Revitalization Program of Floral Garden in Kromeriz
Camarda, Gabriela ; Mutina, Petr (referee) ; Jura, Pavel (advisor)
The main point of this project is to activate now unused and neglected area of orange and Dutch gardens, while responding to the context of the garden and complement it. The design does not overshadow the historical value and beauty of the garden forms, as is known from the engravings created just after its completion. The result is a conception of "the journey" as an extension of the axis activity (input object - rabbit Hill - aviary) and location of activities on the intersection of "reactions" and builtable territory.

Floral Gardens Kromeriz – a landmark of transnational importance. It is an example which has influenced architectural development in Europe. This Libosad, which has evolved since the 17th century, was used for art loving guests’ delectation. At the present time this world full of antique gods’ sculptures, figures from history or myths; this world formed by espalier walls and blooming flower beds being it all underlined with the work of plasterers, sculptors and fresco painters; this Libosad world is not able to offer to a present person what she/he expects. Since the reason why people visit these gardens has partly changed. The majority of people come to see the landmark, which in 1998 got registered in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list, in the first place and they come to learn something about it. Once on this tourist occasion, they also have a rest and spend pleasant times in the gardens. As a result of that there comes a new space for gaining information and relaxation in one into being.

The aim of the project is to create a visitors' centre for the Flower Garden in Kroměříž. The building is situated in Holland and Orange Gardens that are not being used at the moment. The overall concept of the proposal reacts to a historic trace of a renaissance-baroque garden. The shape of the building divides the given territory into two proportionally more pleasant areas, creates facilites for visitors of the garden, provides places for educational activites in an auditorium for exhibitons and lectures and offers relaxation in a café. At the same time, the building detracts nothing from the graden's green stay areas, but provides them on its grassy roof. The flashing point is an observatory place at the very end of the roof, from where there is a view of the Flower Garden from height that enables visitor to grasp a valuable heritage of 17th century garden art. A new functional settlement of the entrance building with a ticket office and an information centre on the ground floor and a flat for the administrator of the garden on the first floor is a part of the project. The southern part of the given territory is projected for the purpose of a garden shop and as a green stay area with a rabbit hill and a baroque volary.

The topic of the bachelor thesis is the design of the revitalization of the foreground of the Květná garden in Kroměříž and of the service building for visitors. When solving the project, the first ideas were initiated by its strong social context. The garden art has always been a reflection of its own period. The founders of gardens – the aristocracy, monarchs or clergy – have used gardens as a means to represent their social status. They have tried to point out the things that have been conceived as artistically and technically (and later socially) progressive and correct. The main ideal concept of my project results from these facts and considerations. I seek to represent today’s era and society – within the meaning of the good, what they could and according to my opinion should bring to each other. And what they perhaps do… That is why I apply knowledge of today’s technique and ecology in my project – in terms of the use of local natural materials and renewable energy resources. At the same time I try to take advantage of and to give support to the frankness of today’s society and to create a project with a social and human overlap. I incorporate a function of a temporary sheltered housing into the area and support integration of people into the society through garden works and therapies. Last but not least – I would like to open the gardens to the broadest scope of the laic public and to create not only an esthetic function, but an educational as well. From the architectural point of view, I tried to bring contemporary components into the garden, which, however, respect the historical evolution and the temporary situation and connect to them. In the Holandská garden I placed the visitors centre into the ground plan – a path of the former “casino”. It closes up this lengthwise space, it creates a notion of continuance of the colonnade of the Květná garden (and transcription of the arcade on its façade), and it balances the dimension of the tropical glasshouse on the other side of the garden. Regarding the solution of the garden space, I respect the cross axes of the Květná garden as well as the main longitudinal axe of the foreground. I create a simple composition of larger sheets with two new “piazzas” – at the place of the renewed Neptune’s fountain and in front of the visitor’s center. By creating the elevated sheets I add the third dimension to the parcel. In the southern part of the foreground I compose functionally different spaces along the longitudinal axe. Hence, visitor’s attention is non-violently drawn to the aviary. Crosswise, the garden is divided into several parts – the representational one (by the cold glasshouse), the agricultural and educational one (but no less attractive) with the garden centre, and the leisure area of the aviary and the so called “rabbit hill”.

The project respects the original conception of the garden to create space closed against surroundings. In the Holland garden I create one building that contains galery, café, bookshop and education center. The groundplan shape results from the axes of the Floral Garden. The Holland Garden is a changing space, variable is the inner disposition of the building as well. In the south part I project glasshouses, outdoor patches, a workshop building, water atractions and a voliere for keeping birds. The groundplan solution of this part goes out from the groundplan of the building in the Holland garden.

Garden culture until the mid-19th century for the highest possible form of art. In addition to architecture and horticulture to connect the sculpture, painting, poetry, music, philosophy etc. Kroměřížs gardens represent more than halfthousand continuous development garden art. History shows the substantial gardens through human thought (micro) and refers to the outside world, macrocosms. It is therefore possible to monitor direction from the Renaissance ideal of man as an administrator balanced univers, through Baroque attempt to control mechanical soulless matter after attempting to return of original nature, the spiritual essence in the 18th and in the first half of the 19th century that However, the 20th century again soon repudiated.
