This diploma thesis is a comparative study of Czech and American curricular documents concerning the educational reform that is taking place both in the Czech Republic and the United States of America. By comparing the documents I have tried to find strengths and weaknesses of both reforms and educational systems in general and suggest some means of improvements in areas where I found it useful. The second chapter is dealing with the national curricular frameworks, and is comparing the Czech national framework to Michigan Curriculum Framework. The third chapter is concerned with schools' own curricula, and with the recommended ways how to develop them in both countries. As this thesis is aimed at area social studies and at civic education particularly, the next chapter compares the content standards and benchmarks of both frameworks. In the practical part of this diploma thesis I described the project that I carried out at middle school Vinařská in Ústí nad Labem in the Czech...

I tried to compare these two systems and to show certain mutual and certain differing elements. I accomplished an analysis of both educational systems, both in general terms and concretely, and I tried to reveal their principle. The next aim of this thesis is to show the problems or, to be more precise, the imperfections occurring in the Czech system. I also tried to outline some solutions, particularly with the help of the French model. In concrete terms and the last aim is the system of entrance exams for universities in Czech Republic, which presents considerable imperfections, especially in the area of cooperation with the secondary education. I carried out a research for which I used model entrance tests for some universities and scientific literature concerning education in the area of the basics of social sciences at czech grammar schools. The results of my work, which have shown an inadequate preparedness of the grammar school graduates for the university entrance exams, should persuade the reader about the importance of the Czech educational system reform, which is in progress right now.
