Flowers as a Lawn Substitute
Svoboda, Oldřich ; Augustinová, Ludmila (advisor) ; Doležalová, Jitka (referee)
Ordinary lawns are difficult to maintain financially and can be time consuming, especialy if we try to cultivate lawn in places where the grass does not grow naturaly. The use of flowers as a subsitute to lawn brings forward new possibilities for otherwise neglected surface. Applying these alternatives are based on natural principles that initially cost higher but benefit far better in the long run. The chapter Introduction deals with issues of lawn versus flowers. This chapter focuses on typical habitats, groups of plants and works of experts. The chapter Literature Review focuses on different possibilities of ground covers with herbaceous vegetation in five subheads. Subhead Explanation of Basic Terms contains explanations of terms for lawn, flower - blooming plant and lawn substitutes from the perspective of different authors. Subhead Lawns briefly describes the history of the current lawns, mentions their function, types, methods of growing and its maintenance. The important idea is the negative effect of monocultures on the environment and how to reduce it. Subhead Groups of Flowers Used as Temporary Substitutes describes the topic of annuals and biennials in further details. It brings definition and characteristics of these flowers. Their use in different conditions either separately, as perennial plantings or as semi-wild structures are mentioned there. Subhead Groups of Flowers Used as Permanent Substitutes deals with perennials in detail. Flowering plants are divided according to the place of habitat. Describes the growing of flowers as a lawn substitute and its features such as visual similarity with lawn; resistance to pedestrian traffic, height, foliage, flowering time, etc. It focuses on the use of bulbs, alpine plants, xerophilous plants, flowers from the woods, hygrophilous plants, aromatic plants and other groups. The last subhead, Specific Groups of Flowers as a Lawn Substitute, discusses the flower meadows, extensive perennial flower bed and roof gardens. It brings insight into the history, the use in different habitats, growing, or flower mixtures on the market. It mentions the financial and environmental burden. The chapter Conclusion evaluates if the objectives of the work have been achieved - giving the overview of flowers as a lawn substitute and the comparision with a lawn.
Assessment of developments of perennial beds in the area CULS
Lédl, Daniel ; Matiska, Pavel (advisor) ; Adam, Adam (referee)
This Bachelor thesis is build on the previous one "Assessment of developments of perennial beds in the area CULS" from 2014. It continues in assessing data collected from previous thesis with the addition of data for the year 2015. The observations concerned 10 perennial beds, which are located in the Libosad on the sunny habitat, and 8 beds shady which are based at the building of the Faculty of Economics and Management. This assessment took from April to November. Assessment is focused on the beds in the shade. Every bed is represented by schematic drawing. For each perennial, there is process data of coverage, comparison with previous year and if it become extinct, very feeble or expansive species. In addition, on perennials in shady habitat where assessed their aesthetic functioning from April to September. Finally, it is accompanied by the photographs taken during the reporting period. The aim is to give insight on the behavior of perennials in the given circumstances, to discuss the causes of non-viable species and propose appropriate solutions. The main lacks where observed in extensive attitude to beds in shady habitat. The most of species used there showed symptoms of lack of moisture from June to the end of observation. By reason of this limiting factor, many species die out and the surviving species didn't reach high quality at all. Beds located in sunny habitat were impressive and have the highest representation of expansive species.
Application of perennials in a system of vertical garden
Kozderová, Viola ; Matiska, Pavel (advisor) ; Pavel, Pavel (referee)
The thesis Application of perennials in a system of vertical garden aims to verify the cultivation of selected assortments of perennials which are planted in vertical exterior walls with substrate technology. Another aim is to suggest and recommend new taxa for further cultivation on these walls. The literary research part presents the basic concepts which explain the term perennial. Perennials are divided into several categories depending on their demands for the habitat with the purpose to understand the varied character of their growth and the differences between the individual species. Furthermore, the thesis includes a chapter on vertical gardens, whose founder is believed to be the French botanist Patrick Blanc. He was the first to have presented his green wall Mur végétal in France. Facade greening is more widely spread abroad (e.g. in France, Singapore or London) thanks to the favourable climatic conditions. This form of plant cultivation is being attempted in the Czech Republic and new species of perennials which would thrive in the local climate are being tested. Testing of perennials was carried out on five vertical walls on the estate belonging to the test station of the faculty of gardening in Troja, Prague. The walls were marked with letters and stationed according to sun exposure intensity (A shadow, B, C, D sunlight, E direct sunlight). A new assortment of perennials was planted on walls A and B. Previously tested species were used on wall C and the plants were set in an ornament. Walls D and E had already been planted. All the walls were regularly monitored three or four times per month. Over the course of the observation, regular watering and maintenance of the perennials were carried out (e.g. weeding, cutting and chemical treatment). Assessment of the plants was carried out based on a scale of 1 to 5 points and the criteria included colouring, habitus, vitality and overall aesthetic appeal of the plants. Points for the individual species of perennials tested on walls A, B, D and E were counted and the ones with the highest amount of points (60% and more) are suitable for planting on vertical walls. Wall C was assessed by 50 evaluators using a questionnaire the overall aesthetic appeal of the wall was evaluated. The results briefly describe the advantages and disadvantages of the individual species of perennials depending on their development during the observed period. Furthermore, a list of species suitable for planting on vertical walls is created based on the points acquired. These species are also graphically depicted based on the aesthetic appeal of the plant over the observed period. The first six places comprise the perennials Bergenia cordifolia (198 p.), Carex comans (187 p.), Epimedium x versicolor Sulphureum (171 p.), Cerastium biebersteinii (222 p.), Lewisia cotyledon (210 p.) and Festuca scoparia (207 p.). The discussion deals with the issue of vertical gardens and cultivation of perennials which commonly grow in shallow soil profile. In conclusion, species which can be grown on vertical exterior walls with substrate technology were identified in the assortment of selected perennials. These species are indicated in the results.

Metodika hodnocení taxonomické skladby trvalek pro potřeby oboru ZaKA
Hrabík, Jiří
The evaluation methodology of taxonomic structure of perennials for the needs of horticulture and landscape architecture defines a new way of description and selection of the best quality varieties of perennials for use in practice. This methodology originated from a previously published evaluation methodologies of taxonomic structure of perennials and it has been enriched with new features. These features include the new system of capturing of development of variety during the time of year and the system of overall evaluation of varieties using the defining parameters (not only the subjective evaluation). This methodology is the main output of this thesis. The methodology was tested on a range of the genus Hemerocallis L. in the complex of Faculty of Horticulture in Lednice, Mendel University in Brno. According gained experience from the field the methodology has been improved and amended. The methodology was developed to combine the efficiency and accuracy of selecting varieties with good economy of evaluation. It is also useful for a wide range of taxa (after modification). If the methodology will be applied in the future, it will be possible to use it to select the most suitable varieties for the landscape architecture objects.
