The thesis aimed to examine what people knew about the drug abuse issues in the České Budějovice District. This objective has been met. Fifty three percent of respondents were found well informed on the subject, while the remaining 47% lacked the information. The survey was to prove or disprove hypothesis that the public was unaware of organizations providing help to drug addicts - the hypothesis was not confirmed since 51% of respondents were informed about the relevant organizations and 49% were not. Another hypothesis predicted that the public could not tell the illegal drugs from the legal ones - it was not confirmed as the public was found sufficiently informed. The hypotheses expecting the public to believe that drug abuse drives crime and deteriorates the addict's social position were confirmed by the bulk of respondents living in the District of České Budějovice. Ninety nine percent of the respondents believed the drug abuse pushed up the crime rate and 95% were of the opinion that it affected the addict's social position. As follows from the survey, the public in the České Budějovice District was relatively well informed of the drug abuse issues, though the differences encountered between awareness and unawareness of the subject were just minor. I intend to release the thesis as an information source for the general public(in the form of brochures, internet publications or periodicals); moreover, I want to offer the results to organizations engaged in the drug abuse treatment and to students of the University of South Bohemia to serve as training material. The public will find a wealth of important drug-related information in the paper, while the addiction treating organizations will be prompted to fill the gaps still existing in information available to the general public.

Health and social situation of illegal drug users and help them provided by relevant social and health centres in the Czech Republic
HORÁK, Petr
Health and social situation of illicit drug users and the aid they receive from the respective social and healthcare institutions in the Czech Republic This thesis is composed of two main parts: theoretical and practical. Theoretical part contains chiefly categorization of illicit drugs, where we learn how they are divided according to their origin, effects, and their chemical composition, as well as their seriousness for the society. The thesis also maps the development of the illicit drug scene before and after 1989 and also discusses the importance of the year 1994{---}considered a breakthrough{---}since even before the convertibility of the Czech currency, it witnesses a massive invasion of high-quality and cheap heroine import. Furthermore, the harmful effects of drug abuse and their categorization is presented. Health hazards are correlated with data covering the HIV and viral hepatitis diffusion in the Czech Republic. This part also contains a list and description of institutions dealing with illicit drug abuse and issues connected with it. An analysis of social, health, and economic situation of illicit drug users, those filed in a L/K center. In conclusion, the thesis deals with the illicit drug use policy in the Czech Republic, where prevention, repression, prohibition and regulations are discussed, within the framework of sample of other national drug policies. The reader will find here the description of individual illicit drugs as well. The thesis aims to map the activities of K-centers, and the way their work{---}in its result, the aid to illicit drug users{---}is being made harder by the low-threshold institutions. Low-threshold institutions were chosen to represent the group of relevant institutions since they are attended by the illicit drug users most often, as well as being the first institution of this kind the users come to. The author also explored what suggestions of improvement the centers present. Three hypotheses were set: 1. The offer of services is broad in K-centers 2. Low-threshold institutions lack resources 3. Low-threshold institution representatives hold serious reservations to the illicit drug use policy in the Czech Republic The data were collected in questionnaires and secondary analysis of data from annual reports of K-centers. The questionnaires were filled in by low-threshold centers representatives. The data confirmed the set hypotheses. In the discussion, the author debates the results of his research and discusses expert literature, while explaining difficulties that he encountered composing this thesis. The conclusion deals with the suggestions for improvement, particularly of the illicit drug use policy and sums up the thesis.
