Administrative burden of nurses

Abstract Current status: The issue of a nursing documentation is nowadays a very much discussed topic, especially its bureaucratic burden. A nursing documentation is an everyday part of a working process of a nurse as it has a great effect on a quality of care. Therefore, it is very important, that the documentation is not only easy to work with, but also very effective, understandable and beneficial. All of that could be reached easier by transferring the nursing documentation into its electronic form, which is more and more common thanks to the modernization of all kinds of industries in general. The aim of this Thesis was mainly to find out and to document the opinion of a current nursing documentation held by nurses themselves, but also to learn how much time during their shift nurses have to spend filling up the paper documentation compare to the electronic form. Lastly, to evaluate advantages and disadvantages of the electronic form of nursing documentation. Methodology: For the research realization we used a combination of a quality and quantity research. A quality part had been done by semi-structured interviews whereas the quantity part had been done by surveys. Sample data consisted of nurses, who work with a nursing documentation on daily basis. Specifically, we involved 112 respondents who had been chosen by a specific selection and the size of a file had been set by the theory of data amount used in theory. Subsequently, we chose 8 nurses, who we hold a meeting with for the semi-structured interview. Result: In conclusion, we are confident to say, that majority of nurses is moreover satisfied with the nursing documentation as it is at the moment, therefore the paper form of documentation. However, the unhurried electronification of the nursing documentation is welcomed by many more nurses than we expected it to be. Majority of nurses find any kind of nursing documentation as a very important part of their job and also of a high quality of nursing care in general. Closure and a recommendation for practice usage: Our research opens up space for deeper analysis, which could be based on a comparison of the paper and the electronic form of a nursing documentation. As mentioned above, all kinds of industries are being transferred to an electronic form, especially data storage and its future archiving, therefore healthcare should be one of them too. It would be interesting to find out whether the electronic form of documentation, which is already used in some healthcare institutions, has anyhow been beneficial for the quality of care provided.
