Lexical characteristics of the French language used in the French West Indies: based on a literary corpus

This thesis, as the title mentions, is devoted to lexieal partieularities of West lndies Freneh. West lndies Freneh is defined as the language varieties used in the Lesser Antilles, more preeisely in the Freneh overseas departments and territories Martinique and Guadeloupe and on the lslands of St. Bartholomew and St. Martin. The Freneh language evolved in this previously Creolophone area and developed its own internal norms. Therefore, it differs from metropolitan Freneh in its rhetorieal, syntaetie, phonetie and lexieal aspeet. The theoretieal part deseribes the eurrent linguistie situation of the Antilles and explains basie terms that linguists use for its analysis. As mentioned before, the language spoken by the majority of the inhabitants until reeently was Creole; therefore Creole languages in general are eonsidered here first (their origin, eommon traits, subdivisions). The following ehapter analyse s the literature and the train of thought of West lndies Freneh whieh influeneed their use of language. A brief overview of lexieal enriehment possibilities follows.
