Specific features of nursing care provided to members of the Church of Scientology.
MATOUŠKOVÁ, Eva
The Church of Scientology was officially registered in Los Angeles in 1954. It is present in more than 150 countries of the world, and is professed by over 8 million people. The founder of the movement is the American author of science fiction and fiction, Laffayete Ron Hubbard, who conducted research in the sphere of the human spirit, summarised in his books "Dianetics". Later on, he focused his research on spiritual beings and their abilities. This gave rise to an applicable religious philosophy - Scientology. It has not been possible to register the Church of Scientology officially in the Czech Republic so far, and therefore it acts as the civil association of "Dianetické centrum" (the Dianetic Centre). The number of its members and sympathisers in this country is not very high, reaching approximately 800 persons. Still, it is important for us to know the differences of this minority, to be able to provide its members with nursing care corresponding to their specific needs. This subject is dealt with by the multi-cultural nursing care studying cultures and religions from the point of view of nursing practice. In connection with globalisation, this subject becomes even more topical. The national, cultural and ethnic structure of the population undergoes gradual changes and the number of foreigners legally residing in the territory of the Czech Republic keeps growing. For this reason, it is important even for nurses to be prepared and have at least the minimum knowledge of multi-cultural / trans-cultural nursing care that will enable them to provide adequate nursing care respecting the specifics in question. The objective of my thesis is to get to know the specific features of nursing care provided to members of the Church of Scientology and to establish the specific features of their life style. To meet the objectives, I set five research questions. Research question 1: Do members of the Church of Scientology have specific needs when they are being provided nursing care? Research question 2: What is the attitude of members of the Church of Scientology to the health care provided in the Czech Republic? Research question 3: Do members of the Church of Scientology have specific spiritual needs? Research question 4: What attitude do members of the Church of Scientology have towards their health? Research question 5: Do members of the Church of Scientology have a specific life style? To collect data for fulfilling my research objectives and obtaining answers to the research questions, I applied the method of qualitative research. To conduct the qualitative research I used the technique of a semi-structured interview with the members of the Church of Scientology attending the Dianetic Centre in Prague. The interview contained altogether 46 questions divided into four areas, and the participants were four men and four women of different ages and different lengths of being members of the Church. The qualitative examination established the main and most distinct specific feature in providing nursing care to members of the Church of Scientology, which is maintaining silence at the time when human mind is weakened. Further, the research showed that scientologists respect physicians and do not exclude them in cases of accidents or danger of life. They normally undergo preventive examinations and do not object to being vaccinated provided that they are supplied with sufficient information. The only exception is psychiatry. Being provided with assists constitutes the only spiritual need, and the Church of Scientology has no specifics in terms of diet. This thesis may be used as a study material for general nurses and students of nursing studies, to expand knowledge in the field of multi-cultural / trans-cultural nursing care, which will facilitate providing culture-specific nursing care to members of this religious minority.
Specifics of prenatal care for women from certain minorities in the gynecological clinic.
NOVÁKOVÁ, Markéta
Due to the fact that from the 1990s there has been a noticeable increase in the number of foreigners residing in the Czech Republic, it is necessary to respect their cultural specifics in health care. Many foreigners in our country have a long-term or permanent residence and have families here. Increasing emphasis is given to care for pregnant women. In the pregnancy period, the woman experiences significant physical and mental changes. The main aspect of caring for a pregnant woman is the continuous monitoring of the health and proper development of the foetus. For midwives to be able to provide quality care for patients from different cultures, they must be culturally competent and empathetic enough to handle the specifics of working with these pregnant women. Many complications in nursing care are caused by a communication barrier that arises between the medical staff and the patients, even if they are of the same nationality and speak the same native language. The risk of communication problems increases in the case of women from minorities. The objectives of this thesis are: Objective 1: Determine how women from selected minorities view the prenatal care in the country. Objective 2: Map the knowledge that midwives have of the specifics of care in individual cultures. The following research questions were determined: 1) How do women from selected minorities perceive the prenatal care in the Czech Republic? 2) To what extent is the culture of the client respected during care? The practical part was elaborated based on qualitative research. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews. Respondents were asked the same questions, but these were elaborated on during the interviews, which led to the subsequent categorization of interviews. A total of 20 basic questions were compiled. The research sample consisted of six pregnant women and four midwives. The criterion for selection of the pregnant women was Vietnamese or Ukrainian nationality. The criterion for choosing midwives was that they had to be employed at gynaecological and obstetric clinics. From interviews with midwives clear that they strive to respect the wishes of all patients, both those related to their culture and environment from which they came, as well as those related to their character and personality. However, the research also shows that there are also slight doubts that could lead to misunderstandings, and these are solely due to lack of information. Therefore, the output of this work should be the organization of a seminar or a contribution within a conference, which would provide healthcare professionals with basic information and experience in the care of patients from selected minorities in Czech health care facilities. The topic of this seminar could be: "The specifics of caring for selected minorities in Czech health care." The first part of the research sample consisted of pregnant women who have different experiences with care in their home country. In their testimonies they mention minor shortcomings, but are satisfied with the care provided in the Czech Republic and some of them expressed that they are certain that this level of care could not be provided to them in their home country.
