Resource optimisation in the indoor aquaponic farm
Ondruška, Vojtěch ; Touš, Michal (oponent) ; Teng, Sin Yong (vedoucí práce)
Energy efficiency and economic viability are the often-quoted issues related to aquaponic farming. This thesis aims to identify measures which would enhance the profitability of aquaponics business while conserving energy and other resources and to verify the selected measures on the testing aquaponic farm. The process engineering optimisation technique was used to tackle the resource issue and the computer vision technique was applied to automatically monitor the growth rate of produce as the main revenue stream in aquaponics. Using the P-graph method, process integration and search for process alternatives, the best feasible structure was found with more than 9 times higher annual net income compared to the current process structure. Another energy and water savings were achieved by the installation of the reflective foil and further utilisation of the aquaponics effluent in the hydroponic section intended for seedlings cultivation. These measures can help the aquaponic farms to become more competitive and to decrease their ecological footprint.
