Comenius' Consolatory Writings

The submitted work deals with Comenius' consolatory writings. The writings included in the third volume of The Works of Jan Amos Komenský served, in particular, for acquaintance with the consolatory writings. The work examines the subject matter in four parts. At first it explains the historical and personal basis of Comenius' consolatory writings. It shows the brethren priest as a faithful shepherd of the church who in his writings consoles and encourages his sorrowful companions during an exceptionally tempestuous period. It also offers a general overview of Comenius' consolatory literature and a basic description of the individual works, including complementary information. In a special part it focusses on consolatory works as a separate literary genre, their historical development and linkage of Comenius' consolatory works, with emphasis on their theological foundation and practical aim. In the work there is also a literary and theological analysis of a selected consolatory work called Letters to Heaven, in which the author deals with the age-old question of theodicy from the aspect of Christian faith against the background of property inequality.
