Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) in patients with chronical illnesses. Possible relation to gender.
SEVERINOVÁ, Eva
Abstract The aim of the theoretical part of this bachelor thesis is to describe a basic sample of frequent chronic diseases appearing among general public. Individual chapters discuss vertebrogenic algic syndrome, impingement syndrome, carpal tunnel syndrome, osteoarthritis, ischemic heart disease and chronic bronchitis. The thesis deals with the characteristic issues related to these diseases as well as with the currently available types of therapy. As some results of recent pilot studies reveal that patients suffering from chronic diseases have a markedly worse quality of life than general population and that women?s quality of live is at a disadvantage compared to that of men, there is an objective need to conform or disprove this fact. The author of this thesis believes that it is of great social importance to contribute to the determination of the necessity to take possible physical and social measures in favor of women. The objective of the research part of this bachelor thesis was to collect data needed for the reliable and objective mapping of the issue in concern and to identify whether the quality of life of chronic patients, including those in remission, is lower that that of general public and whether this same phenomenon is clearly obvious among women when compared to men. In view of the nature of the issue under scrutiny the author chose quantitative research based on the use of questionnaires. The structured SF-36 survey was processed by respondents alone who had been briefly introduced to the issue. Research involved 63 hospitalized patients who were older than 15, suffered from chronic conditions, and were clients of the Hamza Sanatorium for Children and Adults in Luže-Košumberk and of the Internal Medicine Ward of the hospital in Chrudim. In practice this bachelor thesis can be used as a source material for assessing the quality of life and for taking care of chronic patients in the Hamza Sanatorium for Children and Adults in Luže-Košumberk. It can also be used to determine the possible ways of preventing the aggravation of problems. It may also serve as an educational material addressed to the professional and lay public, students of secondary and postsecondary schools of medicine.
