Psaní jako léčba: srovnání románů Dorothy Allisonové a Tary Westoverové
Šindlerová, Zuzana ; Ulmanová, Hana (advisor) ; Veselá, Pavla (referee)
In my thesis I compare two American literary works, the canonical work of Dorothy Allison, Bastard Out of Carolina, and a more recent memoir by Tara Westover, Educated. Even though the two works do not share geographical, religious, or socio-political settings, their similarities are undeniable. Both works represent a story of problematic family background, with episodes full of physical, psychological, and in the case of Bastard Out of Carolina, even sexual abuse. The universality of poverty, terrible social position in the main society and the detrimental effects of patriarchy provide a connecting matrix of similarities between the two literary works. My thesis is divided into two main parts, a theoretical introduction, and an analytical part, analyzing the literary works. The introductory part concentrates on three main topics that are essential to understanding the profoundly American context of both works. The common topic of the 'American poor' social class is contextualized mainly within the Southern context of the canonical work. The term 'white trash," is explained, chiefly supported by the highly acclaimed academic works of Matt Wray, Annalee Newitz and Nancy Isenberg. For a better understanding of the historical term, I provide a historical excursion of the derogatory term, utilizing the...

Southern Belle: Grotesque Distortion of Its Archetype in Sharp Objects
Šindlerová, Zuzana ; Ulmanová, Hana (advisor) ; Veselá, Pavla (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to analyze the grotesque distortion of the Southern Belle and Southern Lady archetype in the contemporary novel Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn. The novel draws from the literary tradition of Southern grotesque and introduces strong female characters that are judged from the perspective of feminist literary criticism and feminist theory. Furthermore, the novel works within the context of Southern Bell mythology, which functions as a very essential archetype to the culture and mental framework of the American South. Because the setting of the novel is placed within a very specific historical context of the American South region, some historical and sociological traditions, such as patriarchy and plantation system, are explained. Introductory chapter establishes the historical and literary context for the thesis analysis. Southern mentality and its distinctiveness from other American regions, especially from the North, are introduced. Southern social and economic structure is explained through the definition of patriarchy and plantation economy system. The mythology of Southern Belle, Southern Lady and Southern Gentleman is formulated, and this is set within the context of Southern literary tradition. The second chapter sets the novel within the context of feminist literary criticism...

Monetary policy of the ECB from the external and internal balance point of view
Šindlerová, Zuzana ; Durčáková, Jaroslava (advisor) ; Čermáková, Daniela (referee)
The European Central Bank implements its monetary policy within the Euro Area -- the biggest project of monetary union in the history. This fact itself draws our attention and gives rise to the questions about the efficiency of the adopted steps in the scope of fulfilling the main objective -- price stability. However when evaluating the overall economic balance we are not only interested in price stability. This paper is focused on ECB monetary policy from a theoretical point of view as well as through comprehensive analysis of its practical effects on economic performance. External and internal balance indicators help us to evaluate the ECB's achievement from 1999 till now. Therefore we can see the origins of the current miserable state of the common currency not in the bad decisions undertaken by the ECB, but in the general conditions, which enabled the formation of the EMU on a very unstable foundation.

Šindlerová, Zuzana ; Urbánek, Václav (advisor) ; Urbánek, Václav (referee)
The impact evaluation of European regional policy's existence and performing has been often discussed but still unsolved task. The budget of European Union provides member countries with financial support to their projects which have sometimes very doubtful effect. This paper concerns about the system of grants drawing from the European structural funds within the frame of Common regional operational program. This program along with the other ones contributed to fulfillment of the regional policy's aims in the period 2004 -- 2006. The project that has been carried out within the Common regional operational program in Šternberk is analyzed on the background of development and characteristic of EU's regional (structural) policy. This analysis is focused on the criteria which are taken into account when the town applies for the grant and also on the indicators needed for an ex-post control. Finally the paper brings to light some impacts of the realized project on the life in the town and also proposes the indicators that should be followed up from now on to generate an exhaustive evaluation.
