Loan words in film and theatre vocabulary in Russian and Czech

The thesis deals with loan words in film and theatre vocabulary in Russian and Czech language. While earlier the loans were adopted from different languages (French, Italian, English and German), today English is mostly the source. The theatre vocabulary has not changed much lately (one of the reasons might be that it had already absorbed a great deal of loans in the past) while in the film vocabulary the influence of English is immense. Russian language despite its different graphic system inclines to English loans more than Czech that tends to be more traditional. The thesis follows the processes in which the English vocabulary is absorbed by both flective languages, describing the similarities and differences between them. A survey was carried out among Russian and Czech native speakers in order to define to what extend they understand the meaning of the loan words. In both languages the loan film and theatre terms form an important group of new vocabulary. A dictionary with over one hundred film and theatre terms, including their etymology, source language and context in which they are used in Russian and Czech is part of the thesis.
