KAREL HUGO HILAR (1885-1935). Among the theatre, politics and intrigue
ZELENKOVÁ, Magdalena
The thesis introduces a little-known personality at the turn of the 19th and 20th century ? theatre director, critic and theorist Karel Hugo Hilar. On the grounds of the archival resources, which have not been entirely used to date, the work reconstructs Hilar´s professional and personal life to bring a completely new and more comprehensive view of Hilar´s figure. This thesis is divided into three parts. The first section deals with Hilar´s maturing in the context of the time and maps the most significant moments that influenced his life. The second part is composed of his professional career, mainly his impact on two most important Prague theatre scenes. This passage highlights his successes and failures to effort a modern conception of the theatre. The last chapter presents the commemorative events organized after Hilar´s death and it portrays Hilar´s image created on the basis of narratives coming out after his decease in many memoirs of his fellow people.
