Electrodiffusion Diagnostics of Apparent Wall Slip in Polymer Solutions
Wein, Ondřej ; Tovčigrečko, Valentin ; Večeř, M. ; Sobolík, Václav
Two substantially improved experimental methods, the apparent wall slip (AWS) rotational viscometry with a Morse-taper sensor and electrodiffusion (ED) flow diagnostics with autocalibrated friction probes, are used to study near-to-wall velocity profiles in aqueous solutions of high-molecular polysaccharides under viscometric flow conditions. By comparing the velocity data from the both methods, estimates of the depleted layer thickness in dependence on wall shear stress are obtained. The ED data support the two-layer model of AWS effect, with the constant enhanced fluidity across the depleted layer.

Direction-specific (multi-segment) electrodiffusion (ED) probes were tested and calibrated under dynamic conditions (time-dependent flow, potentiostatic transient). Software package EDIKWORK has been developed within framework of the NI LabVIEW programming system, for an automated control of the ED experiment and and data acquisition (in four working regimes STA, TRA, OSC, VAM). High automated programs under MS EXCEL were prepared for the downstream treatment of excessive series of primary data and calibration of ED probes.

A PC-driven multi-channel ED interface EDIK has been designed and tested in a project of dynamical calibration of multi-segment ED probes. Due to a specific approach to the calibration, this PC-driven device ensures accuracy about 0.1 mV in the supplied polarization voltage and about 0.1% from the range selected, with ranges 10-1?A : 10+4?A. A user-friendly software EDIKWork has been developed for the ED process control, data sampling and analysis within the environment of the NI LabVIEW. A hydraulic unit for generating parallel-superposed oscillatory viscometric flow (based on a commercial servomotor solution by YASKAWA) has been designed and used for dynamical calibration of 2-segment (sandwich type) and 3-segment (direction-specific) ED probes.

Theory for a disk probe is compared with existing numerical solutions and confirmed by electrochemical experiment under limiting diffusion conditions, using potentiostatic transient. The theory is relevant also for heat transfer probes, where the edge effects are even stronger than in analogous mass transfer experiments, as the thermal diffusion coefficient is much higher.

Anomalous near-wall flow kinematics of aqueous solutions og high-molecular polysaccharide solutionns containing electrolytes has been studied using two indipendent experimental techniques: electrolytical mass-transfer measurements under conditions of limiting diffusion conditions and viscometry with varied gap thickness for detecting the apparent wall slip.
