The issue of translating subtitles on the material of the television series To Catch the Kaidash (Спіймати Кайдаша)

The master thesis The Issue of Translating Subtitles on the Material of the Television Series To Catch the Kaidash (Спіймати Кайдаша) deals with the analysis and determining the strategy of translation of the TV series To Catch the Kaidash into Czech. The series is specific in that it is a modern adaptation of the classic work of Ukrainian literature, The Kaidash Family (Кайдашева сім'я, written in 1878) by Ivan Nechui-Levyts'kyi: events from the late 19th century are transposed to the years 2004-2014. The series retains and extends the issues of the original work, and the language is rich in elements of surzhyk, dialect, archaic lexis, local realia, literary quotations, and allusions. The first part of the thesis deals with the reception and the question of the success of the series in Ukraine. The second part focuses on determining the translation strategy for the material of selected excerpts from the series. The aim of the thesis is to examine the issues of translation of the given series and to determine the most appropriate strategy. The issues of translation of realia and language phenomena of Oleksiy Chupa's novel Fairy tales from my bomb shelter

The thesis The Issues of Translation of Realia and Language Phenomena of Oleksiy Chupa's Novel "Fairy tales from my bomb shelter" focuses on the analysis of translation problems and realia of Donbass in the novel by contemporary Ukrainian writer Oleksiy Chupa. This work is specific in its mapping the mental image of contemporary Donbas and its large amount of realia, slang, colloquial expressions, and surzhyk. The first part of the thesis is devoted to an overview of the development of the image of Donbas in Ukrainian literature, in particular, on the example of several contemporary authors; the second part focuses on the selection of translation theories, theoretical and practical methods for the translation of linguistic phenomena occurring in the work under study. Practical examples from the text of the work with possible translation solutions are also presented. The aim of the thesis is to determine the functionality of theoretical translation procedures in the translation of a particular literary work. Ukrainian Workers'University in Prague

This thesis focuses on Ukrainian emigration in Czechoslovakia, especially the personality of Mykyta Shapoval and the history of the last two institutions he founded. The aim of the thesis is to better evaluate the importance of the Ukrainian Workers' University in the context of Mykyta Shapoval's activities. The first chapter focuses on Shapoval's personality, his activities during the Ukrainian War of Independence and the years of exile. The second chapter outlines the existence of Ukrainian emigration in interwar Czechoslovakia and pays a special attention to the Ukrainian Public Committee. The last chapter presents a description of the two institutions that Shapoval founded, the Ukrainian Institute of Sociology and the Ukrainian Workers' University, their history, programs, and activities. Archival editions of historical newspapers and magazines were used as the thesis' research material. The aim of the thesis has only been partially fulfilled; for a deeper understanding of the issue, it would be necessary to study the personal archive of Mykyta Shapoval, located in Kyiv. Surzhyk in Contemporary Ukrainian Literature and the Difficulties with its Translation

This thesis is focused on the research of the functions of surzhyk in contemporary Ukrainian literature and is a continuation of the dissertation Literary surzhyk: contours of literary multilingualism written by Alexej Sevruk. The extension lies in a more detailed focus on the analysis of chosen novels and on the determining the functions of surzhyk in those novels. The theoretical part of the thesis will focus on the definition of surzhyk, its genesis and use in literature. Particular attention will be paid to how the use and conception of surzhyk has changed in recent years. The goal of this thesis is to define the function of surzhyk in the selected novels written by the contemporary Ukrainian writers, such as Artem Chapay, Lyubko Deresh, Lyuba Klymenko, Artem Czech, Oleksiy Chupa along with others. The chosen writers represent different generations and come from different parts of Ukraine, which will allow us to analyze surzhyk in different types of texts and thus expand the typology of its use. The main aim of this thesis is to analyze novel fragments in which surzhyk occurs and to suggest our own translation of selected fragments. Ukrainian-Czech Interferences (syntax)

This thesis deals with Ukrainian-Czech interference at the syntactical level. The theoretical section deals with the terms we work with, defines both contrastive and error analyses, and focuses on syntactic differences between Ukrainian and Czech. The central part of this section focuses on different valencies for Czech and Ukrainian verbs. The practical section consist of an experiment in which we observe the error rate of Ukrainian students when using Czech verbs that have a different valency in Ukrainian. It also includes the differential valency dictionary of Czech and Ukrainian verbs, which is the result of this thesis. The category of singulative in the Ukrainian language

In this thesis we focus on singulatives, which, according to S. Bevzenko, are most common in the Ukrainian language. In the study, we analyzed many meanings of the term singulative from different linguists and chose version of V. Musatov, which, in our opinion, is the most accurate. The theoretical part is dedicated to general information about singulatives, their presence and meaning in Slavic languages as well as classifications, by which researchers divide these nouns. The general stylistic characteristic of singulatives in Russian, where these nouns are investigated in more detail, is also presented in this part. In the practical part with the use of Hrinchenko's "Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language" (1907 - 1909), "Dictionary of the Ukrainian language" in eleven volumes (1970 - 1980) and the academic "Great explanatory dictionary of Modern Ukrainian language" (2009) we research singulatives in the Ukrainian language, including changing or preserving their lexical meanings and stylistic markings during 1909 - 2009, as well as their use in fiction and folklore. The issues of translation of Taras Antypovych's novel Chronos

This thesis Issues of translation of the novel Chronos of Taras Antypovych focuses on the indication and analysis of various difficult lexical phenomena in the science-fiction novel of contemporary Ukrainian writer Taras Antypovych. Among the specific features of his novel we could name such as almost complete absence of facts, plenty of neologisms, a lot of self-described names, and frequent mixing of different functional styles. The first part of work deals with the characteristic and detailed analysis of the novel Chronos, the second part is both theoretical and practical one that could be considered as the central part of the work. Such phenomena as neologisms, slang and argot, language games, vulgarisms, own names, "surzhik", phraseological units, interjections, and the words derived from them are considered here as one that may appear problematic in the translation from Ukrainian into Czech. The theoretical explanation is accompanied by examples from the text of the novel which I translated into Czech and supported with comments. The main aim of the work was to clarify the translation process and to present one or more solutions to the problems indicated above.