Comparison of the availability of resources on multicultural nursing in the Czech Republic and Great Britain.
SHIVALANKA, Anna
Currently multicultural nursing is an increasingly discussed topic. New resources are being created that inform nurses how to care about patients from different cultural groups. The main objective of the study was to explore and compare the availability of these resources to nurses in the Czech Republic and Great Britain and further clarification on what specific resources there are for nurses working with patients from minorities. We asked three research questions. Firsly, how often did staff in Czech and British hospitals get into a situation where they cared for people from some of the minorities and needed to seek information about such care? Secondly, what is the availability of resources on multicultural nursing? Thirdly, what is the clarity and intelligibility of resources on caring for members of minorities that are available to healthcare professionals? Qualitative research was conducted which has been established for the research questions. The actual survey was carried out by non-standardized interviews with a research collection. The conditions for selecting respondents were: a sample of colleagues who personally knows the author and works in a hospital, have at least 5 years? experience and were willing to devote their time to the interviews. Interviews formed a base for the research categorization. The results are based on the interviews and were processed using framework analysis (categorization groups). From these results it is evident that nurses in Great Britain face patients from minority groups more often than their Czech colleagues. Nurses from both countries appreciate that there are specifics of care for each minority group. Language barrier is resolved by nurses in both countries in a similar way. In addition the British nurses also stated that they tried to learn basic words in the language they encountered most often. In the field of multicultural education the British nurses are in advance of the Czech ones. Regarding their own initiative when searching for resources on multicultural nursing, most Czech nurses do not feel the need to search for such information. All the interviewed nurses from Great Britain actively and voluntarily seek such information. There is also a considerable difference in access to information in the workplace. Most Czech nurses stated that they do not have such resources in the workplace, while all British nurses know where to find this information at their workplace. All interviewed nurses - both from the Czech Republic and Great Britain ? would welcome a unified source that would provide them with information regarding the specifics of nursing care for minority groups. Most Czech and British nurses are also unaware of the specific legal provisions that would legislate the care of foreigners. It is imperative that nurses are aware of their own responsibility for the education and awareness of multicultural nursing. They must not be indifferent to the feelings of their patients from different cultures and must actively educate and inform themselves about multicultural care and contribute to its development. Nurses must also behave as prescribed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and International Council of Nurses ? most importantly with unconditional respect for their patients. Responsibility for their knowledge and skills is up to the nurses themselves as well as their employers. The purpose of this thesis is to highlight the need for awareness and education of nurses in the field of multicultural nursing, both in basic training, and in subsequent courses and in the form of self-education. This paper should also highlight the need for uniform, well arranged and user-friendly resource that will be available to all nurses. Until nurses are well educated in the field of multicultural care, nursing care can not be provided in a holistic manner which is the goal of modern nursing.
