Artistic expression via methods of training memory and cognitive abilities in senior citizens.

The thesis deals with the use of artistic expression in methods to train the cognitive functions of the elderly. The theoretical part includes a summary of findings about aging and old age and explains the importance of stimulating the elderly in our republic. It also deals with characteristic features of artistic expression and artheterapy for elderly. In the practical part methods are described which exploit artistic expression in enhancing cognitive functions not only in elderly people with dementia within the framework of the stimulation programme in old people's homes but also, by means of voluntary memory training courses. The author tries to ascertain the extent how art therapy methods can be applied in these programmes in such a way that the two approaches could complement, supplement and enrich each other.
Memory training with senior citizens

This is a theoretical work. It deals with the topics of senior citizens and the aging process in an abbreviated conception, periodization of old age, and active life of seniors. It describes forms of social work with seniors in medical facilities, home environments and communities, and in old people's homes. Further, it describes memory: its definition, types of memory, memory loss, reasons why people forget, work with memory and advice on memory improvement from the medical point of view. The last chapter focuses on memory training. It describes the aim of memory training with seniors, benefits of memory training, memory training in home environment and in complex care. Next there are particular mnemonics and exercises focused on individual areas (concentration, senses, speech) with examples. Memory training is one of the effective instruments of increasing self-sufficiency and prolongation of the senior independence.
Memory training in the Centre for seniors called PATUP at the South Bohemia University, Faculty of Health and Social Studies

The theoretical part of the thesis is focused on the process of aging of cognitive functions, the brain, memory and its division, dementia syndrome, memory training and methods of memory training, the description of the Centre for the Elderly PATUP and courses of memory training. The main objective of the research part was to assess the courses of memory training in this centre at the faculty of Health and Social Studies of the University of South Bohemia. Partial objective 1 was to assess satisfaction of the elderly ? the participants - with the courses of memory training in the Centre for the Elderly PATUP. Partial objective 2 was to assess the courses of memory training from the trainers´ point of view. Partial objective 3 was to assess the courses of memory training in the Centre for the Elderly PATUP from the sponsor?s point of view. Partial objective 4 was to write a manual for memory trainers with a video recording with a sample lesson of the memory training course. To realize the research part of the thesis, qualitative research, the method of questioning, the technique of a semi-conducted interview and a technique of a focus group were applied. The research set consisted of 28 people who were divided according to the research questions in three groups ? memory trainers, the elderly (participants of the memory training courses) and the sponsor of the Centre for the Elderly PATUP. The research results, processed by SWOT analysis, showed clearly strong and weak points of the memory training courses and also showed recommendations from all respondents (the elderly, the trainers and the sponsor) leading to improvements of memory training courses. The thesis will contribute to creating methodology of the Centre for the Elderly PATUP and a methodological manual of MTC (memory training courses). The thesis also contributes to making MTC more efficient and will serve as educational material for memory trainers in the Centre for the Elderly PATUP.
Stereotypes about aging population

First, the paper presents stereotypes about aging and its impact on the aging population. It is indisputable that these stereotypes, no matter whether they are positive or negative, have an influence on psychological as well as physical health. Second, the paper informs about memory training programme for seniors and the part of research focused on subjectively perceived changes in relevant aspects. Research findings are discussed in terms of possibilities to influence the stereotypes about the aging population.
The memory training by children, adults and seniors

The target of the work is to study the memory training by the children, adults and seniors. The work has a theoretical character. It describes the memory development from birth to the senior age, it characterizes the memory and its impairments by the children, adults and seniors. In context of aging process in our population there is a rumour about the memory training by the older age group. But it is necessary to be aware of it, that the memory training is important in every age and the sooner we begin, the better quality we retain in the older age. The work describes the techniques, which are suitable not only for the children of school age, but it targets the group of sucklings and toddlers too. The memory training is very important in prevention for our mental health and cognitive efficiency.
EFEKT MEMORY REHABILITATION OF SENIORS IN CONSIDERATION OF QUALITY OF LIFE

A cognitive rehabilitation is an intervention seeking to restore or compensate cognitive deficiencies with an aim to improve the everyday efficiency of the client. A part of the cognitive rehabilitation is a cognitive training that means a repeated drill and an effort to improve cognitive activities. The memory training is a combination of the cognitive training and relaxing psychomotor exercising. It also fulfills a social function because mutual get-togetherness and interactions happen in the course of it. The main tendency is to learn techniques and strategies leading seniors to an improvement of their memorizing, so that they could use them in their everyday life. The purpose of this work is to ascertain an influence of the cognitive rehabilitation on clients living in MÁJ Rest Home in České Budějovice. The chosen elaboration method of my bachelor work is an experiment. A level of cognitive abilities of the seniors was discovered by a pre-test at the beginning of the experiment. There were monitored results of various tests {--} MMSE, short-term memory, quality of life and everyday cognitive difficulties test. The level of the cognitive abilities was verified by a post-test at the end of the experimental action and test results were compared with the checking group. The research confirmed that the cognitive rehabilitation contributes to an increasing of the quality of life, an improvement of the short-term memory and to an easement of everyday cognitive difficulties.
Memory training and reminiscent in the House for seniors St.Jiří in Pilsen

In the diploma work named Memory and Reminiscence Training and in Domov sv. Jiří in Plzeň I deal with the above mentioned topic in theory and practice. The main aim of the work is to describe the aims, methods and techniques of the memory and reminiscence training by the seniors in the retirement home sv. Jiří. The partial objective is to state the benefits of the memory and reminiscence training from the point of view of the workers and residents of the retirement home. In the theoretical part I specify the issue of ageing and the old age and the issue of the memory and its components. Further to this part there is a description of the memory training and practical illustrations of the memory training and individual exercises. In the reminiscence part I deal with the specification of this term, the reminiscence therapy, the methods that support reminiscence and reminiscence boxes. The last chapter of the theoretical part deals with the failures in cognitive functions. In the practical part I give a description of the qualitative research in the retirement home of sv. Jiří where I carried out a course of the memory and reminiscence training within 15 meetings with the home residents. The research sample consisted of 10 seniors and 10 workers. For the research I used the half-guided dialogue method and the participant observation, and the research questions comprised of identifications questions, questions on memory training and questions on reminiscence. In the methodology part I describe the memory training methods, the course realization and the research sample. I also deal with the description of the retirement home of sv. Jiří and its establisher Městská charita Plzeň. As the outcomes of the qualitative research there are the case studies based on the carried out dialogues and the participant observation. In the discussion I comapare the achieved results of the research with the theory. I also describe my experience from the course of the memory and reminiscence training and its individual meetings with the seniors, I assess the opinions of the workers and the benefit of the memory and reminiscence training. In the conclusion I deal with the assessment of the whole work, especially its aim, and the benefits of the memory and reminiscence training in the retirement home of sv. Jiří in Plzeň.
Cognitive function training in ageing population

The aim of the project is to contribute to the reduction of negative demographic trend in Czech Republic. In the first stage we assess the efficiency of memory training in ageing population (subjective meaning, objective change in performance; immediately after training and 6 months later). We compare the results with a control group using the same tests.
