Quality of Life in Old Age

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to obtain information about quality of life of gardening senior citizens, their subjective perception and evaluation of quality of their life, focusing on the social, cultural and health context. The bachelor thesis is divided into a theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part deals with an issue of old age, describes a person´s adaptibility in old age and seniors´ leisure time, characterises active and healthy ageing as well as values of life. The practical part of the bachelor thesis defines targets, research questions, operationalisation of concepts and methods of data collecting in a qualitative research. The research was implemented with those senior citizens who live in their natural environment and whose main leisure time activity is gardening. Methods of interviewing and structures interview were implemented. The research is focused on a consistent description of all the respondents. As emerged from the research, gardening as a leisure time activity influences the quality of life positively. It prevents from social isolation, creates and confirms friendly relationship and removes intergenerational differences. It helps the senior citizens to maintain their life contentment. Gardening enriches seniors´ lives. The information obtained form the bachelor thesis can be used for closer awareness of individualised approaches and methods for evaluation the person´s quality of life, of differences of areas forming quality of life, expecting changes in life or balancing of the life generally. The results of the research can be provided to institutions that gather seniors, cultural institutions, homes for seniors or the nursing care homes.