The Nursing Approach to the Jehovah{\crq}s Witnesses at Medical Treatment Units
BRAUNOVÁ, Alexandra
The topic of the diploma thesis is ``The Nursing Approach to the Jehovah{\crq}s Witnesses at Medical Treatment Units{\crq}q. The probability of a nurse coming across a Jehovah{\crq}s Witness is considerable. Jehovah{\crq}s Witnesses form a large group within the Czech Republic, and therefore the nursing staff should also be ready to treat patients who belong to this community. All this in compliance with the current trend of applying the thoughts of transcultural/multicultural nursing while treating the patients. The present thesis is a contribution to this very discipline. Its task was to investigate the specifics of the Jehovah{\crq}s Witness community, and what the expectations of their members are when it comes to nursing care. With reference to the specifics and expectations, we attempted to detect the problem situations that may come up when caring for the members of the Jehovah{\crq}s Witness community. All this information was investigated in order to be able to offer culturally sensitive nursing care to the patients who belong to the Jehovah{\crq}s Witness community. For the empiric part of the thesis, four objectives were set that lead to three research questions and three hypotheses. Two research methods were chosen, the qualitative method: a semi-standardized dialogue with the respondents being members of the Jehovah{\crq}s Witnesses; and a quantitative method: a questionnaire for the nursing staff of the medical treatment units. The conception of a Jehovah{\crq}s Witness in general is improved by the division of the information in the dialogue according to the Giger and Davidhizar transcultural nursing assessment model. For further clarification of the problem, questions concerning hospitalization and nursing staff were added. The results of the dialogues were drafted as case reports which were then categorized in transparent tables and charts. The questionnaire contained identification questions and questions clarifying the given problem. The remaining questions were aimed at direct or indirect verification of the hypotheses we have set. The outcome of the questionnaire investigation is introduced using tables and charts. The specifics of the approach of the nursing staff are summarized in a nursing care standard, which can be used by the nursing staff when caring for a client/patient who belongs to the Jehovah{\crq}s Witnesses. The thesis offers information on the Jehovah{\crq}s Witness community, and explains the singularities of the approach of the nursing staff towards them. The outcome of the thesis should serve as study material for the students of nursing disciplines, and at the same time we would appreciate it if it was published to become available to the professional community. The thesis should be a contribution to the improvement of the quality of nursing care.

ČOUDKOVÁ, Lenka
The problems of buddhism on a care ward has been theme of our works, which we{\crq}ve devided in theoretical and practical part. In theoretical part, nurses and also wider public can acquiant with basic informations of buddhism. Theoretical part is devided into eight main chapters. In theoretical part we{\crq}ve reached for {\clqq}List dissimilarities in satisfying needs of buddhism confessors to health and diseases.`` In practical part we discuss reults of our research. To get data, we used technique of questionary. Content of third aim was {\clqq}Compare sister knowledge of Southbohemian and Centralbohemian region in specifications of buddhism confessor care.`` We set two hypotheses for this aim. Hypothesis no.1 considered, that nurses are able to satisfy needs of buddhist with their professionality and hypothesis no.2 considered, that nurses knowledge about care probleme in Southbohemian region is lower than in Centralbohemian region. Both hypotheses were confirmed after data processing. Pieces of knowledge from theoretical and practical part are included in the end of this work. There is also mentioned usage of work in practice {--} motivate nurses in attractive form, so they have interest to learn new informations about new cultures and ethnic communities. Nurses also to get wider general view, necessary at this time. In the end in separate chapter the {\clqq}Care specifications of buddhism confessors in sanitations`` is described, which was subject of second aim. For completion of this aim the standard of nursing care was elaborated: {\clqq}Principles of implementation on nursing care, confessing by buddhists in sanitations.``
Multicultural approach of nurses to the chinese minority
ZAPLETALOVÁ, Květa
This survey assignment is orientated towards subjects closely linked to each other to establish how NHS nurses in the Czech Republic perceive ethnic minorities. What are the opinions on tuition of multicultural nursing and if there are any differences between university and college educated nurses? It was established that the better-educated influences viewed an importance in multicultural nursing. The next aim of this research was to monitor knowledge of nurses working in areas of multicultural nursing and how they prepare to meet their clients. Also if introduction of carer models is needed in preparation. Multicultural education has already been introduced in colleges, but is lacking evidence how effective this is in practice. Even though nurses are dissatisfied with the obligatory lifelong education (mainly because it is an involuntary system), this is still a necessary way to complete their training, especially the older nurses. The last phase of study was investigating the knowledge of nurses caring for clients from China and their awareness of the Chinese culture. Again, the differences between university and college educated nurses was evaluated. The second hypothesis determined that the level of education did not play a role in this survey, the nurses had no particular knowledge of Chinese clients or any special care that would be needed. Collecting of all information was carried out by the usual method of survey forms. Rating the statistically important results was achieved by using the ``Pearsons {$\omega$}- square test{\crqq}. This is a method of maximum credibility and a ``Fishers exact test{\crqq}. The statistic analyses proved that the first hypothesis did not confirm the second hypothesis. This survey assignment showed the importance of introducing multicultural education at college level and no later, And also the importance of stimulating students in taking more interest in other cultures. My work on this subject revealed that there is no awareness of specific care required when dealing with Chinese clients, hypothetically because of the lack of exact and scientific literature of this minority living in Czech Republic.
