Selected factors affecting the thyroid gland in ruminants
KŘÍŽOVÁ, Zuzana
Dairy farming is one of the key livestock industries in the Czech Republic. The overall success of breeding is currently determined not only by the quantity but also by the quality of the obtained product. With the ever increasing demands on livestock production, the demands on the organism's integration systems, which regulate the functions of tissues and organs to ensure homeostasis of the organism, are increasing. This fact also affects the endocrine system, its response to stimuli from the internal and external environment is slower compared to the nervous system, but it induces longer-term changes. Several analyzes of biological material focused on evaluation of selected factors that may affect thyroid gland activity in ruminants have been carried out in the framework of the dissertation. In cattle, the effects of phase and order of lactation, seasons, breeding membership, stimulation of energy metabolism and the effect of varying amounts and form of iodine supplemented to the ration were evaluated. The effect of climate, age, pregnancy and lactation on the thyroid hormone dynamics was evaluated in sheep. In connection with the activity of the thyroid gland, for which a sufficient amount of iodine in the body is necessary for its proper function, the iodine content of pool and individual milk samples was also evaluated as indicators of dairy iodine saturation. In case of sufficient or excess intake iodine is excreted in the urine and in lactating animals by milk. Milk and dairy products are the main natural source of iodine in the Czech Republic and despite the fact that iodine deficit is currently considered to be well managed in the Czech Republic and iodine intake is optimal, it is still necessary to monitor the situation regarding iodine saturation of both humans and animals. The aim is to prevent health complications caused by iodine deficiency, but also to monitor the development of the situation in general and to prevent possible excess income.
