Mental Hygiene as a Fundamental Premise of Prevention of Burnout Syndrome in Selected High-Risk Professions

Helping professions are characterized by high demands on the personality of a helping person. A lot of researches show that members of these professions are at risk of the burnout syndrome. Mental hygiene serves to maintain mental health and is the basis for prevention of the burnout syndrome. The aim of the bachelor thesis is to reveal the relationship between the incidence of symptoms of burnout and compliance or violation of the mental hygiene principles. Another aim of the research is to find out, whether the members of the selected high?risk professions know about and keep the mental hygiene principles, and also to find out, whether the compliance with the mental hygiene principles has impact on the burnout prevention. The theoretical part, first of all, characterizes concepts of helping professions, psychological stress, its cause and symptoms. Burnout syndrome is then described in details ? definition, cause, symptoms and treatment. Then, the main part of the thesis follows. It is dedicated to mental hygiene as a prevention of burnout. Particular aspects of mental hygiene, such as healthy lifestyle, diet, sleep hygiene or relaxation techniques are described here. In the end other factors influencing the burnout are mentioned - supervision, self- assessment, and interpersonal relationships. To achieve the objectives, qualitative research was carried out, realized by the method of questioning, technique of the non-standardized interview. The respondents were chosen from 4 high-risks professions ? teachers, nurses, social workers and rescue workers. Quota selection was carried out, based on the results of Burnout Measure questionnaire, which examines symptoms of burnout. The research has shown that the representatives from the selected professions are aware of burnout syndrome and know mental hygiene principles. The research has also shown that integration of mental hygiene principles into lives of helping people has impact on the burnout prevention. The interviews also proved impact of other factors. Above all, good relationships at the workplace and supervision can have positive influence.
What does make teachers stressed?

The thesis deals with the issue of stress in teachers. The concepts of teacher, stressor, stress and burn out syndrome are explained, as well as the connection between them. The theoretical part is focused on the stress prevention and the defense against stress. The aim of the practical part is to detect the main stressors in teachers, as well as the frequency and the intensity of their stress and negative emotions experience with regard to their professional age, sex and specialization. Further, teachers' knowledge about stress and their effort to prevent themselves from experiencing it are investigated.
Intensity of nursing work on the oncological department.

This Bachelor thesis deals with working demands of nurses employed in oncology departments. Because of being in continuous contact with people (patients, their families or colleagues) nurses working in these departments should be empathetic, kind, patient and helpful. The theoretical part of this thesis focuses on general characteristics of oncological departments, description of nursing specifics, available oncological treatment, the role of nurses in palliative treatment and issues of burnout syndrom. The theoretical part presents the results of semi-structured interviews conducted with nurses working in oncology departments at "Ceské Budějovice Hospital" and "Na Bulovce Hospital". Based on the dialaogues were the case reports which later became the basis for category tables. The results show that nurses perceive their work as difficult, mostly from the psychological aspect. The oncology nurses have to face terminally ill people, dying and death on a daily basis. They are exposed to risks of cytostatic agents. They may often suffer from tiredness which can lead to disruption of social, physical and psychical wellfare and even to the burnout. Influenced by these factors the nurses often feel stressed and are not often familiar with how this stress can be prevented or tackled. A brochure based on the obtained information has therefore been compiled for nurses with the aim to inform them about these issues.
Burnout syndrom

The thesis is defined by a theoretical and empirical character. Its topic is focused on the term called burnout which affects teacher's profession at the primary school. The first part of the theoretical part is focused on the factors which can cause the beginning of a burnout. The next chapter defines the whole term burnout. The following part deals with the sources of the burnout. This chapter is closely related to the following chapter which is focused on the burnout expression. The particular phases of the burnout process are described in the following chapter. The attention is paid also to the teacher's work and the stress in this kind of profession. The last but one chapter introduces the consequences of the burnout and their influence on the teacher's work. The last part of the theoretical part describes the principles of the psychic hygiene and the tips on coping with stress. The practical part was realized by the help of a questionnaire. The received data serve to the comparison of the appearance of the burnout expressions between the lower primary school teachers and the upper primary school teachers and also to the comparison of these expressions between the primary school teachers and the practical primary school teachers.
The Perception of Work Motivation Moderate Medical Staff

The aim of this thesis is an analysis of motivating and discouraging elements influencing the contentment of nursing staff of the Hospital in České Budějovice a.s. The theoretical part is focused on the motivation in general, that means what the known and used theories of motivation are. Furthermore I will introduce the profession of the nurse itself and its development. I will outline the system of rewarding and lifelong education and last but not least I will mention the burnout syndrome. In the practical part of the thesis I will evaluate the results of the survey of motivation, focusing mainly on the real motivations and discouragements for the nurses, I will compare various variables, ascertain their dependencies and confirm or disapprove my own stated hypothesizes. At the end of thesis, there is a discussion, where I analyse the results and I try to suggest possible solutions regarding the gained facts.
Social skills in helping professions practice

This bachelor thesis deals with the topic of social skills in the practice of helping professions. The main objective was to determine what social skills are used by social workers for successful performance of their profession in organizations in the district of Český Krumlov. Another objective was targeted towards the determination what important skills are neglected. The theoretical part is devoted to the characteristics of basic concepts related to social skills and helping professions, where they are closely focuses on a social work. In conclusion of the theoretical part, I outlined the demands that are included in the profession of a helping worker. Information needed for the elaboration of the practical part were obtained using the method of a qualitative research by means of the practice of a semi-controlled interview with social workers in the district of Český Krumlov. The research shows that social workers for the successful performance of their profession take advantage of a communication, empathy, the ability to listen, the art of dealing with people, the ability to socialize with others, to be tolerant, to accept the other, to be professional, patient, flexible, to have expert knowledge and psychological resistance. The results further show that almost all respondents met the burnout syndrome. The work would be useful to elaborate in detail into further researches that could help to social workers to cope with demands that are placed on them and such researches also would help them to acquire and develop other social skills.
Risk of burnout of police staff

I describe the theoretical basis of the literature on the issue and its phase burnout. Next, what are the external and internal causes of this disease, what are the symptoms and what there is prevention. At the end of this theoretical part I will focus on the police profession, the police stress and police burnout.I will try to find out based on qualitative research in the practical part, which exist in the opinion of police officers in their profession stressors that could lead to burnout and what are the preventive measures against the organization of police burnout.
The Burnout Syndrom

Burnout is a problem of modern times. Few talk about it, he is not classified as a disease, but we meet with him in a many professions, especially in the helping professions. In my work I focus on burnout in police officers, on it´s characteristic symptoms, possible causes and consequences of burnout, related or other negative phenomena, such as fatigue, stress, depression etc. It also discusses preventive procedures and manuals how to prevent burnout and how to manage it. At the same time I realize how much of police officers and what groups are at risk of burnout syndrome.
